abw0004 10,095
Quote How solid are the commits? Luke Deal gives his take By Keith Niebuhr Auburn tight end commit Luke Deal of Greenwood (S.C.) Emerald attended last Saturday’s Auburn-Tennessee game at Jordan-Hare Stadium and while the Tigers didn’t come out on top Deal said he and the other commits had another good bonding afternoon. Before the game, he was spotted chatting with the likes of Bo Nix, Owen Pappoe and Colby Wooden. Additionally, Deal and his family spent time with Auburn tight ends coach Larry Porter, who was instrumental in his recruitment. Late in the game, Deal paced behind the south endzone like a nervous fan as the Tigers tried to rally against the Vols. While on campus, Deal also did a little recruiting -- something he also does when he's back home. How solid is Deal, the No. 12 tight end nationally in the 247Sports rankings, to the Tigers, what is the general vibe like right now with the Auburn commits and what can he provide to the team when he arrives in 2019? Here’s a quick Q&A with Deal, who committed to Auburn back in May and already has attended multiple Tigers games this season: AUBURN UNDERCOVER: How are all the commits bonding these days? Some of you didn't know the others that well when you committed to Auburn. But now, you guys spend a lot of time together at the games and are part of a group chat. How well does the group get along with one another individually and as a whole -- and how often do you communicate? DEAL: Man, all of the commits have a good relationship with each other. We all talk every day and already have some pretty good chemistry together. AUBURN UNDERCOVER: Auburn is in a little bit of a slump right now. The team has lost two straight and went from inside the top 10 to being unanked in a matter of weeks. As a commit, that probably hasn't been fun to watch. What is the general vibe with the other commits about that? DEAL: Every team has off days. We understand the struggles but use it as motivation. The 2019 class wants to take Auburn to a level that they've never been before. We want that challenge. AUBURN UNDERCOVER: When a program starts losing games and there is noise about the stability of a coaching staff, it can impact recruiting. With the commits, how solid do you think these guys are to Auburn right now? DEAL: The guys I talk to aren't wavering. They are committed and ready to make a difference, too. AUBURN UNDERCOVER: How about with you -- how locked in are you with Auburn right now? DEAL: I'm 100% with Auburn. They're struggling right now but I'm still all in. AUBURN UNDERCOVER: Who are some of the bigger recruiting targets you and the other Auburn commits are working on -- and is there anyone you feel good about Auburn’s chances with at this time? DEAL: We’re working on Will Putnam, Noah Cain, Clay Webb, and Wanya Morris as of late. I think all of them bonded with our group of guys and we have a shot with most of them. I talk mostly with Will. I think we can get him! He’s a great dude and a monster on the field. AUBURN UNDERCOVER: You're 6-feet-5, 237 pounds. You can block. You can catch. Right now, you're even playing quarterback for your high school team. What will you bring to the Auburn offense in your opinion? DEAL: I think I can be an asset to our running game as a blocker and as a big target downfield. The play action passing game will improve with a big tight end. AUBURN UNDERCOVER: You get to Auburn as an early enrollee ... How excited are you about spring practice? Even though your season is still going, how much is your mind on playing at Auburn? DEAL: I'll be there in January. I can't wait to be there. Auburn is home and even though I'm making the most of my final season with my brothers here in Greenwood, I am excited for the road ahead. AUBURN UNDERCOVER: You've watched the Tigers closely this season. In person and on television. In your opinion, what does Auburn need to do to turn it around in 2018? DEAL: We need to be physical up front on both sides of the ball and execute on the big plays on offense. Once the team establishes a rhythm, they'll be rolling. They just need to keep pounding. AUBURN UNDERCOVER: What is your relationship like with Porter? DEAL: I have an awesome relationship with Coach Porter. I can talk to him about anything and I know he will help me become not only a better player, but a better ma AUBURN UNDERCOVER: Which Auburns commits are you closest with -- and why is that? DEAL: I'm close with a bunch of them. Tyler (Fromm), Bo (Nix), Keiondre (Jones), Owen (Pappoe), Colby (Wooden). We all are close because we all have the same vision for Auburn -- a national championship. We already have a really good relationship with each other and I think it'll just get better. I can't wait to play with those guys. Quote Auburn 2019 commit: ‘We’re ready to get there and change the program around’ By Sam Blum The Class of 2019 for Auburn football has a group text where they talk daily. It’s a way for them to get to know one another, become friends, and in some cases, to add prospects on the fence and convince them to officially join. Well almost everyone in the group text was watching on Saturday when Auburn was stunned at home, 30-24, by a Tennessee program that hadn’t won an SEC game since 2016. The prevailing conversation on Saturday was that this 2019 group could be the antidote to a snake-bitten football program. “We’re ready to get there and change the program around,” four-star WR commit Jashawn Sheffield told AL.com after the game. Sheffield, from Frederica Academy in Georgia, also relayed the message of the nation’s top dual-threat QB prospect, Bo Nix. “Bo just said, and it was really funny how he did it too, he was like, ‘I know this sounds kind of corny but I’m ready to get to Auburn and change things around,’" Sheffield recalled. “I was like, ‘Me too bro.’” “Bo Nix, he’s just a really good talker,” said current Sheffield teammate and fellow Auburn commit Jaylin Simpson. “He really does most of the talking.” Sheffield said the conversation was mostly between him, Nix, Simpson, DE commit Colby Wooden, and the nation’s top OLB prospect Owen Pappoe. “We interact pretty much daily, we talk all the time about where the program’s headed, what they’re doing, how they’re looking, ways we can improve when we get there,” said Wooden, after attending Saturday’s game. Wooden added: "They’re just ready to get there and impact [Auburn] in a special way, do their job, and make the program special. Whenever someone in the group text starts talking about another college, Sheffield said the rest try to pump them up, saying things like “War Eagle.” Specifically, they’re trying to bring in top RB recruit Noah Cain, who also was at Saturday’s game. When asked if the atmosphere in the group text remained positive, Sheffield was clear: “Yes sir. That’s how I feel about Auburn, just in general.”

