Top 25 Alabama high school running backs in the last 25 years

25. Troy Dixon, UMS-Wright

Dixon finished his prep career as UMS’ all-time leading rusher. As a senior, he rushed for 1,989 yards to finish with nearly 7,000 yards for his career. He is one of seven players in AHSAA history to score more than 100 touchdowns in his career. He finished with 116. He was the Class 4A Back of the Year in 2014.

24. Michael Owens, Deshler

The Class 4A Back of the Year in 1998, Owens rushed for 2,091 yards and 29 TDs on 190 carries as a senior. As a junior, he ran for more than 1,800 yards and had more than 2,500 all-purpose yards. He ran for 174 yards and four TDs against T.R. Miller to lead the team to a state title.

23. Justin Albert, Prattville

Albert helped his team to back-to-back state titles in 2006 and 2007. The Lions were 61-2 overall during his career. He rushed for 1,655 yards and 34 touchdowns as a junior and 1,400 yards and 28 TDs as a senior. He finished his career with 62 touchdowns and 3,055 yards rushing. He also had 1,563 yards and 21 TDS receiving and returned a punt and five kickoffs for scores.

22. Dawud Rasheed, Shades Valley

The state’s Mr. Football in 1994, Rasheed ran for 1,807 yards and scored 27 touchdowns on 261 carries as a senior. He led Shades Valley to 14 consecutive wins and a spot in the Class 6A title game against Anniston. He was selected to the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game, the ASWA Super 12 team and was the Class 6A Player of the Year.

21. Jalston Fowler, Vigor

Fowler combined with Kendall Houston to lead the Wolves to a state championship. He was a brutal blocker and also split carries with Houston. He rushed for 1,182 yards and 25 TDs in 2008 and also caught 27 passes for 391 yards and a score. He was ranked as the No. 2 fullback in the nation coming out of high school.

20. Terrance Hollingsworth, Berry

Hollingsworth was a four-year varsity letterman who finished his prep career as the state’s all-time career leader in total offense (11,788 yards), all-purpose yards (13,490) and rushing TDs (113). He still ranks first in total offense and all-purpose yards and is now second in rushing touchdowns. Hollingsworth ran for 9,819 career yards, good for second on the AHSAA list behind Mac Campbell. As a senior, he rushed for 2,125 yards and recorded 3,196 all-purpose yards.

19. Ostin McPherson, St. Paul’s

McPherson was a five-year starter for St. Paul’s, rushing for 9,021 yards and leading the team to a pair of Class 5A state titles. He was the MVP in both of the title games. As a senior, he ran for 2,088 yards on 281 carries and was named the AL.com Coastal Alabama Offensive MVP. As a junior, he ran for 2,177 yards on 305 carries. He added 1,773 yards as a sophomore, 1001 yards as a freshman and 1,027 yards in the eighth grade. He ran for 205 yards and three touchdowns in his first varsity start as an eighth-grader.

18. Ameer Abdullah, Homewood

The former Nebraska and current NFL standout played in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game as a senior in 2010 and scored the winning TD. As a senior for the Patriots, he rushed for 1,800 yards, had 515 yards receiving and returned four punts for touchdowns.

17. Donnie Gosa, Hackleburg

Gosa was the state's all-time leader in career touchdowns (122) and points scored (723) when he graduated in 1995. His totals have held up well, with his points mark checking in a second and the TD tally at fourth. Gosa ran for 7,348 career yards, second-best upon graduation, and currently eighth all-time. He was named the 1995 Class 1A Player of the Year.

16. Zac Stacy, Bibb County

Stacy was an under-the-radar type player at Bibb County High. As a junior, he rushed for 1,668 yards and 26 touchdowns and caught 27 passes for 228 yards while playing quarterback, running back and wide receiver. As a senior, he rushed for 2,407 yards and 36 touchdowns. He scored seven touchdowns against Jemison and was a finalist for Mr. Football. He finished his high school career with 5,863 rushing yards and 76 touchdowns.

15. Tim Simon, Cordova

Simon, the Class 3A Back of the Year in 2008, finished his high school career with 8,536 rushing yards – good for No. 5 All-time. His high for a single season was 2,969 yards in 2008. He also scored 258 points in 15 games that season. Simon scored 36 TDs each in 2007 and 2008 and finished with 130 in his career. He also played defense and had 130 tackles as a senior.

14. Terrance Wilkes, Wadley

Wilkes, who played from 2003-2006, holds the AHSAA record for most total touchdowns with 160 – that’s seven better than second-place Mac Campbell of Alexandria. No one else is within 25. He finished his high school career with 9,668 rushing yards – good for third on the all-time list. He was a three-time first-team all-state selection and the Class 1A Back of the Year in 2006 when he rushed for 2,022 yards and 36 TDs. Tragically, Wilkes was shot and killed shortly after his senior football season.

13. Cory Whisenant, Springville

As a senior in 1999, Whisenant rushed for 2,997 yards and 38 touchdowns and was named Mr. Football. He averaged 11.7 yards per carry that year and scored on two runs of 99 yards and one of 95. He was a two-time Class 3A first-team All-State selection.

