Owen Pappoe dishes on Bo Nix, AU recruiting and more

ORLANDO, FLORIDA -- One week after signing with the Auburn Tigers, 5-star linebacker recruit Owen Pappoe of Grayson (Ga.) is here in Florida to take part in his final high school event before he arrives in Auburn next week to begin college. He's competing in the Under Armour All-America Game along with multiple Auburn signees, one prized Tigers commit (George Pickens) and a few big targets. "It's really exciting because we're about to be playing together for the next four years," Pappoe said. "This is like a taste of what I'm going to get from them." In this video interview with Auburn Undercover, Pappoe, the highest-ranked member of the Auburn signee list, talks about Tigers quarterback recruit Bo Nix (who he saw play earlier this month), how close he was to flipping to Tennessee and what he thought of Auburn's 63-14 win Friday in the Music City Bowl in Nashville, Tenn. The Under Armour All-America Game is Thursday at 5 p.m. CT on ESPN2. We'll have coverage throughout the week from practices.

2. George Pickens

Pickens entered the week No. 3 at wide receiver, but he may be No. 1 before all is said and done. He had made his case this week. He is such a smooth receiver who glides all over the field. He has consistently created separation this week and made plays over the top. The passes that have been thrown his way have not always been sharp, so seeing him adjust to the ball was another thing that stood out.

5. Charles Moore

Entering the week, Moore was not one of the defensive linemen being talked about in the elite group. He told Rivals that he came into this event with a “big chip” on his shoulder, and on the practice field, he has been one of the best. He has been tough to slow down with his quickness off the ball. He is a defensive lineman who can work inside and outside with his frame and ability.

Without pads on - and sometimes a very quick whistle - it is hard to get a good look at linemen, but Mississippi State commit Charles Moore
shined when his number was called. He was quick off the ball and tough for offensive linemen to control. It was easy to see why schools like Auburn, Florida, Ole Miss and Tennessee continue to pursue him.
 
Georgia Pickens
was unstoppable during the one-on-one drills. The Auburn commit's height and length made it very tough for defensive backs to lock him up, and his explosiveness made it nearly impossible to keep the ball out of his hands. Pickens has always played with an aggressive attitude and that created some eye-popping plays. On one play he caught the ball after pulling away from the defensive back on a double move. The defensive back tried to grab him from behind and Pickens shrugged him off and he went flying into the barrier well out of bounds.

On day two, defensive lineman Charles Moore was once again a standout on Team Flash. He used his quickness again to beat numerous offensive linemen when the pads were on. Moore is an intriguing prospect because he is likely a strongside end who could slide inside to be a quick three-technique in long yardage situations. The Mississippi State commit continued to shine on day two.

Bo Nix was just Bo Nix. He has really separated himself from the other quarterbacks after three days of practice. He just has command out there with teammates he has only been working with for three days. He was on time much of Wednesday, he threw some beautiful deep balls and most observers on the sideline were talking about the Auburn signee making an impact on the Plains next fall by the end of the day.

Jashawn Sheffield has shown ‘everybody what I can do’

8353673.jpgLAKE BUENA VISTA, Florida — After playing against small-school competetion in high school, Auburn 4-star receiver signee Jashawn Sheffield of St. Simons Island (Ga.) Frederica Academy wanted to prove he belonged with the big boys during Under Armour All-America Game week here in Florida. Thus far, he seems to have done just that. During the event’s four practices, Sheffield has shown good athleticism, the ability to get open and, for the most part, a pair of reliable hands. On one down-field pass play Wednesday, the 6-feet-1, 178-pound Sheffield made a diving one-handed grab that had everyone talking. The pass was thrown to him by another Auburn signee, quarterback Bo Nix. “I’ve performed well,” Sheffield said. “I think I came out here and showed everybody what I can do, even though I'm coming from a little, small private school. Hey, I came out here and made some real good plays, learned a lot of things, fixed a lot of things since I’ve been here. I like these coaches. I think they know what they’re talking about. I think I did well.” Sheffield and Nix are on the same team and to say the least Sheffield has been impressed with the Tigers’ early enrollee. “Bo Nix is going to teach me things when I get to Auburn I feel,” Sheffield said. “He’s been teaching me plays here.” Above, here’s our video interview with Sheffield. Man, all this has me excited for the future! Auburn could be GREAT on offense again if we shore up our o-line.

Also - I'm still peeved at all this recruiting nonsense based on size alone. Deshaun Davis played more like a 5 star than most 5 stars did. Size helps but not enough for me to say that OP is 4 stars versus 5 just because he didn't grow a little more. If the extra weight/inches slows him down and hinders his ability then I'd rather him stay where he's at.

Obviously, Auburn will beef him up a bit and condition him to play at that size, but his natural ability should outweigh (pun possibly intended) any negatives regarding his size.

AU had the pieces to be great this year had they shored up the OL. Unfortunately they way AU continues to struggle with recruiting the position, its not getting shored up.

Nix goes 0-2 on the first drive. The second pass attempt should have been picked off by Owen Pappoe but was dropped.

He’s been a stud. Nix has a couple of good plays but this Daniels kid has been electric. ASU got a good one.
