I'm sure Leath still had to approve Pearl's new contract this summer, did he not? He may not have been the one that spearheaded the contract extension like he did for Gus but I'll be surprised if he still didn't have to sign off on it, correct?

He likely did, but he was also getting considerable pressure from money people that he better keep Pearl.  Leath was the only one talking about firing Pearl.  Everyone else was pulling the same direction.  That's not the case here and seeing as Leath negotiated this terrible contract, I'm betting he wants to save face.  To me, this boils down to Learn doing what's best for his image and not Auburn.

Also, it's been noted in another thread by a mod that Greene is no fan of Gus.  Better for him to lay back here and let Leath take the hit.  Gives Greene more power next year when we're doing a full blown coaching search.

Outside of the first two mentioned, did you really just name a bunch of unproven coaches? I'm not a fan of where Malzahn has the program right now, but I don't see buying him out to replace him with someone not proven.

Honestly.. the only person I'd fire Malzahn (this season) for is Bob Stoops (or Dabo, but lol).

Anything else is just throwing money away , IMO.

We have to be prepared if Stoops does not want the job. Heck maybe lure Urban Meyer or maybe Harbaugh. Derek Mason could be an excellent coach in a position where he has the ability to recruit top tier players. I know Mason does not have a great record, but he gets everything out of his players. He is aggressive and a baller 110%. Lincoln Riley could be a possibility if we could outbid Oklahoma on him. Mike Norvell has done a super job at Memphis and could be a top tier coach if given the  chance. Look at what he has done. Liepold has been successful at every stop in his career. We might need to look at Bill Clark or John Grass.

Stoops was an unproven coach when he left Florida (OC) for Okie. Same for Dabo, Meyer, and Riley. If not Stoops, then we need to keep our options open for a young and up & coming coach. The ones I mentioned I feel  100% certain that they could do an excellent job at Auburn. Check out their resume on Wikipedia.

Here is a link on Mike Norvell that is worth reading over. He is a young coach who will do great things wherever he might land.

The AD is not missing. He just can't do anything about Gus. Leath has the lone final decision on Gus given it's his responsibility from the insane contract he agreed to after last season.

Thank you................... Allen's hands are tied

It’s pretty irrational how much I dislike Leath and Gus right now. I wonder if there has ever been a university president and head football coach so inextricably tied together that had a lower level of support from the alumni, fan base, etc.? And I mean anywhere. Auburn has had some clusterf*** moments throughout my life but this is rarefied air Leath is taking us to. This will likely result in a nasty letter to the president’s office from me....for whatever that’s worth, lol

Georgia Tech taking Gus for us would be one of the nicest things a “rival” has ever done for us.

I have a very serious question: If this happened would the hatred from @augolf1716 for Tech be less? Inquiring minds want to know....

I will flippin burn down the entire campus before I let Urban Meyer become a coach at Auburn. He is the scum of the Earth. I’d rather let Pat Dye run the damn wing-t and only recruit 2 star players.

I like the rest of your list but I’ll say we don’t have a snowball’s chance in hell at getting Lincoln Riley.

I actually disagree, regardless of coach. I believe big-time in the pendulum theory for college sports. You get a bunch of 18-22 year olds and they're either very hungry or very complacent. You see it on a week to week basis and with Auburn you see it year to year.

I am not saying that to support Gus. I want him gone. I want someone who doesn't depend on the pendulum and can actually avoid it swinging backward. But it's a real thing. I think we win 9 (counting bowl).

I still suffer Barfield flashbacks from time to time. Been having them for the last couple of days when thinking about next year with Gus still the HC. :-\

Oh OK, all makes perfect sense now. Give me a freaking break! If the AD is not allowed to have any input in this situation, he needs to resign!

So he is completely powerless here, but he had all the power in the Bruce Pearl situation? And then suddenly when there is a new coaching search he’s going to have all power? What a freaking joke!

First point, this is actually happening. It is not somebody’s imagination or a hack. If Gus stays I’m sure the admin will play it down like it never happened. Way to many folks close to the center of AU sports have way to many different informants deep inside the athletic department and all have the same story. Now I’m sure that all parties want to save face so little official information will come out. Later more from those inside will filter out. But hey I’m watching AU basketball throwing down on another opponent so I really don’t care about football at the present . 😎

There is a new PM commentary on 247. Anybody have access, care to summarize it?

He was basically saying the AU money people and the administration have a couple decisions to make. They either need to fire Gus and hire a new coach, or support him with everything they have. Because right now, they’re kind of right in the middle, and it’s only going to hurt recruiting and the future of Auburn. He said Texas A&M, Florida and others are on their way up...he said LSU, Georgia and Alabama are already up. He said it’s going to be tough enough for Auburn to compete with them, so they need to decide are they keeping Gus and supporting him 100% to include facility upgrades etc... Or fire him and look for someone else they think can compete with the rest of the SEC!

I personally think Gus is Harbert’s guy and Leath is Harbert’s guy. Leath does not seem to be care or know  much about athletics no more than Dr Gougue was.....but one thing I believe Leath feels that if they (the can Gus PTB) want him out of that contract then they will have to pay it and not Auburn University.

Every one keeps worrying about recruits, what does it matter if we get a 2 star or 5 star recruit if Gus is still here? He doesn't know how to coach either one. I'm sure we will be able to get enough kids to sign to fill the roster.

Why are you so determined to make Greene the responsible party here? If the president takes charge of a situation what the hell is he supposed to do?

Just a couple of questions.

So Gus is going to sign a negotiated buyout for less money when at the beginning of this he was going to go to Arkansas if Auburn didn't pay him more money?  Is that right?  Sexton got his money up front anyway right?  Why would he care?

How does the University system work?  I thought the BOT hired/fired presidents, and presidents hired/fired AD's, and AD's hired/fired coaches?  Am I missing something here?

Stoops is a good coach, but he earned the Big Game Bob moniker.  Not that disappointed it fell through.  History of heart disease anyway.

Because Gus and this staff coaching a bunch of 1 and 2 star guys is going to be the worst thing you've ever seen. His pool of talent has somewhat compensated for his terrible coaching ability enough to at least keep us from being in hell.