corchjay 5,311
That's how most recruits will think... that they will be the one to make the difference. We may lose one or 2 recruits but a mass exodus won't happen. It's still a very high honor to play for AU
GBAU83 212
I appreciate Bo Nix's plans and attitude to come and fix the program, but Gus ain't gonna let a true freshman start. Maybe he should, but he hasn't given Cord Sandberg a chance yet and he should have against Tenn - couldn't have done worse than Stidham. And for the levity of it all, right now I would take Patrick Nix as the OC next year with his son Bo coming in as the QB. They have been a successful team at high school, give them a shot in college...

There were multiple throw aways and drops by Sal and Slayton alone. Could’ve easily had over 360 yards passing and 3 TDs.

Sully to Beasley 643
Hopefully most of this recruting class will honor their commitments. I would love to see Patrick Nix as the next OC. I think the only way that Pat makes that move is if he has absolute assurity from someone over Gustavo (AD Green?) guranteeing that Gustavo stays out of his way and lets him run his offense. No. Patrick Nix is a HS coach. We already have an ex HS coach as our HC, and a OC who was trained some by our HC. What does Nix bring other than an Auburn pedigree with him? Geez, he is running an offense against HS teams, not SEC or P5 teams? This option will never happen.

He recruited & coached a leading ACC rusher, a leading ACC WR, and did a decent overall recruiting job as their recruiting coordinator. Of course we are talking ACC which IMO is historically like the big 10 with generally better academics.

The problem now vs then is that Gus could be depended on to run his offense and that OC could just be an excellent recruiter and nothing else. Being an OC for a Paul Johnson system is more of a patsy title than even being our OC, there's no masquerade there about how little playcalling/systematic duties you have over there

I_M4_AU 7,644
I hate having to explain a “meant for levity” post but, this Pat Nix OC is getting out of hand. The levity was that since Bo Nix gave his commitment a vote of confidence it obviously meant Pat Nix was going to be our OC, just like Malzahn got into the business at Arky. My fault, I should have explained it better.

They are negative recruiting our passing attack and we are giving them all the ammo they need. But with things where they are, everything is up in the air. If we have a new coach, how will that coach and staff be perceived by the recruits. If we keep Gus and Chip, I think it will be tough recruiting WRs and QBs. Long way until Feb.
