Interesting Transfer Portal Article

Not a fan of al.com, but good questions are brought up.  In particular Bru McCoyto transferring right after signing.

The NCAA transfer portal is changing the college football landscape.

Whether it is for the better or worse really depends on your perspective.

Just today, Auburn’s Calvin Ashley has entered the portal.

It is certainly easier for a student-athlete to now transfer to a different college football program. But, has the portal now become a form of free agency?

ESPN did an in-depth feature on the transfer portal. In it, a number of high-profile coaches voiced concern over the portal and what it means for college football.

“We have seen kids that have entered the transfer portal and haven’t been on campus for a semester,” Penn State coach James Franklin told ESPN. “How do you learn to overcome adversity and fight through battles and learn to compete? I worry about that for our sport; I worry about that for kids and our country. The path of least resistance very rarely is the answer. How do you have discipline and structure and tough conversations in your program if there’s always a Plan B, an outlet with no real repercussions?”

Last month, five-star 2019 recruit Bru McCoyto signed as an early enrollee at USC only to change his mind and enter the portal less than a month after being on campus.

Of course, every case is different, right?

Does former Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts fit that mold? The short answer is no. Hurts, who was 26-2 as a starter for Nick Saban, lost his job to Tua Tagovailoa, then backed him up for a year before deciding to enter the portal and transfer to Oklahoma.

Still, some coaches believe the portal should be used for more extreme cases.

“In how many households are the teenagers making decisions?” TCU coach Gary Patterson said. "Why are we sitting here saying they need more leverage? This waiver thing, we’ve got to help people that truly have a problem, (like) their family is sick. It can’t be just because you don’t like somebody or somebody said something to you. We all have to live in a world that’s like that.”

In fact, so many athletes are coming and going, Stanford’s David Shaw indicated it is difficult to keep track.

“It’s really messy right now,” Shaw said. “The rules are not really hard rules. The positions that these young people get put in are really, really difficult. It’s become difficult for coaches to manage their rosters.”

They're college students first, right? Can't all college students transfer more-or-less at will? Let the kids go where they want.

You can say that, and apparently that's what is happening. Just understand that this has opened Pandora's box. The game will be way different from what we have known in prior years. I once stood on the sideline at an AU practice and heard a coach yell at a player "The best part of you ran down your mother's leg". The guy stayed at AU and after his college time was over he got drafted by an NFL team. How many guys are going to put up with that under today's "portal" situation?

I agree with you to a point.  The rules should be more equitable for the student athlete.  However, they are free to do whatever they want ... all they have to do is not accept the scholarship money.  Football is an extracurricular, not a requirement or a right.

on the flip side, the ncaa should make it harder for coaches.  How about apply the 1 year sit out rule to coaches.  That’d be fun to watch.
