The points regarding how an illiberal "democracy" can evolve into what is essentially a authoritarian state are right on.

This is what makes the shift in the supreme court so dangerous.  I bet most people who are rejoicing over these appointments are thinking of abortion when it's decisions like Citizen's United and Shelby they should be concerned with. 

It may take a major upheaval to get us back to a liberal democracy - something along the lines of another Civil War or Great Depression. Here's a book on current politics on this subject which  I highly recommend:
