ToomersStreet 795
AUBURN How Auburn boosters are reportedly undermining Gus Malzahn's attempts to hire top assistants Adam Spencer | 1 hour ago SHARE TWEET The Auburn football program is a bit of a mess at the moment. After going 7-5 during the regular season, the Tigers are off to the Music City Bowl — a big disappointment after high preseason expectations. Making matters worse is all the turmoil around coach Gus Malzahn, who many in the fanbase — boosters included — want fired. On Wednesday, Alabama reporter Josh Moon, who mostly covers politics but interacts with some big boosters on his beat, tweeted about some strong new restrictions on Malzahn. As you can see below, Moon is reporting that Auburn isn’t letting Malzahn offer deals to assistants that are longer than one year. Moon says that’s hindering Malzahn from hiring Hugh Freeze as his offensive coordinator: This is the situation at Auburn now: top donors and university officials are so unhappy with the head football coach that they are seeking to undercut him by limiting assistants' contracts to single year deals. This is currently preventing AU from hiring Hugh Freeze as OC. /1 — Josh Moon (@Josh_Moon) December 5, 2018 Freeze is reportedly seeking a multi-year deal from future employers. Sources said Malzahn has asked AU to wave the recent restriction on multi-year contracts in order to hire Freeze. AU response: Nah. /2 — Josh Moon (@Josh_Moon) December 5, 2018 To be clear, I have no source that can say AU is Freeze's top choice. Only that Malzahn, in putting together an offer for Freeze, asked for the waiver. There seems to be better ways to run a football program. /F — Josh Moon (@Josh_Moon) December 5, 2018 If this is indeed the situation, it’s worth wondering why Auburn didn’t just bite the bullet and fire Malzahn after the regular season. This seems to be hindering the program, so we’ll see what develops over the coming weeks
PUB78 1,338
Auburn is ranked #4 in the nation for Assistant Coaches pay. Bought a 7-7 record since last years Iron Bowl.
doverstutts 1,643
i don't aprove of this, and stevie wonder can see that this is an attempt for the money bags to save face by making him leave on his own....this is wrong....i want him gone, but i want an honorable parting of the ways...malzahn is a poor football coach, but he is not a criminal and he did nothing wrong...the money bags are ones that screwed up
AUsome Jete 12
Ridiculous! You either love Auburn or you don't! These power brokers are so power hungry, they can't see past their own ego's and put the well being of our football program and players before themselves! Give CGM the opportunity to secure CHF as OC and see what he can do. If Gus continues being Gus during play calling then he will hang himself. It wouldn't hurt to have CHF in waiting for HC job either.
auburnphan 6,050
I believe they only want to limit all contracts to one year deals. I honestly can not blame them for that.
Auburn Kev 1,653
The money people and officials at Auburn University need to stop this passive-aggressive crap. Either fire Malzahn or give him the resources necessary to hire the people whom he thinks can make the program successful. At the end of the day they're going to be as responsible as Malzahn for the decline in the football program.

Mike4AU 1,735
If this is true, it is chickens@#t, but knowing some of the players involved it is not surprising. Gus, the tea leaves are crystal clear. Tell ole Jimmy to put on a full-court press to find you another job.

theweegler 81
I would say it couldn’t get any worse..... but we all know it can. This is absolutely stupid. Fire the man if you’re gonna handcuff him like this Nothing confirms Lame Duck status like 1 year contracts. Why would any reputable coach agree to one year? Why would any recruits be okay with this? This passive aggressive approach to handling Gus has gone from being deflating to us as fans to the potential dismantlement of recruiting classes, loss of hiring opportunities...LOSSES PERIOD! If the "big dogs" want him gone, they should have ponied up, but they couldn't handle the sting. Gutless. Now they're undermining and sabotaging the entire program to save face. I can't stand Gus, but they have their collective boot on the program's throat and they don't even realize it.

If this Josh Moon report is accurate (why would it be?) you can bet your @$$ they realize it. From what I've seen written, Harbart was so cocksure that CGM was the man at the time of the extension that he "guaranteed" the buyout personally. As a smart man said, money talks and BS walks. It appears there is a LOT of both going on at Auburn right now. EFFING JABA!!
PoetTiger 1,896
Lol..even if this is true. Auburn has to be stupid. They want him gone but don’t want to fire him. Wth is going on at my dear alma mater. If the money is there as many have said, pay him and move on. This little fiasco is gonna set Auburn back 10 years or more. Who in the hell would want to coach here? Especially if these allegations are true.

gravejd 3,263
I personally don't buy into this idea that boosters are trying to undercut Malzahn. It may be true that they are limiting contract lengths due to recent past mistakes and because they don't think it would be good financially for AU's future. But trying to spin it that they are doing it to undercut Malzahn? Not buying that......these boosters want to see AU do well. I bet if you asked each one of them how many games do you WANT AU to win next year, the answer would be "all of them." And that answer doesn't change with the coach. Howdy Skip, I was at AU CADC from 2001-2002. Ended up finishing in something else somewhere else. Did you have Bob Faust 2nd year? haha

Well JGT said we were trying to make him uncomfortable, so that he would leave. But if he’s here to stay one more year, they need stop with this bs.
