Purifoy needs to be go-to guy

Recommended Posts

Wiley has been a difference maker when he wasn't either injured or suspended. Sadly, there haven't been many such games over the past three years.

Purifoy now, he's been steadily getting back into being able to be a positive on the court but him being ready to be a "go to guy" appears to be some several games into the future. Pearl will play him when/if he's ready but clearly that time has yet to arrive.

We keep hoping but yesterday only 10 minutes ...surprised me when I saw the post game stats and saw SamirD played more than 30 minutes.. Not sure who substitutes for who these days....but thought DP would be seeing more minutes by now.

OK...that is fine...you ignore me and I will ignore you...

Thought you were responding to my comment on AW which was similar.

It doesn't even have to be ignore me. I'm thinking you play him limited minutes coming off of injury, I guess you're saying not to I don't remember but if that's the case I guess we don't agree but it's no big deal if we don't. It seems pretty civil imo. I'm trying to show you guys it's no big deal when we disagree.

Anybody on this forum feel free to disagree with me. I don't take it personal. You can even joke around with me as long as it's good nature. It's cool.

Imo everything should go through chumma. I know he's still learning to be aggressive but even if we went through him and let him facilitate it would cover up the weakness that a couple of our guards can't create good shots for themselves.

We shouldn't have ever wanted dp to play 4. I just don't see Pearl's logic with that decision at all. We had a big loss at 3 why not want him there?

Well what traits does Pearl like in his 4s? He likes them to have height, ball handling skills, and ability to score close to the basket and from 3. Purifoy and Okeke are the only 2 guys on our roster that bring these skills to the table. So i think that is why Pearl wants him to play at the 4. But i personally haven't seen much from Purifoy that he has the desire to bang around underneath and get rebounds which is required of the 4 spot. He is a jump shooter and pretty much a 3 ball specialist. His trips to the basket seem to be limited to transition opportunities. My guess is that he doesn't have a quick enough first step to take folks off the dribble but thats a complete guess cause i really don't know for sure why he doesn't try and drive more. Maybe he doesn't want to or maybe the coaches don't want him too....idk.

I don't see Purifoy currently as a go to guy on our team. I love that he is starting to contribute and is improving but he is far from "go to" imo. His shooting ability gives us some good scoring punch coming off our bench but i don't know that he brings enough in terms of defense and rebounding.

To sum up this thread I'm the only one that has an opinion that matters.  No one else matters only me.  There is a lot of money available to be made if you know everything about basketball.  Maybe some on here should try it.

DP only played 10 minutes which surprised me......with the frantic pace of the game, and our rebounding issues seems we could have used him more than that...but as noted, he was shooting 3s also and thus no help on rebounding.    If you dig into the stats, it's amazing to me that we were as close as we were.

DP may not be the go to guy yet nor ever but I agree he needs more than 10 mins. I believe he gives us way more than Samir does, just look at those two baskets he had driving to the goal. He’s a big boy but can finish better at the rim than Samir. Really hope BP plays him more and imo he should be starting or one of the first off the bench

you raise good points and guess I'm not sure what BP's thinking is on his rotation  AW's injury has probably screwed up the overall plan...….maybe for a while since he barely saw the floor yesterday and might not be ready.

Otherwise....it's hard for me to see a pattern for playing time.    JMO but if DP is going to just be another outside shooter, he does not add much except as someone to give the starters a short breather.   Looked good on the slashing drives but maybe no quick enough to make a living doing that.     :dunno:   Still seems like a "fit" issue?

Chuma has to do more heavy lifting on O. Purifoy needs to remain in a complementary role until next season IMO. The way he's starting to work his way back he can help us big time down the stretch this year but he's positioning himself for a big senior season if he stays at AU. And he should because it will be him and freshman Okoro as the only bodies equipped to play SF for us next season so the opportunities will be there.

Man i hope Chuma stays another season. I know he is getting some 1st round evals but i really think another year of college would do wonders for his ability to make an immediate impact in the NBA. If he stays he will be forced to take on a bigger role and i think being the man for a season at AU would really help his confidence at the next level.

Edit: Whoa, that was longer in wordier than I expected.