12. Brandon Johnson, Alma Bryant

The future Auburn standout led Rush Propst’s Alma Bryant team to a 12-1 record in 1998. The physical and aggressive fullback rushed for 1,320 yards and 17 touchdowns on 185 carries despite missing two games due to injury. Behind Johnson, the Hurricanes won their first 12 games before losing to Vigor 21-14 in the state quarterfinals.

11. La’Damian WebbBeauregard

Webb is the only active Mr. Football winner on the list. He won in 2016 after leading Beauregard to its first Class 5A state title. As a junior, he rushed for 3,242 rushing yards and an AHSAA-record 49 rushing touchdowns on 354 carries. His 53 overall TDs also set a state record. In the Class 5A championship-game victory over Wenonah, he ran 51 times for 359 yard and five TDs, setting Super 7 records for rushing yards, rushing attempts and rushing TDs.

10. Tyrone Prothro, Cleburne County

Known as a wide receiver before a brutal injury ended his college playing career at Alabama, Prothro was an excellent running back in high school. He ran for 1,902 yards on 255 carries and scored 28 touchdowns as a senior. He returned an amazing 18 kicks for TDs during his career. He finished high school with 8,099 all-purpose yards and 92 touchdowns. He rushed for 1,031 yards as a junior. He was a first-team Class 4A All-State selection as an athlete in 2001 and as a running back in 2002.

9. Kendal Gibson, Aliceville

The Class 3A Back of the Year in 2000, Gibson set a then-single season record with 3,083 yards and 43 touchdowns as a senior. He ran for 2,020 yards in 14 games as a junior and 1,791 as a sophomore. He is sixth on the AHSAA all-time rushing list with 7,908 total yards. He was a two-time, first-team All-State player according to the Alabama Sports Writers Association.

8. Racean “Roc” Thomas, Oxford

Thomas was a three-time first-team All-State running back and the state’s Mr. Football in 2013. As a senior, he rushed for 2,211 yards and 32 touchdowns on the way to becoming a Parade and Under Armour All-American. He signed with Auburn and later transferred to Jacksonville State.

7. Jamarius Henderson, Dale County

Henderson rushed for 9,700 yards in his high school career. As a senior, he rushed for a state record 3,483 yards and scored 48 touchdowns. In five postseason games that year, he ran for 1,465 yards and 15 scores. As a junior, he rushed for 2,294 yards. He was the Class 3A Back of the Year in 2013 and the Lineman of the Year in 2014. He also made the ASWA Super 12 list as a senior.

6. Thomas Banks, West Jefferson

In 1993, Banks rushed for 2,797 yards and 38 touchdowns on 299 attempts. He finished his career with 7,634 yards, a state record at the time. He scored 83 touchdowns in three years and led West Jefferson to the state title game as a senior. He was voted the state’s Mr. Football in 1993.

5. Antoneyo Williams, Central-Tuscaloosa

Williams rushed for 1,650 yards and scored 31 touchdowns for the Falcons in 1996. He finished his three-year career with more than 4,500 yards rushing and 69 TDs. He averaged 30 carries and 200 yards a game during his senior year and was named Mr. Football. Central was a combined 25-2 in his last two seasons.

4. Kerryon Johnson, Madison Academy

Johnson led the Mustangs to three straight state championships. He rushed for 1,659 yards and 25 TDs as a senior and set at Super 7 record with six touchdowns in the championship game. He finished his prep career with 5,274 yards rushing and 109 total touchdowns. The three-time first-team all-state selection was named Mr. Football by the ASWA in 2014. He was also a Gatorade and Under Armour All-American.

3. Mac Campbell, Alexandria

The 1997 Mr. Football winner is still the AHSAA record holder for yards in a career with 9,839. His career spanned from 1993 to 1997. His best season was his last when he rushed for 2,596 yards for the Valley Cubs. He ran for 2,000 yards or more in three straight seasons. He scored 36 touchdowns as a senior, 37 as a junior and 35 as a sophomore. His 1,157 career carries are a state record and his 153 TDs is second only behind Wadley’s Terrance Wilkes. He was the Class 4A Player of the Year in three straight seasons.

2. T.J. Yeldon, Daphne

Yeldon capped a superb career by rushing for 2,193 yards and 31 touchdowns on 232 carries as a senior, an average of 9.5 yards per carry. He also caught 19 passes for 506 yards and a TD. He was named the state’s Mr. Football that season. As a junior, Yeldon ran for 1,112 yards and 18 TDs and caught 34 passes for 504 yards and five TDs as the Trojans won the Class 6A state title. He finished his high school career with 4,653 total yards and 65 rushing touchdowns. He had 6,155 yards from scrimmage and 73 total TDs. The future Alabama and NFL standout was a U.S. Army All-American, played in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game and was the 2011 Class 6A Back of the Year.

1. Carnell “Cadillac” Williams, Etowah

Mr. Football 2000, Williams rushed for 2,620 yards and 38 touchdowns in helping Etowah to an undefeated season and a state title as a senior. As a junior, he ran for 1,729 yards and 23 touchdowns. He finished his Blue Devil career with a total of 6,543 yards and 92 touchdowns. Williams was a three-time first-team Class 5A all-state selection and a two-time Back of the Year. The future Auburn star was a Parade All-American as a senior.
