A former Georgia high school football player died Saturday after jumping from a rock into a creek at High Falls Park in DeKalb County, Ala.

Mason Tompkins, 18, was a 2017 graduate of Harrison High School in Kennesaw, Ga., where he played varsity football. He had planned to major in political science and play football for Berry College.

The teen jumped off a high rock at the park into the creek and didn't resurface, according to DeKalb County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Michael Edmonson.

Witnesses have told local media that they saw him jump from the top of the waterfall and hit his head on a rock on the way down.

Local rescue agencies helped deputies search for the teen; his body was recovered two hours later, near where he jumped into the creek.

His official cause of death is still under investigation, according to officials.

In 2014, a 16-year-old Marshall County boy, also a high school football player, died after slipping and falling off a ledge at High Falls.

At the time, DeKalb County Sherriff Jimmy Harris told WHNT News 19, "It's just a tragic thing that we're used to down here, we have injuries, people fall off two or three times a year or more."

Mason Tompkins is the son of Renee and Wade Tompkins.

According to the Berry College Football website, Tompkins anchored the offensive line at Harrison High, advancing the team to state playoffs. He was chosen as Player of the Week for his efforts.

Harrison's quarterback, Justin Fields, considered one of the top recruits in the nation, posted a photo of Tompkins on Twitter, saying, "Today we lost not only a great friend but a brother. He had my back on and off of the field. Have a blast in heaven, we love you."

Other friends and family were also posting remembrances on social media of Tompkins.
