This will be an unpopular opinion

Comparing the Cam Newton situation to a head coach protecting an assistant that beat his wife are two different levels...

No question. I don’t know enough about that situation to have a comeback here. All I am saying is that AU has had issues also. Armed robbery, punch happy duke etc..

There’s always s fine line when it comes to morals and integrity in college football. If Urban Meyer would have been the one beating his wife, then I would agree with you.

My belief is that tOSU screwed him because he DID report his findings to the higher ups and THEY covered it up. Why else would Gene Smith have deleted all those text messages. And why is Urban Meyer getting blamed when Courtney Smith never once filed charges or had her husband arrested. It’s hard for me to ever feel sorry for a woman that continues to go back to that abuse.

If we find out that Urban went to the police and covered it up, then I would change my story. And I mean hard evidence, not just the words of Courtney Smith.

i believe Auburn has more morals and integrity than tOSU and that’s why I believe that he could potentially be more successful here from a “state of the program” standpoint. Especially since Auburn would be fully aware of the circumstances if they were to ever offer him the job.

You're confused about major points of the case. URBAN deleted the texts. The day before investigators dug in, he was apparently asking everyone on staff "Hey, how do you delete texts." I believe he reset his phone to factory standard mysteriously the day before they got to his phone. Urban also lied about knowledge of the situation. He said he never knew anything about it, yet there's a ton of evidence that says he and his wife had known for a long time.

Bad idea.  That stain left by meyer won't go away.  Opponents will use urban past history as a recruiting tool against us and then last of all auburn will be considered the last refuge of problem coaches and in the future that is all that we could get.

Yes, I remember those facts but it also came out that Gene Smith turned over a phone with zero text messages as well. Why would the AD delete his text messages? If it had only came out that Meyer had deleted his text messages, then I can certainly believe the narrative of Urban covering it up. But I believe he reported what he knew and later became the fall guy for it when no repercussions to Gene Smith or anyone else.

I believe he made a deal to coach through the season without being fired, and simply “retire” at the end of the year.

Well CameronCrazy you got one thing right; it is an unpopular opinion.  I would rather have a coach of good character who doesn't win them all than a coach who is a slime bag and wins them all.  I would not take Saban.   Not on a silver platter.  The way you win is just as important as winning to me.

As a friend since you and I have always gotten along on this forum with zero issues, you might want to stop defending your posts here.  You clearly have not had a family member or friend go through an abusive relationship.  Sometimes the woman is held hostage with the guy threatening to go after her kids or family if she ever speaks up.  That it literally takes someone to drive from Atlanta to Orlando to escort the girl to her apartment to make sure she safely retrieves her belongings.  Please don't dismiss a situation where a guy literally leaves a woman with a black eye because he can coach football.

In regards to your post, it was found Urban lied to the press about his involvement.  Regarding the texts, Gene Smith was telling Urban how to delete old texts to cover up what was said.

Fair enough.  My only rebuttal is when those things happened, they were immediately dealt with.  Gus does not tolerate those sorts of things.  The only person who received multiple chances was Duke.  Nothing was covered up.

Choke job?! He’s 2-1 against Saban, won 3 national titles, and he won 90% of his games at OSU. I would walk to Columbus from Birmingham just to get that guy to sign a contract.

2-2 and quit when Saban kicked his ass in recruiting and on the field.  Paying attention is important in life sir.

Have you been paying attention to the Coach Smith stuff? Free Tat stuff? Didn’t he push out negative academics stuff about Cam? Auburn is Lilly white as far as getting caught. Urban is a sleaze compared to Gus, but I’d still want him.

Nah Mate.  I don't pay attention to anything...

Like Auburn Softball issues...

Most of tbe Auburn softballers couldn’t help but to defend tbe old man. What a bunch of hooplah.

We have documentation of Smith’s wife saying Urban wouldn’t do anything though...

Hey, that's not what was insinuated.

Trust me, women's sports at Auburn took a nice perception hit Internationally because of the whole mess.

Penn State, Mich St, Ohio St don't have the market cornered...

Urban never ran away from Saban. That is ridiculous. However, he has probably had enough politics in his last two gigs to last a lifetime, and coming to Auburn isn't a step forward in that regard. Out of the frying pan into the fire.

Last time I checked it was Urban who kicked Sabans ass...on the way to a national title. I think Zeke still running to this day. He might have had another if they were not under sanctions from the Tressel era. The man can flat out coach and I’m tired of this myth he is afraid of Saban.

Well...he did fake a heart attack or drug addiction or whatever it was to get away so whatever you want to call it.

Or maybe he just wanted to go home to Ohio. Who knows but the man ain’t afraid to compete against Saban a coach he has beaten at the highest level of competition.

Tired of this holier-than-thou attitude a lot of our fans have. If we somehow could convince him to come here, we should take him.

He's not going to, but yeah.

Cesspool?  Auburn is the loveliest little strip mall on the plains.

You should probably maybe just get over the fact that I'll refer to the football program and fans as whatever I choose and makes you no better fan than me.

War Eagle Anyway.

Nah. It does. The way you respect and support your school is sort've the entirety of being a fan.

So you’re happy losing to Smart & Saban by double digits every year as long as we have a coach that wins the right way? That attitude is why Auburn will always be 8-5. We would rather save our dignity than potentially hire one of the greatest coaches in college football history. It absolutely blows my mind!

In 50 years, no one will ever remember how Auburn won 8 games every year the right way. They will remember how many National Championships we won.

It blows my mind that people think you can't hire a man of character who can ALSO win. Google John Wooden. Personally, I think Dabo is a high character guy too. I think he cares about his kids and is a good representative of his school.

Boy, howdy.  You might want to get off the farm and see the world at some point.  Experience life.  Witness perfection.

Then come back and demand that same damned perfection from a program that has hemorrhaged money on one piss poor decision after another.

War Eagle Anyway.

You can question all the shady stuff that went down at Ohio State and how he handled it. I get that and it is perfectly reasonable to do so. Not to mention all of the arrests under his watch at florida. But lets not try and act like he is not one of the best 3 coaches all time. Dude is a proven winner. He has won everywhere he has been at a very high level. He did not have to "learn" how to become a great coach like saban did. He did not have any of the lean years at any of his stops like Saban did at michigan state and early in his LSU tenure. The guy is 189-32 overall. He is a freak of nature when it comes to being a coach. GTFO with all of those he ran from saban crap. Dude beat him the last time he saw him with his third string QB. There is a lot of revisionist history in this thread. But he is a elite coach. His winning % all time we will never see anything like it again in major college football. He is 85-9 at Ohio State and he took over there the year before Gus. I wish we had a coach like that to take us on that kind of run.

If his health issues are legit and he really, really, really left THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY, where he just beat Michigan for the umpteenth time in a row (convincingly) and won the Big 20 Championship, due to a serious, non-reversible brain tumor, and already has a ticking time bomb for a heart, then WTH would anyone even think he'd be available to come to Auburn, much less want to take a job THAT HE JUST QUIT (from a school that is held in MUCH higher national regard than our beloved AU) that apparently he feels will kill him?

If you don't believe that he ran from Saban nor is running from this current situation, then have some compassion for him and let him retire in peace for his health's sake.  If he WERE to come to Auburn within the next 2 years then he's proving the "naysayers" in this discussion correct.

Can't have it both ways...
