Things I Think I Saw: Auburn vs Arkansas

No. Absolutely not.

I just don't get the lack of development on offense.  I truly felt last year that the GA and UAT games represented the breakthru we had all been expecting.  I don't understand why we have gone backwards on so many areas.

Anders has a BIG leg. Even bigger than Daniel. But where he has the advantage in power, Daniel was much more accurate. This was immediately apparent to me last season when I would watch Anders warm up, but I thought he'd improve. So far that's not been the case, but he needs the attempts and the coaches need to show him they have faith he CAN do it by calling on him in those situations. (And let's be honest - we'll likely be needing those 50+ yard FGs.)

If it weren't for Ryan Davis' pure athleticism on those screen passes - Auburn would likely have no passing game at all. Aside from KJ last year, I don't think there was a single player who made so much out of nothing for us.

I watched the replay of the game last night...

  • other than losing containment on a lot of QB pressures and runs; there's not a lot to complain about from the defense.
  • Offense was a Greek tragedy
    • We cannot pass more than 7 yards downfield...correction...we cannot complete a pass more than 7 yards downfield
    • We had multiple instances of Ark playing 2 deep and 5 across and we would run 4 receivers directly at the 5 DB/LB and they would just turn around...they basically covered themselves...multiple times....
    • I think ARky had our passing playbook...thank heaven #23 can break ankles with his moves...
    • Whitlow has potential...did some things to get extra yards at times....but the others cannot break a tackle
    • Given the speed we have; we have to test the outside more
    • Our line got it's head handed to it...completely out-quicked off the ball...cannot block a strong edge rusher at all
    • Can you imagine what a real opponent will do to this offense?  The Washington game may be the high point of the year...painful

This might put some things in perspective. We've had our struggles on the o-line (no denying that) but we've also faced two of the best run defenses in the country so far:

Get ready for the "They are top 10 because our OL sucks and we couldn't block them" replies....

Love the optimism, and I hope it bears out over the season, but out of the 8 total games those defenses have played:

Eastern Illinois
Colorado State
North Texas
Miami
Southeastern Louisiana
La Tech
Auburn twice

I realize many schools are playing softer competition early, but there are only 3 P5 matchups in that list and 2 of them came against us.

I'm sorry. I know I'm being a jerk. I just... I...

*Long exhale*

After watching last night’s SNF game, I realized how much we did not appreciate enough KJ.  Granted, RB isn’t our only issue but a star back there covers up (and opens up a lot).

Yep and he was our only answer to the red zone woes we have experienced over the past few years.
