If he's right, hiring the best on-field coach is a good decision. You have to pursue titles aggressively when they're possibly on the table. Bama, Oklahoma (mostly because the Big 12 sorta blows) and maybe Clemson are the only teams in country that are actual conference title contenders every season. Every other team, including Ohio State, builds to championship runs, and they have to cash in when it's on the table. We had a shot last year and whiffed at the end. If Gus thinks we have a real shot next season (likely based on Stidham and the DL we have returning), I can't blame him for going to grab the best on-field guy he can find to shore up the OL's on-field performance. That decision could trickle down to mean you have a hole in OL recruiting a few years down the road, but you won't notice it that impact in 2018 or 2019. While I get where you are, as I pointed out in another thread, it seems like Gus has been focusing on hiring specialists for the past couple of years. Porter is a recruiting specialist, one the field remains to be seen. Brown is an on the field specialists and is said to be lacking in recruiting. Same goes for Grimes. Woodson remains to be seen on the field, but we've heard he rocks it on the recruiting trail. It's almost like he doesn't feel there are enough coaches that excel in both areas, like Garner and T-Will, so he's going for the best he can get in one or the other. Couple that with 2 of the starters and 3 of the backups- with at least one having an outside shot at becoming a starter- being Grimes's recruits, and it makes sense. We have a defense. We have a QB. We have receivers. We might have an O line. Very little coaching turnover. We gotta give it a shot this season.

Yet we struggled with OL recruits and all indications are that we need several OL next year and we only have 16 offers out. How are we not on more OL? Worst part is I don't think we lead for any of the 4 or 5 star guys. Got our work cut out for us. Grimes is going to need some help. Pushing for Nix's commit may be part of that help.

Yeah I will say it's concerning how hard other teams have hit the recruiting trail and we still seem to be getting into gear. Maybe it's just perception but it would be nice to see us keep pace with UGA in this 2019 class.

Zeek 16,525
https://www.seccountry.com/auburn/auburn-recruiting-alabama-commit-brandon-turnage Quote On Feb. 10, 2017 — yes, a full year ago — Turnage messaged back and forth with me asking the smart questions about the recruiting process. What are the best ways to get noticed? How do you go about visits? And the important one for the purposes of this conversation: What would it take to receive an Auburn offer? After all, it was his “dream school,” he said at the time. Quote Auburn has made it clear it wants Turnage. During the contact period, Woodson stopped by his high school three times — once per week — which sends a clear signal. “It means they actually want me to come play for them. They’re giving me an opportunity to make an impact,” Turnage said. Turnage plans to return for another Auburn visit in the spring, he said. Zeek 16,525
https://www.seccountry.com/auburn/auburn-recruiting-cortez-andrews-safety-visit Quote Here’s how Andrews describes his initial Auburn interest. “Just the fact that, growing up, I was a big fan of the SEC. Auburn was one of the heavyweights. That’s one of the big schools I grew up watching. Just coming up to see it for the first time was amazing,” Andrews said. “This is my first time coming up here, and I really enjoyed it, the coaches and the whole environment. So I’ll definitely be back up here.” Auburn offered Andrews before he began his sophomore season. It goes on to talk about Jalyn Phillips whos is virtually begging for an offer and is a 4* secondary player...let's get that offer out and start building this class gosh darnit!

Essentially says we have Bo Nix committed and we might take a local 3* QB if JS bails before his senior year. Which I didn't think JS would before this year's draft prospects at QB started to pan out. Not a lot of stellar college QBs at the moment. Zeek 16,525
https://www.seccountry.com/auburn/auburn-recruiting-jaylen-mccollough-visit Big visitor today! Jaylen McCollough is a 5* Safety from Powder Springs, GA standing at 6'1" 200 lbs. Quote two dozen programs to have offered McCollough. That lengthy list of blue bloods says it all. Auburn added its name to the mix on Dec. 7 and will take its involvement a step further Wednesday... ... Quote With Auburn basketball hosting a game Wednesday (against rival Alabama), McCollough likely will stay for that, as most unofficial visitors have this spring when given a similar opportunity. This specific game is interesting timing for McCollough’s visit, too. Auburn will be recognized at halftime with the Iron Bowl trophy for its 26-14 win over Alabama in football. Coincidentally, that game was the last time McCollough visited Auburn. That timing seems strategic on the Tigers’ part as they gear up for a recruiting battle with many of the nation’s elite programs, including Alabama. ... Quote The 247Sports Crystal Ball projections cast 58 percent of the 12 predictions in favor of Alabama, which helps us understand why Auburn may be trying to use the 2017 Iron Bowl outcome to its advantage. McCollough released a top 7 on Jan. 20. It included Auburn, Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina and Ohio State. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound safety from Powder Springs, Ga., already has visited South Carolina and Tennessee during the spring. Zeek 16,525
Also on the move for Texas 4* CB Erick Young Quote Auburn continues to take steps toward establishing a Texas pipeline. That’s something the Tigers coaching staff hoped would happen with the addition of tight ends coach Larry Porter last year. With one recruiting cycle under his belt, Auburn’s name is popping up more and more on the “top schools” lists for Class of 2019 Texas targets. The latest: 4-star cornerback Erick Young. Young is a 6-foot-1, 195-pound cornerback from Richmond, Texas. He picked up his offer from the Tigers last week, so his interest level in the Tigers is fresh. When Young released his top 10, he added a note about his future “top schools” lists. He will announce his top 5 in “40 days,” he said, so there is a timeline the Texas cornerback is operating on. Southern California, Texas A&M, Georgia, Oregon, Alabama, Texas, Ohio State, Oklahoma and LSU are the other programs in his top 10. That’s a national list, so it won’t be easy for Young to visit most of these schools in the next month and a half before he starts narrowing his list down. As a result, the relationships Young has with coaches on staff will drive this recruitment for now. With such a short time table we need to try to be one of the teams he actually visits! I'm sure @bigbird will be happy that we're looking for a Texas pipeline!
