Final 8-0.

Auburn pitchers issued 20 base on balls in the two losses.

Auburn hitters had 16 base hits in the two losses.

We've got to get better on both sides.

With one out in the seventh and down by 8 (eight) runs, Judd Ward drew a walk which moved Ryan Bliss to second.  On a pitch to Kason Howell which was well into the left hand batter's box the Arkansas catcher caught Ward way off the bag at first and back picked him for the second out.  Again, we were down eight and Ward was the trailing runner.  If I was Butch Thompson, I'd sit his ass for a week at least.  I think Judd Ward is a really good player, but this team needs to wake up and realize that nothing is going to be given to them in this league.  We are two starters away from being really good, but we're also two starters away from being very mediocre.  Time for Holland and Williams to come out of the funk and start doing what everybody knows they can do. The play at the plate that was overturned and cost us the win shouldn't have been as close.  Williams rounded the bag at third so poorly and nearly fell down.  He's too good to be playing so badly...he's not a rah rah guy so to lead by example he's got to play better.  Got to figure out if his one defining moment will be the ball that bounced out of his glove in the bottom of the 11th in Gainesville or something much greater.  I for one am pulling for him.

Good analysis and summary. The thing is, the issues were seeing are not going to be helped much when/if we get our 2 pitchers back. Our hitters are having too many non-competitive at bats and giving pitchers too many low pitch count innings. I do seem to remember we went through a similar funk about this time last year, then closed strong. No rest fo the weary though, with TAMU up next.

Getting shut out by the "Sunday" pitcher is pretty bad ….got the hits but not the runs.   Tough loss in game 2....kind of ran ourselves out of a win there but today it was not contest....sure needed to win a home series no matter how good the opponent.   It's not just pitching at the moment..

When the entire lineup is consistently in 0-2 and 1-2 counts, I have to believe it is somewhat a reflection of the approach our hitters are being asked to take. It is very difficult when you’re giving the other teams pitchers 10-12 pitch innings. On the flip side, our pitchers are constantly pitching in 2-1 and 3-1 counts, limiting their pitch selection and driving their pitch count up. Players ultimately have to get their job done, but its time for coach Gross to make some adjustments to whatever approach he is asking for now. It’s not working. And coach Smith needs to make first pitch strikes the highest priority for every pitcher, not location, velocity, or pitch type. I’m shocked at how many college pitchers are unable to unwilling to throw first pitch strikes. Hopefully, we start the turnaround against the Aggies.

It's so rare that our guys make a first pitch strike that I wonder if that's the coaching?    But you are right....we use up our pitch count much faster than most teams we play against.   TB seems to have great control when he wants to but nibbles and nibbles and next thing you know he is well over 100 pitches and it's only the 6th or 7th inning.

It's not coaching...Steve Smith is an effing baseball genius.  It's execution.

I should have been clearer....meant by coaching....so are the players are instructed to not start with a big strike cleanly over the plate ?   ....After they warm up in the bullpen and then take 7 or 8 warm up pitches on the mound it's hard to believe that the kid then is unable to throw a strike on the first ...or the second pitch unless he is given some instruction about that.  :dunno:  I trust coaches are watching when the guy is getting ready to see that he appears to have come control that day before sending him into the game?

They're 18-22 year old amateurs...holy s*** this is ridiculous.  Have you watched Braves pitching this week?  Those guys are getting paid $Millions and have the exact same failures.  The last thing every pitching coach says to a kid before he goes to the mound is "Throw strkes, work fast and work ahead in the count"  I promise you it's 100% on the lack of execution.  You cannot imagine how fast the game acutally is for a freshman pitcher, it's nowhere near as easy as those on this board seem to want to make it.  The experienced postion guys have got to shoulder the load until the young minds catch up with the arm talent.  One other very serious concern is just how pedestrian we are behind the plate, that guy is barely treading water and not able to help his pitchers much at all..  The starter is adequate at best, the back up is not.  The strength of a great team is almost always behind the mask.
