Paul Finebaum believes Auburn may be nation's best team: 'They would have beaten Alabama Saturday'

Auburn was nothing short of dominant Saturday against top-ranked Georiga. The Tigers won the game by a wide 40-17 margin, but when you consider the Bulldogs scored on their opening possession and once again in junk time, it puts into perspective the beating Auburn gave the Playoff Committee’s No. 1 team.

Having a full day to marinate on Auburn’s performance, SEC Network host Paul Finebaum came away believing the Tigers very well could be the nation’s best team. During his weekly Monday morning appearance on WJOX 94.5 FM radio program The Opening Drive, Finebaum recalled the quiet confidence he saw from Gus Malzahn leading up to the game.

“Gus Malzahn came by our (SEC Nation) set Friday, and he was quietly confident,” Finebaum said on the air. “He can be a little introverted, but he was like, ‘Hey, we got some things up his sleeve, we know what we are doing.’ I think that translates to his team. There was an air of confidence all week long.”

Finebaum then went a step further, calling Auburn perhaps the best team in the nation — even better than Alabama.

“When they play on all cylinders, they’re one of the best teams — I don’t know, maybe the best team in the country. They would have beaten Alabama Saturday, they would have beaten any team that lined up in Jordan-Hare Stadium,” he said. “Now the question is can they play at that level two weeks from now? If they can, they are in a position to get to the Playoff.”

Finebaum isn’t alone in his belief that Auburn should be able to challenge the Tide. This time a week ago, Auburn was a 10-point underdog to Alabama but are currently only a 3-point underdog at home against the Crimson Tide. The winner of the upcoming Iron Bowl will head to Atlanta to face Georgia in the SEC Championship Game.

I just find it funny that ESPN all picked Auburn to win (Kirk changed his pick last second just to be different) on Saturday and SEC Nation (despite Paul and Tebow talking Auburn up A LOT) all picked Georgia to win.

Kirk has been high on Auburn all season. He's a pretty decent analyst despite his bias toward the Big Ten (which he can jokingly admit at least). I'm willing to bet he picks us to win the Iron Bowl this year.

7 point drop in the point spread......that is a huge change over just a few days.....guess it reflected how both teams looked on Saturday...not just Auburn

well Corso said if Auburn beats Georgia, uat and Georgia again he's picking Auburn #1 no question.

He won't be the only one. No other team will have a resume like Auburn if ever.

 After the Clemson game I was really upset with the loss. It was not the loss itself but how terrible the offense looked. A friend of mine is a Tennessee fan (I live in TN) and I was explaining to him this Auburn team is one that should at the very least make the playoffs and very possibly win it all. This team is loaded on both sides. I know he thought I was looking at our team through O&B glasses. However I feel like I am very objective. (Maybe everyone thinks they are ha)  I just know it in my gut this team can win it all. Stay healthy and focused. Pray Gus continues to have a killer instinct and they will win it all.

We're alive on the bubble, with momentum, and our head count is almost intact. The team from Saturday night will show up at the IB 100%. Most of our Iron Bowl losses are lost before the game begins. Not the case this time. Not the case at all. JHS will be insane. I just hope it's enough. 

And I can't stand Finebom or Al.com. AUfamily is about all I got. WDE.

To me what Finebaum said was the equivalent of Pat Dye calling Georgia's manhood into question several years back before the Bama game. He always has an agenda and if he can help motivate the Tide by saying Auburn would have beaten them on Saturday and may be the best team then he will happily oblige. He is no friend of Auburn. Auburn fans know we have a shot at Bama and the team sure knows it. He's not saying this for our benefit.

Bama is one of the few teams that could lose 4 LBs and one Offensive Lineman and still win, albeit ugly. If we are healthy (save Pettway), then I think we win....IF the coaches have the team prepared and play calling is dynamic and unpredictable (like the UGA game), we definitely have the players.  We must do this consistently to have a championship program. Play calling like the 2nd half of the LSU game must be a thing of the past.

i think it is odd the way some hate finebaum and yet turn around and say much harsher things about auburns coaching and team. people on this very site have wished auburn would lost the rest of its games to get rid of gus. and this was a few people and not just one lone fan or something. i do not agree with a lot of finebaums positions and i hate the loud screamers like tammy and phyllis. but he has a lot of great guests and he has shown auburn a lot of love this season. and like the other poster said....LAURA! man i saw he bikini pic when she was in the miss florida pageant and holy moly my eyes popped out of my head.

It is obvious to most people PF is a bama cheerleader............Hate is a strong word..........Can't say I hate PF .............I dont remember PF being a Cam hater back in 2010 as I listen to him in my travels..........I honestly believe Auburn plays better football when media doesnt praise them which is why I wanted to see Auburn ranked 5th prior to SEC Championship.....................Just my opinion

PF makes loads of money playing off the lowest form of humanity....mostly bammers. He's part of what's wrong with people now. He likes to incite anger because it's profitable for him.. I really do wish people were not manipulated into participating. He serves no good purpose to the SEC or college football anywhere and to call him a sports journalist is a joke. I don't think he even understands the game all that well. He's just a big negative.

He understands 'the game' surrounding the game (i.e., the politics, intrigue, and power-brokering side of college football) and he is an expert pot-stirrer.
