Baseball at UAB

Hoping to keep the win streak alive at UAB....cool night for the game.   Missed the first half hour of the game.....but unless someone gets on the PBP, I will post a few comments along starting here.

Not on AU or SEC tv so it's a radio game for us tonight. 

So in the second inning, AU comes to bat trailing and Anthony and Johnson are on base with one out.

Well....pitcher tries a pick-off and ball goes down the first base line to the corner and Anthony comes around to score and Johnson goes to 3rd

Estes grounds the ball up the middle to SS for out number two and run scores from 3rd and AU takes the lead 2-1. 

Next batter Julien grounds a slow roller off the mound and beats it out for AU's first hit.

Holland at bat with 2 outs

Holland walks to give Jarvis a chance to drive in another run or two.

UAB has a guy in the bullpen already.....top of 2nd.....chance for AU to break this open early perhaps.

Jarvis takes called strike 3 and inning is over.  AU up 2-1

Pitcher tonight for AU is Ryan Hoerter....freshman from  Wisconsin.

Hoerter throwing a lot of pitches....gets a couple outs with a runner in scoring position and finally a long run for Johnson to track down a deep ball to the outfield for out number three and AU comes to bat with the lead. top of third

Williams walks and that's it for the UAB starter.....made it through 2 innings but struggled with the last several batters.

New pitcher hit Venter with his first pitch....so two runners on base with no outs.

Davis at bat now.....working the count

After about 9 or nine pitches Davis fouls out and the runners hold. 

Anthony at bat and grounds into DP right away.

Bottom of third....AU leading 2-1

Fly to RF for out number one.    

next batter pops to Venter at first and Hoerter moving though the batting order for the second time.

And next batter sends Estes to the warning track for out number three

Quick inning but he did not fool anyone....some hard hit balls.

UAB staying with Gates on the mound....gets first batter quickly....then 

Estes bats ......gets a break when shortstop misjudged the ball in foul territory along the third base line.  And then Estes flies to CF for out 2.

Julien at bat....has the only hit for AU which did not figure into the AU scoring however.  Both runs were unearned and helped by pitcher making a bad throw trying to pick Anthony off first. 

Julien takes strike 3 and that's it for the 4th....still 2-1 and cold bats tonight.

First UAB batter hits one out to tie the game.....and that was quick......so game is now tied at 2.

Hoerter might be getting near the end....Ryan Watson and Anderson are warming up. 

So the next batter  walks and the guys in the bull pen are picking up the pace.  

Hoerter still in the game and will face at least one more batter.   Having trouble finding the strike zone. and walks the next batter....so two on and nobody out and that is about it.  

Hoerter's first start of the year and has done pretty well...three innings plus is about what was expected....that HR kind of shook him I guess because he lost his control ....had done pretty well prior to that..

Ryan Watson comes in and will face some trouble with two on base and nobody out.

UAB tries a sac bunt....looked like it would go foul but stays fair and bases are now full.  Big dispute....Butch and AU upset over the call.

Butch avoided getting tossed but seems he was not happy over the call.

And Watson walks in a run.....3rd walk of the inning and UAB takes the lead...3-2

And that's it for Watson it seems...and now Elliott Anderson is on the mound with a load of trouble facing him.

Needs a K or DP to start shutting this down.

And Anderson gives up a base hit...drives in another run and still bases full and nobody out....UAB up 4-2

Finally an out....swinging K...... so AU deep hoping for chance for DP to end the trouble.

3 walks and 3 hits this inning ....and Anderson behind in the count again 3-0.......but gets a couple strikes for a full count..

And on the 3-2 pitch there is DP ....grounder to Holland and then to first for the out and to get out of the inning.  It wasn't pretty but Anderson did what needed doing....

Holland drives a double into the corner to give us our first real hit of the night....Jarvis at the plate with a chance to advance the runner.  ...grounds to SS who misplays the ball indecisive about the thrown .... and Jarvis is safe and Holland goes to 3rd.....so runners on the corners and no outs.  Jarvis was given a hit on the play.

Williams at the plate....playing catcher tonight....pops the ball along the 3rd base line...foul ball caught by 3B and Jarvis advances to 2nd. 

Venter at the plate.....and the UAB pitcher is done for the night..

AU still trailing 4-2  with 2 runs in scoring position and one out....

Venter leading the SEC in hitting ....

Kind of an unintentional intentional walk for Venter .......and he goes to first to fill the bases for Davis with one out..

Davis at the plate.....with 0-2 count....needs to avoid DP ...oops....hits it back to the mound.....throw to plate and then catcher throws to first.  Runner appeared safe but was then called out for interference......so it's a double play and the inning is over and no runs scored.......Bummer....

Well, next inning does not start well...error by Holland and UAB runner ends up at 2nd with no outs...

Passed ball and runner goes to 3rd......and a base hit drives in another run....5-2 for UAB now....and still nobody out.

And another pitcher for AU....gonna see a good part of the staff tonight I guess.......Blake Schillici on the mound now.

and BS gets his first batter with a called strike.......next batter lays down a.sac bunt and moves the runner along with 2 outs...

Meanwhile, Coker is warming up in the pen..

Well..... It's hard to tell from radio what's going on but Butch doesn't usually get that hot about calls so it does create suspicion.

Another base hit and another unearned run so it's 6-2.....

Looking more and more like a typical mid week game....walks, errors and lack of timely hitting.  

Still some time to turn this around but dang this game is already over 2 hours long and only 5th inning. 

So Coker comes in now to get this last out and get this inning over with.
