REPORT: UF players armed with frying pan, rocks, Airsoft rifles during on-campus confrontation

Author: Matt Head

7-8 minutes

Multiple University of Florida football players face possible university discipline after an on-campus confrontation involving airsoft guns and lying to police.

The confrontation occurred at the university's Keys Residential Complex on the evening of May 28. It involved several UF football players and a reported Gainesville-area gambler named Devante' Zachery - aka "Tay Bang" - and his friends, according to a UF police report obtained by First Coast News.

University police began their investigation after a witness called 911 in reference to a suspicious person. The witness said he saw 10 people arguing and believed they had guns. The witness added, “the weapons resemble assault rifles.”

The scene was captured on surveillance and cell phone video, the 17-page incident report states. The video shows "about 10–15 individuals, holding what appeared to be weapons,” according to the report.

Zachery, 21, and his friends were waiting for the football players near the dorms. The football players began to confront the group, but left in vehicles, the report states. As the group left, they could be heard yelling, “We coming back strapped,” the report states.

The other group returned and a confrontation ensued. One player reported the group had a baseball bat, a red laser being pointed at another player’s chest and another individual threatening “Come any closer, I’ll spray you.”

Zachery told police, he observed one football player holding “some sort of assault rifle and some others were [holding] rocks.” Police wrote, they didn’t believe Zachery’s story and thought he was minimizing the incidents he was describing, the report states.

According to the player, once they heard police sirens, and everyone left.

Good relationship turns sour

According to a university police interview with UF tight end C’yontai Lewis, Zachery had a “good relationship” with Lewis “while the football team was winning, but when they began losing, “Tay Bang” would call them “garbage” and would complain about losing money after he bet on football games,” the report states.

The report also says Lewis stopped associating with Zachery. According to Zachery’s interview with police, the issues “initially began with some joking around, but has since become more aggressive.” The only person that said Zachery was gambling, was Lewis, according to police.

UPDATE: First Coast News spoke with Zachery by phone Thursday morning. Zachery claimed our report only told one side of the story, however when offered multiple times to share his side he did not.

The football players initially denied having any involvement with the incident, according to the report. While searching for evidence, police didn’t find any bullets. However they did find a frying pan that, according to the report, was seen on camera being used by one of the athletes during the confrontation.

Wide receiver Kadarius Toney and defensive tackle Kyree Campbell were recommended to UF’s Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution department for an “incident by holding and pointing what appears to be assault rifles (later determined to be airsoft rifles) at other individuals on campus,” the report states.

Wide receivers Tyrie Cleveland, Rick Wells, tight end Kemore Gamble and quarterback Emory Jones were also recommended to the Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution department for lying to university police about the incident in question, the report states.

None of the players listed above have been charged with a crime.

University police discussed with Toney how dangerous the situation could have been, as a result of using the airsoft guns that appeared real. Toney replied that other guys try and pick fights with the football players when they go out into public, the report states.

Zachery was given a no trespass warning from all university property for a period of three years, the report states. After Zachery’s interview with university police, he posted on Facebook: “Damn the University of Florida got some b**** a** football players,” the report states.

During the investigation, police reported inspecting the airsoft rifles. “The one rifle made to look like an AR15, which Toney was carrying, had the orange tip mostly painted black making it look even more like a real rifle,” the report states. Florida Gators Director of Student-Athlete Development Vernell Brown assured police the airsoft guns would not be seen on campus again, the report states.

According to the University code of conduct:

Firearms or Other Weapons Violations. Possession, use, sale, or distribution of any firearm, ammunition, weapon or similar device not explicitly permitted under University of Florida Regulation 2.001. Prohibited devices include, but are not limited to, stun guns, pellet guns, BB guns, paintball guns, slingshots, archery equipment, any dangerous chemical or biological agent, or any object or material, including but not limited to knives, capable of causing, and used by the offending person to cause, or to threaten physical harm.

A university spokesperson declined to comment to First Coast News about this story citing student privacy laws. First Coast News also reached out to the university athletic department multiple times, but have not received a response.

This is not the first incident for the UF football team this week. Freshman Justin Watkins is facing four charges, including two felonies, after his second arrest in the past three months. In 2016, Cleveland and Wells were arrested after being accused of firing BB guns on campus and causing more than a $1,000 in property damage.

According to the report, the officer says he believes “great strides have been made to increase a better relationship with these student athletes so that they feel comfortable in reporting incidents to law enforcement when they arise.”

Dan Mullen said in a statement:

“We were made aware of the incident when it occurred and immediately began following campus protocol. This has been an opportunity for us to educate our players about the dangers and negative perceptions that can occur when conflict arises, and how important honesty and good decision making is.”

WOW. A gambler hanging out with football players.....and a huge confrontation in public. How ugly is that? You know there's a deeper story there somewhere.

The gators are in big trouble before the season even starts and Mullen is getting a nice big dose of karma.

Well let’s see here: he threw us under the bus with the Cam issue. He recruited players that receive money from “other schools” (sounds like the Cam issue again) and then during NCAA investigation those players received immunity to rat their instate rival out, which by the NCAAs own admission the players gave no physical evidence or electronic evidence to prove their stories were even true. He also allowed a signee to still be admitted to Moo St. after a video surfaced of that signee beating a girl as she lay on the street during an altercation, stating he allowed him to enroll, after all, since the altercation did not happen while he represented Moo St. so he has no responsibility to punish the kid.

