Freeze wanted to come to AU

So freeze was dying to come to Auburn, and was blocked. WOWOWOWOWOW.

From al.com:

Former embattled Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze “dreamed” of coaching at Auburn, according to an interview he gave to 3HL on 104.5 FM in Nashville on Wednesday.

The new Liberty head coach, who resigned from Ole Miss in 2016 due to recruiting violations and illicit correspondences with an escort service, was a candidate for Auburn’s offensive coordinator opening this fall.

“I’d be lying if I was saying there wasn’t one that I really, really have always kind of thought about and dreamed about and all those things,” Freeze said. "But for whatever reason, at this time, some things don’t work out on other people’s ends.”

To be clear, as the Knoxville News Sentinel points out, the school he was most interested was Auburn, because of his relationship with head coach Gus Malzahn. His comments here about things not working out “on other people’s ends” feeds into a rumor that Malzahn might not have been given a go-ahead to hire Freeze.

“I’ve always talked with Gus about working with him,” Freeze said. “He’s been one of the most loyal friends through a difficult season in my life, and he just never wavered and just fought for me. I think he’s a heck of a football coach, too."

Freeze was named Liberty’s head coach on Dec. 7, 2018. He will take over a program that is in its infancy at the FBS level. They’re an independent, and finished this season 6-6, with one of those losses a 53-0 result at Auburn. The Flames are located in central Virginia.

“I don’t like the way the last one ended, obviously," Freeze told the radio station of his time at Ole Miss. “And, again, I’m not saying that to say that I did nothing wrong. What I’m saying is, you have to look at both sides of it, too. This issue was a personal issue. It had nothing to do with the way I was impacting kids, coaching kids. So I think there was enough people that saw and witnessed that.”

Freeze compiled a 39-25 record at Ole Miss. He coached for one season at Arkansas State, and when he left that job, Malzahn slid into it, also just for one season.

“Truthfully," Freeze said. "I really thought it would be coordinator first before being a head coach again and was fully anticipating doing that and was really kind of excited about it.

Wonder if Freeze is still married? :dunno: Hope he finds redemption at Liberty, but glad he is not at Auburn. Does anybody else feel like there needs to be a totally new crop of coaches? The ones now just seem like retreads. And Saban has opened a coaching rehab center over there in West Alabama.

Good ole al.com. Auburn has moved on and Freeze has moved on. The media hasn't moved on.

"What you're doing speaks loud, I can't hear what you're saying. " In his own words in the above article, he explained exactly why his dream of coaching at Auburn did not come true.  I might have given the benefit of the doubt had I not read his response to his dismissal circumstances. I wish him a genuine fresh start at Liberty. Perhaps this can be moved to Rivals?

Been saying that for a while when someone mentions a retread hc for a possible HC at auburn.  Saben, damnbo, lombardia, Carroll etc did not just go to being hc witout being assistants.  If a school is considering a new hc then it would definitely have to be willing to work harder, dig deeper, and do a lot more research to hire an assistant vs a current hc.

Freeze got a head coaching gig at a school where he can be successful and Gus gets to be the man in control.  Win Win

Does al.com own that Nashville radio station?

The question to ask is does the Nashville radio station own al.com. Why run the story of something that most everyone knew already.

I would love to have him here. I think he would have been given control or more control over the offense than Gus would ever relinquish. Would be like muschamp though two years at most. But moving on......

Yep, I think an offense put together by those two minds could have been hell on wheels.  Kind of like what I saw in Nashville the last Friday in December, so maybe nothing lost.

I, for one, am pulling for Freeze to have great success...particularly in using his experience to help young football players to become great men.

He screwed up. In ways I detest. But if anyone seems to have the personality to redeem it, it’s him.

I don’t know who shot it down and can’t really blame people on that side either. But he’s a good coach and I think he is really trying  to be a better man.

Both questions are rhetorical. No. And I didn't know. Rumors hold no weight until confirmed like this.

Thank goodness there was someone showing enough sense to nix that deal.  I wonder if it will ever happen again.

Yeah  remember all those deals saban wanted that were nixed by bama university bureaucrats?

Don’t mean to be a ass here but Freeze was not blocked. He took the Liberty job instead on the AU OC job.

If we have a new head for the 2020 season, Freeze might be our OC after all. By the way, I'm a Christian and I strongly believe in giving people a 2nd chance.

Saban pursued Freeze immediately after he was terminated by OleMiss - the SEC office nixed the notion altogether.  The SEC couldn't have a former HC on an SEC staff after he'd just left his previous SEC program on NCAA probation with a Lack of Institutional control tag on them and serving a 2 yr bowl ban.  Saban should've known better than to go after Freeze.
