50 dead. At least 400 hospitalized. That 50 number is likely going to rise.

LAS VEGAS — A gunman at a Las Vegas hotel rained a rapid-fire barrage on a huge outdoor concert festival on Sunday night, sending thousands of people fleeing. At least 50 victims died, and hundreds of others were wounded, officials said, making it one of the deadliest mass shootings in United States history.

“We believe the individual killed himself,” said Sheriff Joseph Lombardo of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department on CNN.

Online video of the attack outside the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino showed the singer Jason Aldean performing outside at the Route 91 Harvest Festival, a three-day country music event, interrupted by the sound of automatic gunfire. The music stopped, and concertgoers ducked for cover. “Get down,” one shouted. “Stay down,” screamed another.

That's a fully automatic weapon firing down on a concert from the 32nd floor.

Damn. He straight up rained bullets down. That’s a thug.

Only similar shooting would be the UT tower shooting. With a crowd like that, though, aiming would be an afterthought, at least initially.

And the numbers bear that out. Those casualty numbers are staggering.

The fake news is already warming up.  Reports that he was ANTIFA and another that he recently converted to Islam and was ISIS.  Love the fake news, I'm not sure we will ever find out the truth about this.

Very disturbing event.

Yeah, the aiming is an afterthought from his advantage point. Firing at area targets was just as effective as aiming at point targets

BuzzFeed is keeping a running tally.

For anyone curious, here's the angle on this mess, shooters position blue, venue red. Shooting into a fishbowl from an elevated position, we're not talking about marksmanship skills required for this one.

This is the red part/venue in the same orientation.

Layout of the suite. Mirror it vertically for proper orientation.

Looking up from the BACK/North end of the venue.

Just to clarify, the window on the left puts him ~30 degrees off angle shooting to his left at the stage area. The one on the right is square to the middle of the seating area.

Hard for me to comprehend, it really is. A reminder that time is precious.

Imagine being one of the people in that crowd. It's the stuff of nightmares.

On background, guy owned a $400k home in a retirement village ~80 miles east of Las Vegas, on the Arizona/Nevada border. Licensed pilot. Former Lockheed-Martin employee. No criminal record.

He could have legally bought and possessed FA (Full Auto) NFA (National Firearms Act) weapons, or simply  illegally converted semi-auto rifles to FA.

Guys got to be a kook.

That's just it. I can't imagine. And, I'm going to continue on with my day - get my work done, go to the Dentist... meanwhile stuff like this is going on. To quote one of my favorite movies, Michael Clayton, "People are F'ing incomprehensible."

I don't know enough about FA firearms, but I've read people talk about it sounding like it/they were modified semi-autos. I guess some people can tell by the sound of it?

You can buy "digital" triggers, bump stocks, or install high end $ triggers that can be shot at an extremely high rate of fire but are still considered semi-auto.

Personally, I can dump a 30 round AR mag in ~0.25 sec shot splits, that sounds real close to FA (7 seconds to fire 30 rounds), but isn't. I can tell the difference, but only because I shot both FA and expensive SA triggers.

That factory FA would have to be registered, don't they? We'd hear if he purchased it legally pretty quickly. I lean toward illegally modified or bump fired.

Some of the videos make me think crank operated though. Give this a listen.

Okay, yeah my friend just told me he thought it was "crank" operated, too. What does that mean?

It's a tax stamp and registered with the BATF, but I'm not sure how long it will take us to get that info from them.

I haven't heard a video yet where I could be sure because of the sound bouncing off of the buildings...

EDIT:

Yeah, that does sound like a crank, but I have fired semi's and sounded like that because of finger fatigue.
