ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The Auburn men’s golf team took down Alabama, 3-2, to win the 2018 Southeastern Conference Championship. It is the first league title for the Tigers since 2002.

“I’m really proud of the guys, not only the five that were with us but the whole team and those cheering in the locker room back home,” head coach Nick Clinard said. “This win is for all 12 of them.”

In a tight battle between the teams all day, the championship was decided on the 18th hole of the final match. Freshman Wells Padgett stepped up and sank a 20-foot putt to clinch his point and the championship.

“It was a tough match out there,” Clinard said. “Alabama is great. We just fought to the end. My anchor, Wells Padgett, was the anchor all week in match play. We had him in that hole because we knew his confidence level in that spot and we knew that he could come through in the clutch and, boy, did he ever.”

Padgett and Alabama’s Jonathan Hardee were all square heading into the final hole after Hardee nearly aced the 17th. Padgett’s third shot on the 18th landed on the green, while Hardee was forced to chip onto the green. The freshman then measured the long putt and buried it, giving the Tigers the league title.

“That was the biggest putt I’ve ever made in my life,” Padgett said. “It was great being able to do it for my team. To do it as an individual in a tournament is cool, but doing it for your team is the greatest feeling.”

Auburn’s first point of the match came from southpaw Brandon Mancheno in a 2&1 victory over Alabama’s Wilson Furr. The freshman led for all but three holes before clinching the win with a par on the 17th hole.

Junior Trace Crowe also emerged victorious in his match with Davis Ridley of Alabama with a similar final score of 2&1. Crowe birdied the first hole to take the lead and never surrendered it, earning the result with a par on the 17th.

With the conference title, the Tigers have clinched an automatic berth into the NCAA Regionals. The 2018 Selection Show is set to take place Wednesday, May 2 at 4:30 p.m. CT on The Golf Channel. Regionals will take place May 14-16 in Raleigh, N.C., Bryan, Texas, Columbus, Ohio, Kissimmee, Fla., Norman, Okla. and Stockton, Calif.

For Auburn, winning an SEC championship in any sport is special. To win it on the final moment of the event is even more special. And to win it against rival Alabama is as good as it gets for Tiger players and fans alike.

Auburn men’s golf captured its first SEC team championship since 2002 — and its second title in program history — on Sunday with a dramatic 20-foot birdie putt from freshman Wells Padgett.

The putt gave Padgett a 1-up win in his match against Alabama’s Jonathan Hardee and a 3-2 advantage for Auburn in the match play final at Sea Island, Ga.

Padgett hit the putt with plenty of style, too. The freshman walked off the long putt before it went in the hole, prompting a huge celebration with his teammates on the side of the 18th green.

Auburn men’s golf entered the SEC championship as the No. 4 seed. The Tigers took down No. 5 seed Arkansas and No. 1 seed LSU on Saturday to advance to the final.

“I told our guys we had the best team coming in here and they believe it,” Auburn coach Nick Clinard said Saturday, according to the SEC’s official website. “They’re playing their tails off with grit and grind. LSU has a lot of talent and a great coaching staff, and we just happened to come out on the better end today. The best teams in the country play in the SEC. It’s hard to win in this league. It’s a blessing to even be in match play. We’re glad to be there.”

Auburn’s championship win on Sunday got the attention of its most famous golfer alumnus — Jason Dufner, who played for the Tigers from 1997 to 2000.

Championship Sunday!! ?⛳️. Proud of @AuburnMGolf for adding to the trophy case today.. lots of hard work and dedication goes into winning team championships in SEC.. Auburn family should be proud!! #tookbamadown

NCAA Regional play is set for May 14-16, with the NCAA Championship running from May 25-30 at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla.

This is what the stadium looked like in 1957, my Freshman year. What a difference 61 years makes!!! The building at the northern end was known as the Field House. That is where the players suited up and entered the field. My seat was at the southern end of the stadium in the east stands on the goal line. I rarely remember the games after the 3rd quarter as Jack Daniels had taken charge but it was a great experience and we won the National Championship for the first time. Once in a lifetime experience!!
