Gus Malzahn is looking for a new right-hand man.

Patrick Suddes, the top man on Auburn’s support staff, has left to take a similar position on Geoff Collins' staff at Georgia Tech, a person familiar with the decision tells Auburn Undercover. Suddes and Collins worked together at Alabama in 2007.

Suddes had been with Auburn since 2016 and served as the assistant athletics director for football handling office work and overseeing the Tigers’ recruiting department. He also managed the roster.

Malzahn said in December he would delegate more of his inner-office duties as a head coach to others on the staff, with Suddes handling most of the duties as Malzahn focused more on play-calling and coaching on the field.

“Pat Suddes is the one that is really my right hand guy,” Malzahn said on Dec. 19. “Me and (athletics director) Allen (Greene) have a great relationship. I’m really looking forward to next season.”

Malzahn took over play-calling on offense in the Music City Bowl. The Tigers defeated Purdue 63-14.

Suddes was Arizona State’s assistant athletics director for recruiting during 2014-15. He served as director of player personnel at Texas under Mack Brownduring the 2013 season and spent six seasons before that at Alabama (2007-13) as associate director of football operations. His duties included organizing weekly recruiting meetings, developing monthly recruiting initiatives, coordinating and monitoring all recruiting events and day-to-day activities, overseeing summer camps and coaching clinics, and creating a marketing and strategic plan that included social media expansion and mobile app development.

Suddes spent two seasons under Nick Saban with the Miami Dolphins, including 2005 as a defensive assistant and 2006 as an offensive assistant, responsible for quality control, including breakdown and scouting reports of opponents, organizing game plans and self-scouting, in both positions.

Suddes graduated from Alabama in 2005 with a degree in business management. He began his career in 2004 as a recruiting intern at LSU where he assisted in day-to-day recruiting operations and quality control on offense and defense. Suddes is a graduate of Marist High School in Atlanta, Georgia. He is married to the former Rachel Notar from Pell City, Alabama.

Well that kind of sucks, if he was going to handle more of the day to day operation stuff.

Why is this a good move for Suddes?  All answers welcome...

When I read the article, the thing that stuck out to me was Suddes was in charge of roster management.  Was he the fall guy for the Asa situation?  Going to GT doesn’t seem to be a good move.

Because he grew up a Tech fan being from Atlanta, and this is the only way he could ever get there? :dunno:

1. Atlanta is fun.
2. Being Gus's right hand man sounds like a lot of fetching coffee and such. It doesn't sound like a lot of important decision making.
3. Does he have a kid at Tech?
4. To piss off @augolf1716.
5. Evidently he's a job hopper. Has already worked at Arizona State, Texas and Bama.
6. Further to #5, he wants his resume to look like a circle of the United States. After Tech he'll go to Virginia, then BC, then Penn State, Michigan...

Since Gus is calling his own plays, in a surprise move, he will also be both his own right and left hands.

Why does anyone leave a job?  There are many reasons.  Maybe he will be getting more money for less work?  Why does it matter?  As far as a replacement....well let's see what they post as a job req?  That will tell you the pay scale and some folks on this board might apply...

Dang.  No more pre-boom winks on Twitter.  We will miss you Suddes.

I think roster management in this case has more to do with recruiting and how many are needed at a given position and who or what is available in a given year.  Making sure you don’t get to 2021 with an uneven roster and have to scramble to shore up a key position.

Tech is calling him a GM.  It is a chance to take another step up the ladder and another step toward becoming an AD.

This will be a critical hire for Gus.  IMO, what Suddes came in to do was some of the things Muschamp was apparently critical of when he took the SC job.  Roster management and  organization with and around recruiting.

He will certainly be missed. Wish him nothing but the best. However anyone that knew anything about him knew he wouldn't be here forever. He changes jobs more than most change cars. We were just another brick in the wall for him.

Yep..….noticed that in his resume...expect he was renting.   Basically an administrator....and who knows whether we will miss him ?  Unless the team takes bus to Montgomery and finds that reservations were for the previous night that is. .

And his impact leaving will likely be what?
