With the Auburn football 2017 season opener a mere 16 days away, Coach Gus Malzahn posted possibly his most significant tweet since 2013 on Monday, announcing Baylor transfer QB Jarrett Stidham as the clearcut starter. The announcement surprised no one, but is good for this Auburn team in that it allows three good weeks of work with one quarterback and his offensive starters.

Coach John Ray and Doug Dean discuss what Stidham will bring to the table, which very well may include the reclaiming of the level of coaching confidence Malzahn displayed in 2010, and as head coach in 2013.

"Quarterback recruiting at its very core has been the genesis of any problem that Auburn has faced during Malzahn's tenure. His confidence and coinciding effectiveness are completely tied to his faith in his quarterback. When he has one with an effective skillset, especially a dual-threat skillset, he operates with calculative tactics that can be downright destructive to any defensive scheme and with the tempo that physically breaks down even the best schemes. When he doesn't have a quarterback he seems to overthink plays with attempts to create a utopian personnel grouping to precisely execute each play, slowing tempo, allowing defenses to match personnel and then unintentionally forfeiting his best advantages."

I heard this quote as well and was like "well that about sums it up". The Utopian personnel grouping thought is on point IMO

Wow.. I never thought anyone would be able to explain the Clemson game last year and suddenly someone does.  This hits the nail on the head.  The Clemson game was an endless attempt to create his utopian personnel grouping.

It's like Gus is constantly looking for a bunch of highly trained specialists who execute his complex master plan perfectly. The funny thing is, we were most successful last year when a couple of blue collar, lunch pail carrying ballers were leading the charge... Kam, who just ground it out no matter what was called and Sean who has no flash in his game, but combines accuracy with heart to get the job done.

The "he seems to overthink plays with attempts to create a utopian personnel grouping" part caught my attention. In the corporate world, it's called paralysis by analysis. College football is dynamic, not static. Injuries, depth, inexperience, weather, etc can and often do disrupt even the best of plans. This has limited him some, but I believe Gus has improved in this area. He seems to be more trusting of this coaching staff.  If he can continue to grow in that area he will do great things at AU.
