Auburn had a much more balanced offense and its best defense since 2008 this season.

For just the second time in Gus Malzahn's time as head coach or offensive coordinator, Auburn averaged more passing yards than rushing yards in 2017. The last time that happened was 2012, when Malzahn was at Arkansas State, and the time before that was his first year as offensive coordinator in 2009.

While this was a somewhat expected change to the offense, it took two poor running performances in the SEC Championship Game and Peach Bowl for the numbers to swing in favor of the passing game for the season.

The most concerning offensive statistic was the number of sacks allowed. Of the 36 sacks Auburn surrendered this season, 23 came in its four losses compared to 13 in 10 wins.

Defensively, Auburn had its best year of pass and total defense since 2008. Despite seeing a slight increase in scoring and rushing yards allowed, the Tigers made tremendous improvement against the pass.

Special teams will be an area of emphasis in the offseason after the Tigers struggled in both kickoff return defense and punt return defense.
