Surprised no one is talking about this ruling today on here.  Maybe the biggest sports related SCOTUS decision of my lifetime.  Personally, I'm giddy as all get out about this.  Seems stupid that we can't gamble on sports legally except in one state, particularly when most other developed countries have been doing it for years.

..... While many other states run their own lottery system.

I agree.

I have no issue with the ruling but I think if it's to be regulated it should via a non government institution funded by fees applied to every bet.

Isn't that how Nevada operates?

So can Pete Rose be voted into the Hall of Fame...... a guy ahead of his time?

Hoping nobody really believes that players can be prevented from betting on their own games....would take an organization the size of the FBI to try and keep the process relatively honest.   And would seem to put baseball in the same position as the NFL ....have to announce health status of players and a last minute change of starting pitcher could be suspicious?

Looking at the states wanting to get in early, it seems the casino companies will be active right away.

And just an observation .....betting on the outcome of sporting events is no way similar to state lotteries....the results of which seem about impossible to influence by persons with criminal intent.

Possibly. However I would eliminate the regulations and let any tom, dick or harry set up a gambling business. Local betting sheets, in home poker games, dice in back alleys, wide open no restrictions. How about high school football betting, now that's an idea? I'll sit back, keep my money in my pocket and think wtf....lol.

That's happening now I know what you mean but imo this will be good for keeping Tony C and Fat Mike out of illegal gambling jmo.

I'm not sure what constitutes legal or illegal gambling anymore. I guess details will follow once the ruling is dissected. I suspect there will be strict rules where only the mega betting houses can thrive with little competition and a joe schmo like me has no chance to offer gambling services. Also, I wouldn't want to see regulation administered by a government entity. Actually I would prefer zero regulation because I think people can regulate and protect their own spending.

Again, I'm okay with the ruling but think it should be wide open for competition and almost zero regulation.

I don’t think so, the Nevada Gaming Control Board which regulates the gaming industry is definitely a government agency.

I dont gamble, at all. If Kim and I get drug to a casino, usually on a couples get-a-way weekend etc, we take seriously $30 in quarters. We play just enough to be friendly to the crowd. When this site first opened, we were deluged by gambling sites wanting to advertise here. I refused. But today, gambling is one more thing I have morphed on. I still dont gamble. Wont ever. I may buy a lotto ticket for fun while traveling, etc. We spend less than $50/year on a good year.

BUT...it is time for a lottery in Alabama. And it the states want to legalize gambling, they should. I am also for legalizing weed. If people have vices that are not too bad, then the states should benefit from it. We legalized and tax alcohol, right?

Many states already have their own bills written and were waiting for definitive ruling in this case. You’re about to see some big changes.

And that's why I can appreciate why leagues would ban players or coaches from such betting.

And betting on sports events has many similarities with betting on lotteries, except there is a reasonable chance you might acually win betting on sports.  State lotteries exploit people.

Agree...I consider lotteries as a tax on the ignorant but hard to tell people what to do with their money.   JMO but seems that lottery players are providing the money for other people's kids to go to college. ...and the real beneficiaries seem to be the colleges and universities in states with lottery funded scholarships where schools seem to think there is no ceiling on tuition and fees.

Betting on sports?    guess one could believe he or she has the ability to improve the odds by knowing something about the game but as we've discussed elsewhere , betting on SEC sports is about the same as a lottery.

Oh there are a couple of road trips in the SEC that just got a lot better.  Ole Miss (Tunica) and Kentucky (ponies + sports betting) say hello!

Betting in person is one thing ...at casinos, but if it goes openly on line the credit card companies will make a fortune...and credit card debt will skyrocket....JMO.

At work, we have whole departments blowing maybe $200+ /month on TN lotto tix.

The reality is that people play the lottery/gamble/smoke weed. It is time we, the State of Alabama, benefited from those resources.

I hate to see the government taking advantage of people's stupidity or weaknesses.  .   Seems like that kind of action is contrary to the role of government.

If all government is about is taking in money and then giving most of it back (minus handling costs) to people the government leaders find "worthy" then go ahead.

But what' going on is the lower the lower economic classes are playing the lottery and such so that the children of the middle and upper classes can got to college free or at subsidized fees.......something just seems wrong to me about that system.

I find it funny that some of the same people who think Alabama politicians are crooked want to put more money in their pockets or at their discretion. The schools love it though. look at Georgia for example. Their lottery was to go to help fund college student. But the schools just kept raising tuition and now the fund can't provide full tuition for students. Maybe I'm wrong on this and one of our Georgia guys and elabotate.

You can gamble online right now.  It's not hard to open an account on Bovada and play anything your heart desires while reliably getting a check when you want to cash out.  Also, in most states, you can gamble on horses/dogs via twinspires.com legally.

The government already does this.  People pay extra taxes for the opportunity to smoke in most places.  We just call them "sin taxes".

No one is forcing people to play the lottery.  They choose to do so at their own peril.  I play every week too because it's fun.  Free will is hell of a thing.

Not disagreeing with anything you said. My question is what is a vice that is not too bad, and what is a vice that is bad? Who gets to decide? If said vice is legalized and taxed, does that make it a good vice? Weed used to be pretty much taboo, in the not too far past, but now it is not? Are there other drugs that need to be considered for legalization? What about prostitution? It is legal in Nevada. What about other states? Should it be?

Apparently, alcohol was judged to be "not that bad." And apparently  weed was judged to be bad a while back.

I know what my own personal answers are for all that. But, like myself, times have changed, We have so many people locked up over non-violent drug crimes it is just crazy. Do we really need to lead the world in number of convicts? Society changes all the time. And it should indeed be reflected in the Code of Laws.

In the 1800s being a horse thief might get you hung. Today it is just a theft.
In the early 1900s you could get cocaine etc in fountain drinks and the drug store, not any more.
For thousands of years everyone pretty much went skinny dipping in the community water hole. Then came the Victorian Era, and everyone went to being covered from head to toe for swimming. Now days, you can see anything from surfer shorts/jams to thongs. Things and People change.

We tried to enforce Prohibition and it failed miserably. You have to weigh the costs of enforcing a decision vs the cost/benefits of legalizing and taxing it. Like it or not, people drink booze & smoke weed.

Prostitution? Man, THAT is the slipperiest slope out there. My Dad married a woman that was 22 years younger than him. It was a transactional marriage. She essentially married for $$$ and he married for straight up for genitalia. What makes that any different than Prostitution? The laughable marriage contract? Again, i have my own opinions on all that.