I actually think he's one of those guys that may be better suited to leave -- for his sake. I don't know if he has the quality in him to be aggressive on O, to be the lead dog on offense for a team. Some players just don't have that personality or game. Doesn't mean he's not good or physically can't (because he's shown in spurts he absolutely can) but it may just not be in his nature. Some players get exposed the longer they stay in college when they have to shoulder more responsibility. Players like James Michael McAdoo for UNC a while ago . He would've been lottery freshman pick as a 3rd or 4th option on UNC but as the years went by his stock kept going down, and ended up undrafted after junior year. Or Josh McRoberts at Duke. Would've been a lottery pick after a freshman year but stayed another season and when he couldn't lean on more experienced players and he fell all the way to the 2nd round after just 1 season. Dated references, I know but it holds true. Now, Chuma wasn't a McDonalds All-American type of prospect with lottery expectations, but I could potentially see this type of thing happening to him as he's starting to pop up on mock drafts. What happens when we need him to be the second scorer next to Harper next year? He hasn't even consistently shown to be aggressive enough to be the third guy yet. Not saying he can't but we just haven't seen it yet.

FWIW the latest mock here (https://www.nbadraft.net/2019mock_draft) has both Wiley and Chuma falling out of the first round. They're both early 2nd now.

All that being said, I love what Chuma does and IMO he has one more step to take to be a 2 way dominant force and that's be an aggressive scorer mixed in to how well he can move the ball. He's so good at finding our shooters from inside. He's a good and improving rebounder, he's a fantastic defender, so skilled with his handles and has the ability to go rim to rim on the break at 6'8! I would looooooooooove for him to stay for his junior year and prove my first paragraph in this post to be the wrongest I've ever been regarding him having the personality to be a lead dog on O.

After all, you don't need to show on tape all these qualities it's more about showing just enough film to the NBA guys for them to think they can mold you into something and he's certainly reached that point already, so I wouldn't count it out that he leaves. But I'd absolutely love to see his game flourish as a featured piece of AU's offense next year. Also, if he gets a 2nd round grade IMO he should come back because if he does in fact show offensive growth next season I don't know how he doesn't make it into the first round. He is a special talent. I'm just iffy on if he's even interested in becoming a true focal point on O which, I think everyone would agree is the missing piece in his game. Unfortunately for us, he probably doesn't need to find that piece at AU to still be considered an NBA caliber player.

I keep seeing people talk about hoping this or that player stays another season... I don’t know maybe you’re thinking transfer..... I’m hell and gone from a hoops scout but I ain’t seeing no NBA drafting from this team at all.

Chill out man.....sounds like you must have missed the game.   As for AW, I had no expectations at all.   He played 5 minutes in the UF game....I had no idea what his health situation was but BP chose to play him early and then again..... but of course BP did not leave him out there long after the last two quick fouls.   If he is still injured, that's regrettable....but it is up to him and BP about whether or how much he plays.   JMO but if he can't be effective, no point in putting him on the floor.

My point was that I heard no comment from anyone explaining his short stint in the game but the fouls were  not a reason to take him out.   If he was able to play and help, might as well let him stay in until he fouled out. ..

A player that can't defend without fouling is liability for the whole team. It can ruin good defensive possessions, it can undo good work by other guys, and cost a team points. You do sit players down for fouling even if they aren't at risk for fouling out.

DP has had issues defending his entire time at AU. He may can play the three on offense, but he has not shown the ability to pressure the ball or otherwise defend out away from the hoop. At this point he should be our back up 4, getting 10-12 minutes a game. Maybe play some 3 if the other team is playing big. I'm glad to see him showing signs of being able to produce, but right now he's the 7th man when Wiley is hurt and the 8th when he's healthy.

He shouldn't play 4 at all, I really don't want to hear defense because I see two players on this team that's good on D. This team's defense has been horrible. To say he literally shouldn't play an entire position is laughable but he's playing 3

This year?

If you're running a pro team why not? He's literally a perfect guy to pick. He'll be late first round so a good team is picking him. Don't have to rush him, get him under guys who know how to win. You're not drafting him thinking he's going to carry a team. It would be for defense. He's young and super athletic.

Who develops him better you or somebody else? Also I don't think many understand how important and special a guy who can guard 3 positions is.....especially how the game is played now. It's nothing to sneeze at

Makes me moist seeing DP set a good pick for Bryce from the corner 3, which is followed by Bryce looking for his shot instead of the immediate bounce pass before the obvious trap comes

I loved some of the inside action against the zone they ran for Chuma; other than Okeke just being naturally sleeker and faster than DP, I felt like they could give him some similar looks
