I thought boobie looks the most physically gifted. CJ looked good enough to not use a half speed/ injured back in critical games. We saw depth.

Gus doesn't need depth at RB.  One will get 90% of the carries.

I would use Tolbert instead of  Miller and see how he does. But you know how many A Day games had a walkon as a MVP? lol. This is when they shine.

But who knows. Look what happened with Hastings. Out of no where, a key offensive part.

I wouldn't say Hastings came out of nowhere. He was only the second person ever to surpass 2000 yards receiving in high school in Arkansas.

Tolbert, on the other hand. He was actually a QB in high school and for 2 years at a small liberal arts university in Arkansas before coming to Auburn. Last year was his first at running back.

I would. lol. When a player walks on at Auburn and tries out as a kicker, then I would say he came out of nowhere. In 2016 our roster was still listing him as a kicker. He wasn't anywhere on the depth chart until last year as a WR.  I would say he came out of no where....

You're welcome to totally dismiss what he did in high school. I just don't think most people would do the same. The only reason he was a walk-on is that his buddy told him he couldn't play for an SEC school, so he called Auburn a few days before signing day to prove him wrong. He wasn't on many people's radar because the scouts blew him off because of his size. He was a kicker because he was an on-sides specialist and Gus had seen him at a kicking camp at Auburn. Kodi saw his receiver film and said he was impressed which is how he got a shot at receiver.

So how did Kodi talk Gus into moving him to WR his freshman year when he wasn't a coach for us?  His first shot

:dunno:

He 1st switched to offense when Duke had his issues in fall camp freshman year, needed bodies.   During winter agility drills, his times impressed Gus, along with a lack of depth, and he decided to make the switch permanent.

"For Hastings, that shot came this past winter. When Auburn put its players through pro agility drills during off season conditioning, the sophomore set speed and agility records that still stand in the team’s weight room.

“I think that’s where it really took off,” he said.

Auburn’s staff felt like Hastings could give the team some much-needed depth at a receiver position thin on experience. And “he caught our eye,” head coach Gus Malzahn said."

I’m guessing he didn’t move to receiver. If we need an onside kick, he’ll do it. DC had no interest in using Will at wr. Kodi had a different opinion.

Yes, Tolbert deserves a shot.

Is he the fastest, most gifted RB on the team?  No.  But he is THICK and gets up the field pretty quick.  Sometimes, that is all you need.  I say put him into the rotation.  Maybe 2nd behind whoever ends up the #1 RB.   Let's see what he can do.

Beats me. I was reading a story about him and it said that Kodi saw his film and liked what he saw. Maybe it was referring to when he was at Arizona.

It was fun reading through some old stories on Hastings.  I forgot that he played for the team that never punted and only onside kicked.  He said he would get 12-20 targets a game.  To be honest I am surprised he did not put up 3000 yards in that offense with his skill set, guessing qb missed him a bunch!!

He did for his career.

The most interesting thing I read was a quote that said Gus was unimpressed with his onside kicking. You'd think as much as he did it, he'd be amazing at it. At one point, Gus said we fired him as a kicker and moved him to wide receiver (classic Gus "humor").

My great hope is that he'll come back in 2019 and really make waves, forcing scouts to not ignore a guy just because of his measurables.

Agree with the kicking part.   Man that would have been fun football to watch.  I hope they don't rush him back and let him get to full strength as well.

Yea... based on what PTB has hinted at, I don't thing rushing him back is an option. I just hope he can get to 100% by Fall 2019.

Our running back situation is just odd. I don't see a guy that will be a Tre Mason household name with 1400+ yards. This may be the closest we have seen at a committee of running backs in quite a while. Just not sold on Whitlow still. It's nice to have Tolbert and other talented backs.

Just remember, no one saw Barber coming either. Based on how Gus likes to roll with the hot hand and our general team history, I'm betting the one who wants it the most will end up with our annual 1000+ yards. I just think this year, we will have more effective supporting players to go with that one guy.  We might have the makings of a 4000+ yard season, on the ground, without the need for a rushing QB (which, incidentally, I don't think we've ever accomplished).

I hope you're right and I like the confidence. Part of me was really hoping Asa Martin would come in and set the world on fire; now I'm being told to believe in a walk-on and a largely unheralded redshirt freshman. The unknown at running back mixed in with uncertainty at the offensive line has me cautiously pessimistic right now. Our system is extremely running back friendly though.

People are getting WAY too worked up over A-Day, just like they do every year. I can't remember a single A-Day that resembled the season, one way or the other. Spring is Spring... you never know what you really have until Fall, and anywhere we are lacking, we have 5 months to improve.

He tends to be dismissed, but does he deserve to be taken more seriously?

His dad's a great guy, and though I haven't seen CJ in person since he was in elementary I gotta figure he is too. Hoping he gets some play time this year in real games.
