Gus Malzahn: 2019 recruiting could be 'our best class'

By Brandon Marcello

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama — Auburn has been inside or just outside the top 10 in recruiting every year during the Gus Malzahn era.

The Tigers fell just short of the top 10 for the first time in his six-year tenure with the nation's No. 12 group in February.

And while the Tigers sit at No. 21 nationally with nine commitments as of Tuesday, Malzahn has a message for diehard fans keeping track of the recruiting calendar, visits and more as the Tigers focus on the 2019 signing class.

"This has a chance to be our best class since at least I’ve been here with the way it’s setting up right now and the response that we’re getting," Malzahn said Tuesday outside a booster club event in Huntsville. "We have a chance to finish strong and that’s what’s exciting. I think a lot of recruits and their families see the future of Auburn football, so it’s a really exciting time."

Yes, Malzahn believes a top 5 class is on the horizon for the Tigers. His best class ranked No. 6 nationally in 2014, according to the 247Sports Composite. That class included two 5-star prospects and 11 four-star players. The biggest names were running backs Roc Thomas and Kamryn Pettway, linebacker Tre' Williams, future All-American offensive lineman Braden Smith, quarterback Sean White and receiver Duke Williams.

Malzahn reiterated his belief the seventh signing class of his head coaching career at Auburn could be his best yet at Auburn.

"Yeah, there’s no doubt with the way it’s setting up," Malzahn said. "Our philosophy is a little bit different than some of these schools that will just take commitments and then they have de-commitments a month later. We develop longterm, true relationships. We’re a little more patient than most but we think we’re in a great spot to finish."

Auburn's biggest recruiting weekend of the summer included a handful of 5- and 4-star prospects for 2019 and beyond. The recruiting weekend is set up as a fun-and-games visit with little-to-no-talk about football. Players instead play games such as Family Feud and participate in competitive eating contests.

Auburn linebacker commitment Owen Pappoe exited Big Cat Weekend with a belief the Tigers will sign these four players: 3-star defensive end Colby Wooden, 4-star offensive guard Keiondre Jones, 4-star Georgia linebacker commitment Trezmen Marshall and 5-star cornerback Andrew Booth.

"Big Cat was a huge success," Malzahn said. "It was our 10th annual (Big Cat Weekend) and this was one of the best ones we’ve ever had. It was a great response, we had a great group of guests with families. That will really help us later on as far as the way we finish this class."

A nice group of 4 to land. It sounds like Gus is confident that we will sign all 3 of these players. Adding those should push us near or in the top 10,  I like Gus' confidence in this class no doubt.