I hope karma take a big ole chunk out of is arse.....but then again UF athletic Dept has that super lawyer, Huntley Johnson, on speed dial, nothing will happen, yes I know it is not criminal charges but possible disciplinary action with the school, but he has been know to help with that also.

When a story about college football players begins with someone named Tay Bang whose profession is “Gambler”, you know its going to be ugly. And ole Tay has earned his Gambler title by the ripe old age of 21. Mr. Mullen may regret leaving Cow Bell land.

Frying pans, Gamblers.....It's obvious that this was a dispute over the results of a pan fried ramen cook-off.

Report: Alleged gambler says he gave discounts to UF Gator football players

Author: Juliette Dryer, Matthew Head

6-7 minutes

The conflict between University of Florida football players and an alleged Gainesville gambler known as “Tay Bang” dates back to well before the May 2018 confrontation involving airsoft rifles, rocks and a frying pan, according to a new report from the Gainesville Police Department.

The report, obtained by First Coast News, details ongoing tension between the players and a group of local men that turned violent as recently as early July. The Gainesville police report is dated 10 p.m. July 25, which is just hours after First Coast News first broke the story.

According to the incident report, Gainesville police was alerted to an ongoing issue between the UF football players and Devante’ Zachery’s group of friends. Zachery provided police with the following information as detailed by the Gainesville police report.

The conflict started on Feb. 10 while Zachery and some friends were inside Gainesville’s Rain nightclub. Zachery said he got into a playful argument with three UF football players about guns.

The following weekend, a group of football players jumped Zachery’s friend and that led to Zachery exchanging words with the football players at the Oaks Mall in Gainesville. According to the GPD report, an officer witnessed the aftermath of the fight. A bar security manager confirmed to police a fight occurred between some UF football players and a group of local men.

The weekend after that, Feb. 25, police witnessed what they described as a group of men wearing Gator colors and emblems. They described the group as loud, agitated and walking in an aggressive manner. Police overheard the group saying “Where they at?” and asked whether they were athletes, to which they responded they were on the football team. According to the report, a GPD officer responded they needed to leave before they got into trouble.

“I told them it that it was not smart to load up the team to travel to someone’s else neighborhood with the intent to fight,” a GPD officer wrote in the report released to First Coast News.

The players left, according to the report.

The next incident detailed in the report is the May 2018 incident on the UF campus. According to the report, Zachery told police some football players noticed him on campus and started throwing rocks at his car, chased him with pots and pans and what he believed was an AR-15. (According to a witness video and a report from University of Florida Police obtained by First Coast News, Kadarius Toney was using an airsoft gun with a black-painted tip designed to look like a real gun. A second football player was also carrying an assault-style airsoft gun, according to university police.)

The report said Zachery told police he had a good relationship with tight end C’yontai Lewis and another University of Florida football player. Zachery told police he would give them discounts on rental cars at Enterprise, according to the report. In the initial report obtained by First Coast News, Lewis was the only football player to tell police Zachery bet on football games. Lewis told police the two had a good relationship until the Gators started losing.

On July 4, wide receiver Tyrie Cleveland was knocked out by a friend of Zachery near the Rain Night club in Gainesville, according to the report. Zachery refused to tell GPD who hit Cleveland and denied being there during the incident. “He stated Cleveland was knocked out badly, but did not know if Cleveland needed medical attention,” Zachery told police in the report.

Zachery told police, according to the report, that he feared his life was in danger. He said he had been receiving threatening phone calls and text messages and believed people were trying to lure him to the football players.

Zachery also told police one of the football players told him “there is money behind this,” which Zachery took to mean there was a price on his head. Zachery made other allegations to police, including that same football player was a member of the Bloods, though the conflict had nothing to do with the player’s alleged gang affiliation.

At the end of the report, police advised Zachery and his friends to end contact with the football players. Zachery repeatedly told police he wanted to meet with law enforcement and the football players to resolve this situation.

When reached by phone last week, Zachery told First Coast News we didn’t have both sides of the story, but he declined to elaborate. He has since stopped responding to First Coast News.

The University’s athletics department released the following statement to First Coast News:

“We understand GPD has followed up last week’s UPD report with a background report that has Devante Zachery (aka Tay Bangs) as its primary source. We are not aware if there will be any additional information provided by GPD on this matter.Anytime we get information involving our student athletes we look into it.”

According to a separate Gainesville Police Department report, on July 22 - a month after the melee - UF wide receiver Kadarius Toney was pulled over for a seatbelt violation. During the stop, police found a black rifle in the back seat. It was real. The report says Toney initially tried to elude police, before eventually stopping. Toney and another passenger were briefly detained before being released on scene. Toney told police he bought the rifle and had it in his vehicle for protection from locals, according to the report.

FWIW, in the movie “Tangled,” the frying pan is the weapon of choice!

I am minded of a saga (some time back) that played itself out (over several months) in the "Local News" section of the Tuscaloosa News. I (truly) believe that the original-article headline was very close to "Jasper man killed by lawn-mower bomb, which also killed his dog" (all particulars of which were, of course, repeated in every sequel).

Any story that includes "Tay Bang" and "frying pan, rocks, Airsoft rifles" will be stretched out as long as some news agency can figure out a way to extend it.
