Jeremiah Dinson ready to take over as Auburn's starting field safety

James Crepea

Auburn has to replace both of its starting safeties both in production and leadership and Jeremiah Dinson has done everything to put himself in position to be the next quarterback of the defense.

Dinson spent some time at safety last season but made the move completely in the spring and was one of Auburn's top performers.

A shoulder injury ended his A-Day, but the early prognosis is for him to return in time for the season opener.

Jamien Sherwood made a great first impression in the spring and will be the backup as a true freshman.

"Dinson, he's like a coach on the field. Just from a big-picture standpoint, when you're back there watching everything go, you can really tell the guys that are the leaders on both side of the football. He really stands out just wit his communication, his attitude. He's a guy that coach can put at multiple positions."

Jeremiah Dinson was one of the top performers in the spring.

His move from Nickel to safety was expected and he did it so seamlessly that he's clearly in line to start at safety in the fall.

Dinson, who said he was up to 200 pounds in the spring, had 47 tackles with four pass breakups and a fumble recovery last season and should see increases in production, provided he stays healthy.

Jamien Sherwood might've been the top freshman early enrollee in the spring.

Auburn was thrilled with how both Sherwood and Quindarious Monday came in and performed as true freshmen, but Sherwood is ahead.

There's no question, Sherwood will be an immediately contributor and not just on special teams.

Next wave

Like Dinson, Jordyn Peters is a versatile piece of the secondary. Peters played mostly at Nickel last season, when he had 24 tackles and two pass breakups as a freshman. He could stay in that role or move to safety if need be.

Quindarious Monday is the backup at boundary safety. Freshmen typically stay at one position early on so he might not see as much time to the field.

Malcolm Askew (right) moved from corner to safety in the spring but an injury hampered his progress as he was held out of several practices.

Summer arrivals

Kolbi Fuqua was the third safety Auburn signed this year. With Sherwood and Monday enrolling early and doing well, it's most likely that Fuqua will redshirt this fall.

What we've written about Fuqua:

" If we lined up tomorrow it would be Dinson and Daniel Thomas, and then (Jamel) Dean and Noah Igbinoghene with (Javaris) Davis at star." -- Defensive coordinator Kevin Steele

I guess Noah had a pretty seamless transition to CB?

It would seem to be from previous comments from coaches. I don't remember seeing much of him at A-Day but he did get shook by RD in 7-on-7.

To be fair, a lot of people get shook by Davis
