Great start especially being ahead of #1 OSU but there are some good teams within striking distance surprised some teams shot as well as they did considering the conditios

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Despite chilly temperatures and gusty winds, the No. 11 Auburn men's golf team got off to a hot start and leads the field after the first round of the NCAA Louisville Regional Monday afternoon.

The Tigers shot an 8-under 276 in their first tour of the par-71 University of Louisville Golf Club and have four players inside the top 20 overall.

"We had a good day and it is a good start to the week," head coach Nick Clinard said. "It's tough conditions out here – the rough is up, the wind is blowing and it felt like it was 30 degrees when we teed off today.

"I'm really proud of the guys. They hung in there and didn't make a ton of bogeys today. We're here to win every day and try to win a regional championship."

One of the highlights of the day came on the ninth hole as Auburn closed out the front nine. Despite 10-15 mph wind blowing straight back to add to a daunting 495-yard par-4, all five Tigers were able to par the hole.

Auburn was one of only two teams in the 13-team field (Oklahoma State) to escape the hole unscathed.

Graysen Huff and Jovan Rebula were two of only four golfers at the site to produce a bogey-free round.

Rebula is one shot off the lead and in a four-way tie for second at 4-under. The junior was steady all day and carded three of his four birdies on the back nine.

"I got off to a good start, made a couple pars on the first few holes, made a birdie on hole No. 4 and then from there just carried on and played some solid golf today," Rebula said. "I kept the ball in play and hit a lot of greens and that's what was needed today."

Just one stroke behind his teammate, Huff is tied for sixth at 3-under. The fellow third-year player did his damage on the front nine with three birdies and played the back nine at even par.

Trace Crowe is tied for 11th after firing a 1-under 70. The senior had just one bogey to go along with 15 pars and two birdies in his first circuit of the course.

Brandon Mancheno survived an up-and-down round and came out at even par in a tie for 16th. The sophomore shot 3-under on the front nine, but ran into trouble on the back nine, shooting 3-over.

Jacob Solomon rounded out the lineup and is tied for 35th overall at 2-over.

The Tigers lead the field by two strokes at 8-under (276), followed by No. 1 Oklahoma State (278), No. 21 Louisville (280), No. 25 Baylor (280), West Virginia (286), Arizona (287), Iowa State (288), No. 13 North Florida (292), Mississippi State (294), Arkansas State (295), Jacksonville State (300), Southern Illinois (301) and New Mexico (302).

The top five teams and one individual from the regional will advance to the 2019 NCAA Championship in Fayetteville, Ark., May 24-29.

Auburn is paired with Louisville and Oklahoma State for the second round off the No. 1 tee beginning at 6:30 a.m. CT. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.

Jovon had an awful round and we still lead by 8 over #1 OSU. Amazing how well we're playing in stroke play counting the SEC and regional

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The No. 11 Auburn men's golf team continued its dominant play in the second round of the NCAA Louisville Regional Tuesday afternoon. The Tigers fired a 7-under 277 – the second consecutive day with the lowest team score – to maintain their lead at 15-under (276-277--553) overall.

Auburn holds an 8-stroke lead over No. 1 Oklahoma State for the top spot in the 13-team field and is 24 strokes ahead of sixth place No. 13 North Florida. The top five teams after three rounds advance to the NCAA Championship.

"The guys played well today," head coach Nick Clinard said. "The first three guys out made a ton of birdies coming down the stretch. I'm really proud of Jacob Solomon. Trace Crowe hung in there and really only had one bad swing all day. We persevered, made some birdies down the stretch and opened up a nice cushion."

Jacob Solomon led the way for Auburn with a career-low round of 5-under 66. The senior played a clean front nine before catching fire on the back nine. Solomon carded five birdies on the back nine, capping the second-best round by anyone in the field at the par-71 University of Louisville Golf Club.

"I started off a little on the slow side today," Solomon said. "I just parred the first few holes. I made a pretty good birdie on the fourth hole. From there, I couldn't get a putt to fall in until hole 11 and then I rallied off three birdies in a row and finished really strong with birdies on holes 17 and 18.

"It was good because I've been struggling with my game lately, but I rebounded today and things came together."

Solomon is tied for seventh overall at 3-under (73-66--139).

Trace Crowe produced the second-best round by a Tiger with a 3-under 68. Despite a double-bogey on the 13th hole, the senior carded a team-high seven birdies, including three on the final four holes.

He is in sixth on the individual leaderboard at 4-under (70-68--138).

Graysen Huff and Brandon Mancheno are tied for 11th at the annual three-round competition at 1-under.

Mancheno (71-70--141) turned in four birdies with three coming on the back nine en route to a 1-under 70. Huff (68-73--141) carded a team-high 16 pars in his second circuit of the course and ended the day with a 2-over 73.

Jovan Rebula rounded out the Auburn contingent and is tied for 28th on the individual leaderboard at 3-over (67-78--145).

The Tigers lead the field by eight strokes at 15-under (553), followed by No. 1 Oklahoma State (561), No. 25 Baylor (568), Iowa State (570), No. 21 Louisville (571), No. 13 North Florida (577), Arizona (578), West Virginia (579), Arkansas State (585), Mississippi State (585), Southern Illinois (590), New Mexico (593) and Jacksonville State (597).

Should Auburn hold on in the third round, it would be the Tigers' third regional championship in program history, joining the 1997 and 1990 teams.

"I feel really good," Crowe said. "The guys are moving and playing really well. We're set up well for tomorrow, so hopefully we can win."

Kinda expected this figured we would take the safe way and not attack like we have been but off to a bad start at +6 thru 8 holes. The course seems to be playing easier for most teams today except AU. Also we have played the back nine extremely well so hopefully we can repeat that.

I'm not worried about making the cut we got that made but to beat OSU  sure would help psychology going into the nationals

Well the wheels have come off completely we're +10 just unreal how bad we're playing. Not the way to finish going into the nationals.

Poor Brandon Mancheno just had an awful day sure he feels bad

  • 2 weeks later...

Am I looking at the golf scores correctly? Looks like we are in the top 15? Golf? Buehller? I looked early and thought we were out of it.

Amazing, I thought we choked right out of it.  +24 today.  One of the. Worst scores amongst all teams.  Hoping it means we got that rd out our system.

We're in but we fell apart the last two rounds like I never ever have seen. Today we shot +24 as compared to the first day at +4. I mean we had three player shot 80 or better today.

Tomorrow we need to get into top 8 to get into match play

Was the weather a factor bc it looks like a lot of teams (especially those that teed off later) had bad days?

The top teams had the early tee times, besides BYU.  So the teams playing better in general shot ether.
