Didn't say KF was All-American or All-Sec but he was a good player. Y'all seem to forget that awful shoulder injury in 2012(?). Was on the Butkus list for his Jr and Sr seasons. All SEC third team his Sr year. Again, not too shabby.

I cant talk down about any defender we had individually from 2010 to 2012. If any of those guys ended up being good, it was a pure miracle and because of their own natural talent

Trenton made The 2019 Opening Finals Dream Team

Quote

LB: Trenton Simpson (52 in the 247Sports Composite)

When Simpson walks in the door, he’s already a leg up on most other linebackers based on frame at 6-2.5, 224 pounds. He also checks the athleticism box with a 4.67 40, a 4.15 shuttle and a 34.5 inch vertical. In 7on7 he also showed the ability to run downfield and carry vertical routes with ease and even make a play on the football as a finisher

The Opening Final Cut — LB Trenton Simpson

By TOM LOY

FRISCO, Texas — 247Sports was on-site for The Opening Finals and there was a ton of footage shot from the event. Over the course of the next week, we are putting together a ton of video packages from the showcase to bring fans a look at what it was like inside The Star.

Today's highlight features Charlotte (N.C.) Mallard Creek four-star linebacker Trenton Simpson, one of the Top100 prospects in the class of 2020. The 6-2, 220-pounder is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 34 overall player in the country, No. 3 outside linebacker this cycle and No. 2 prospect in North Carolina. He's pegged as the No. 52 overall player in the nation, No. 4 recruit from his position this class and No. 2 target from his home state.

Simpson is currently committed to Auburn and has been locked in since June 14, 2019. He chose the Tigers over 20-plus scholarship offers including Florida, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and many others across the country.

As a junior, Simpson racked up 74 total tackles, 28 tackles for loss, eight sacks and six pass breakups on defense.

For his efforts in the Lone Star State at the elite prospect camp, Simpson was named to the 247Sports Dream Team.

"When Simpson walks in the door, he’s already a leg up on most other linebackers based on frame at 6-2.5, 224 pounds," wrote 247Sports National Director of Scouting Barton Simpson. "He also checks the athleticism box with a 4.67 40, a 4.15 shuttle and a 34.5 inch vertical. In 7on7 he also showed the ability to run downfield and carry vertical routes with ease and even make a play on the football as a finisher."

247Sports Scouting report via national analyst Charles Power (May 22, 2019)

"Has a high-cut build with wide shoulders and a developed lower body. Already well-put together heading into his senior season. Possesses very nice length with long arms. His ultimate size remains to be seen, but it’s not out of the question he could grow into an edge player at the next level. Highly athletic and tests well in a combine setting. Initially began his high school career as a running back before playing linebacker in addition to carrying the ball. Has a long stride and runs with explosion and fluidity on both sides of the ball. Excels as a blitzer off the edge. Uses his high-end first-step quickness to blow by offensive linemen off the snap and closes quickly. Has shown a desirable level of physicality both on the field and in camp settings, showing strong hands. Embraces contact on both sides of the ball. Fluidity and flexibility is evident in his forward lean and low pad level as a running back. Is battle-tested playing at a top level of competition for one of North Carolina’s top high school programs. Scheme versatile as a defender and could develop into a blue-chip pass rusher depending on how he fills out. Projects as a multi-year starter with the upside of developing into an all-American candidate and early round NFL Draft pick. "

Holy crap

He was close to a five-star for them already. He was #34 overall. He’s #14 overall now.

Wow.  A 5-star linebacker in each of the last two classes is very impressive.  Beating UGA for both guys is even better.

Analysis from 247Sports' John Garcia Jr.

In today's game, Trenton Simpson screams five-star prospect and has pretty much forced our hand over the last year or so. Regardless of experience at linebacker, his athletic profile at 6-foot-3, 220 pounds with elite athleticism both on the field and validated by testing is head-turning alone. Even as a running back it would be hard to ignore what he's done in a short period of time. The length and mass catch your attention before the effortless movement skill holds that attention.

But of course Simpson is a true linebacker in the projection game and the future couldn't look much brighter. The running back experience translates incredibly well with his instincts in the box, along with vision, leverage and explosion. But where he shines even more is in space, moving in any direction. Most defensive backs don't hold that type of range so to have it in what will be 230-plus pounds one day is pretty scary. Simpson could blossom into a true inside linebacker and captain an SEC defense or play throughout the second level and spend time as a part time cover guy, part time pass rusher and flex 'backer. Neither or a combination of any three-down role would, or should, surprise at this point.

Every time we've seen him work, whether in the fall, winning Alpha Dog honors at The Opening Charlotte or proving comfortable covering some of the nation's top wide receivers and/or tight ends at The Opening Finals, Simpson has been up to task and found a way to stand out at a position that usually takes a back seat during the non-padded portion of the offseason. He is simply a special athlete.
