Defensive end commit Daniel Foster-Allen finds family at Auburn

By Giana Han

As he sat at Auburn coach Gus Malzahn’s pond, Daniel Foster-Allen got to know his future Auburn teammates, J.J. Evans and Wesley Steiner while they fished.

Foster-Allen, a three-star defensive end out of Mobile, had his official visit to Auburn December 6, and he got to learn more about the program he was joining and the class coming in with him.

Early on, Foster-Allen knew that Auburn was the place for him. He committed in February 2019 while he was a junior in high school. He and his family took one official visit — this one.

“Had a fun weekend, you know,” Daniel Foster-Allen said. “Got to really see the campus and actually what Auburn really is about — and it’s just family.”

The Foster-Allens have been to Auburn before on “unofficial” visits, but after this one Dana Foster-Allen, Daniel’s mother, said she felt completely comfortable leaving her son here.

“It really exceeded my expectations,” Dana Foster-Allen said. “They really seem to care about the whole person, not just the athlete but them developing into a good man, father, citizen. So that was very impressive.”

While Dana Foster-Allen exchanged recruiting stories with the parents of the other commits and recruits, Daniel Foster-Allen got to know future Tigers four-star receiver Evans, four-star linebacker Steiner and three-star offensive guard Jeremiah Wright. He also hung out with Kameron Brown, a freshman linebacker and Derrick Brown’s little brother, and Caleb Johnson, a redshirt freshman defensive end.

“It was just fun times,” Daniel Foster-Allen said.

They also went over academics — Dana Foster-Allen is excited her son will be able to live his dream while also getting a degree — and met with the coaches. They told him he has the ability to play, but it’s really a matter of hitting the weight room and learning schemes.

Daniel Foster-Allen checked in at 6-foot-4 and 264 pounds over the weekend. That puts him at an inch above starting defensive end Marlon Davidson and 13 pounds below. He said the coaches told him he’ll probably play defensive end in a four-three defense, but if they switch to three-four, he’ll move to defensive tackle. Daniel Foster-Allen is one inch shorter and 49 pounds lighter than starting defensive tackle Derrick Brown.

Dana Foster-Allen said she’s read articles that say Daniel is one of the most under-rated of Auburn’s commits, especially because of his size. What a lot of people miss is that he’s still 17-years-old. When he arrives in the summer — he’s not going to enroll early — he’ll still be 17, and he won’t turn 18 until June 5. When he was 2-years-old, the doctors predicted that he’d be 6-foot-5 or 6-foot-6. Whether he reaches that or not, he’s definitely still growing, and defensive line coach Rodney Garner has shown that he knows how to develop players physically.

“I’m kind of interested to see how much weight he gains and how big he’s going to get,” Dana Foster-Allen said. “That kind of makes me nervous, a little bit. But I’m a mom, so I’m excited to see how he develops.”

Besides Garner’s workout regimen, Auburn’s food will also help contribute to his growth. Both of the Foster-Allens were impressed by the meals. For Daniel, that was the best part, which means he’ll probably fit in with a defensive line led by Derrick Brown who waxed poetic about Thanksgiving meals.

Daniel Foster-Allen received offers from five other schools, but he will officially be an Auburn Tiger on signing day December 18. He plans to make his announcement sometime in the morning.
