Interesting SEC Passing Stats

A couple of interesting stats from CFB Film Room's Twitter feed. These are SEC QB stats, not SEC team stats.

Air Yards Per Completion

This one is interesting because it is the average downfield yardage per completion from the line of scrimmage to the point caught, not the total yardage for the catch and run. Some of this statistic depends on how well the OL protects, and how many progressions the QB can go through. Some of this statistic depends on the passing game design. A four vertical Air Raid system is going to produce more downfield air yards than a screen-centric passing game. The median and mean seem to be around 6.6 yards per completion. Auburn is last at 4.3 yards per completion.

Success Rate on 3rd and Long Dropbacks (Includes First Downs Gained by Scrambling)

Stidham is in the middle of the pack at 24.2%. The mean is 28%, the median is about 25.7%. Certainly Stidham has been in more 3rd and long positions than other QBs, which might pull his numbers down. No doubt fewer 3rd and longs and a better pass protecting OL allows a QB to do better.
