Every time I think the NCAA can't be more corrupt than it already seems they pull a rabbit out of their hat and prove they can go a step further.

So today, hiding their announcement behind the FBI probes of basketball programs and Auburn and Oklahoma State and some other minor basketball "powers",  the NCAA announced that no action will be taken against UNC   after more than  decade of academic fraud that benefited their basketball program and help;ed them to a number of national titles. .

The decision was made on the specious grounds that the "courses" were also open to non-athletes who benefited so it was not a sports issue,  but instead, an academic management issue or something to that effect.    I guess that means if Chuck had scattered a few C-notes among random students walking along College Street in addition to a couple basketball players, he could have called it charity or scholarship assistance that was not limited to athletics.....essentially the same defense as UNC .......and all would be right with the world.

This one just about takes the cake. NCAA just might as well shut down and let schools just go ahead and align with professional sports teams and become paid feeder systems.

It's unfortunate that is so many fields how influential the factor of money is. Sometimes I hate the capitalist mindset that is so perverse in this country. Money takes precedent over anything...football players' health, fairness in competition, the list goes on. Often times I wonder how much better so many things would be if the #1 priority wasn't how to make another buck.

A years-long probe into widespread academic fraud in North Carolina’s athletic program, including its storied basketball powerhouse, reached an unexpected end on Friday when the NCAA announced it would not issue major sanctions against the school.

The prolonged investigation focused on a major at the university, African and Afro-American Studies, where about 1,500 athletes over 18 years took advantage to make good grades with little to no work involved. The university’s defense did not focus on the legitimacy of the courses—the NCAA said “generally, the facts of this case are not in dispute.”

UNC instead argued that any problem was university wide, not limited to the athletic department, because the courses were available to all students. On Friday, the NCAA accepted the university’s explanation. .

“A Division I Committee on Infractions hearing panel could not conclude that the University of North Carolina violated NCAA academic rules when it made available deficient Department of African and Afro-American Studies ‘paper courses’ to the general student body, including student-athletes,” the NCAA said Friday.

Greg Sankey, the head of the Southeastern Conference who was the chief hearing officer on the panel, said athletes “likely benefited from the so-called ‘paper courses’” but that “the information available in the record did not establish that the courses were solely created, offered and maintained as an orchestrated effort to benefit student-athletes.”

While the class was offered to all students we all know that student athletes get priority scheduling before the rest of the student body.......

What place are you thinking of? ....perhaps those benevolent people's republics and socialist meccas like East Germany and Russia which back in the day (and not that long ago) doped up their athletes and cheated every way possible in international athletics....and for what reason if not to make a Ruble or a Deutsche Mark?

But ..every now and then even my favorite sports hack gets it mostly right and Phillip Marshall on AUC has a pretty good piece that AU people should consider......and I say that after reading hints that the academic allegations were based on insider efforts ...and for what purpose?    make some point about a university employee?

I read that of the 19 students enrolled in the non-existent class that gave out free grades, 18 were NC football players and 1 was a former NC football player.  The professor is being charged with taking money ($12,000) and not producing a service.

It went on for more than 15 years.....NCAA was looking for a reason to do nothing and the FBI investigation gave them the perfect smoke screen.   So whatever sports media hacks that aren't covering the NFL protests are commenting on the FBI investigation .....and thus, UNC will be old news by Monday.

I think the Clemson loss already made it old news, smh.

North Carolina also didn't roll over and play dead with the NCAA.  If this had been a case of athletes receiving additional benefits, they would have by rule nailed UNC.  It never was about that.  People everywhere said the same thing when Cam was allowed to play in 2010.

The UNC issue was sanctioned and covered up the UNC administration all the way to the top.  People who blew he whistle were fired, etc. This was nothing like Cam.

That is the cause. The result was we had several athletes getting gimmes. I think the only savior was there was a higher number of non athletes also skating.

You mention this in reference to UNC where hundreds, maybe thousands of athletes over nearly 20 years were getting grades for not attending class....professors drawing salaries and never attending a class,  GAs doing the work and mentors writing the papers....and it was worse than that.     Ended up with a Chancellor getting fired and several layers of staff dismissed and I think one Department Head in jail for misuse of government funds.

AU has it's problems but please don't try to make it sound comparable to what went on at UNC.   My son and son in law both went there and know the stories first hand.

The thing is....it really wasn't an NCAA problem....should have been a state problems, state legislature and Governor.....but you think bama has the state politics under their thumb, you have no idea what influence UNCH has in this state.

It was a very similar  problem in different proportions.

Not even close to being similar...proportion or any other way.  Like comparing a teaspoon to the ocean.....but guess you prefer to think the worst....that's fine.

A teaspoon of salt water is exactly the same as an ocean. THE DIFFERENCE IS PROPORTIONAL. I don't think the worst at all.

Ofcourse it wasn't.  However, the NCAA had to couch their argument in a way that claimed the classes in African American studies were impermissible benefits.  When UNC was able to show that non athletes took the courses in large numbers, the NCAA was unable to make their argument stick.

Unfortunately my son was one of those non-athletes....but he did claim that the non-athletes had to attend class and do the work whereas the athletes never showed up ...even for tests.   Of course that might have been his justification for using my tuition money on what he thought was a gift A. . :)
