Crystal Ball Projections for Auburn Targets
By Keith Niebuhr May 14, 2:30 PM
-------------------------------------------------------
Auburn hopes the 2020 recruiting class is as solid as the others of the Gus Malzahn era. After making the top 10 of the final 247Sports recruiting team rankings for each of his first five seasons as coach, Auburn now has finished just outside of it the past two cycles. That said, those classes for the most part still were really strong. Proof of that comes in 1. The average rating per commit, which was very high. 2. The number of true freshmen who contributed in 2018 and 3. The potential difference-makers in the 2019 class, starting with 5-star quarterback Bo Nix.

This cycle, Auburn has gotten off to a relatively slow start.

As of Tuesday, the Tigers hold six commitments, and the No. 29 class ranking.

The good news? Big Cat Weekend is June 1 -- and typically things begin to take off for Auburn after that.

This class has an average rating per commit is 88.55, which is just below the 90.00 threshold for a 4-star average. It's down significantly from the 2019 class, when that number stood at 91.16. One thing to consider, though: Auburn’s average rating is being crushed right now by the 80.00 score that's currently attached to junior college offensive tackle commit Jonathan Buskey. 247Sports and the other sites used for the 247Sports Composite have yet to dig too deep into the junior college ratings. Once they do, Buskey's score is likely to shoot up.

With the Crystal Ball, media members predict where top recruits will land. Even though it's early in the cycle, today we take a look at what the chatter is about some top Auburn targets.

4* Quandarrius Robinson, DE/OLB, Birmingham (Ala.) Jackson-Olin: Not much has changed since our last update a month ago. It's still very close. To recap, Robinson committed to Auburn last summer then de-committed in January. Many assumed at the time he was all Alabama. But, according to a source close to him (and to Robinson), Auburn remains very much in the picture. He has visited Auburn four known times this year and Alabama probably just as much. For now, our pick remains on Auburn, but it could go either way. Robinson isn't expected to have a final decision for a while -- possibly after the 2019 season. If that holds and Auburn has a good season, that might help the Tigers some. Some sources, however, do think the Tide could be tough to beat.

4* Haynes King, QB, Longview (Texas): King, who recently moved into the top 50 of the 247Sports rankings, has just one Crystal Ball pick and it's on "foggy." Why aren't we seeing more projections? Well, because this recruitment could go in a number of directions. We do think even though Auburn has one quarterback committed that the Tigers remain very much in the picture -- much more than people think. King has made two known trips to Auburn and could return this summer. He continues to be a priority recruit for the Tigers.

3* Rodney Groce, LB, Pleasant Grove (Ala.): Auburn has been his leader for awhile, but offers from Alabama and Oklahoma have added intrigue to this recruitment. Is he a priority to the Tigers? To the Tide? It's hard to know. If Auburn pushes, the Tigers certainly will have a chance. Same for Alabama. The 3-star backer goes back and forth on his commitment time frame, but there is some chatter a decision could come this spring. He's certainly someone to watch and he plans to return to Auburn on June 1 for Big Cat. Look for Auburn to attend his spring scrimmage.

3* Miller Merriweather-Lewis, OG, Ocala (Fla.) Trinity Catholic: All seven Crystal Ball picks right now are for LSU and things look good for the program. That said, Merriweather-Lewis calls Auburn his No. 2 and says this one is close. VERY close. Look for him to return a few more times to Auburn before all is said and done. He told us recently Auburn will get an official visit. He could take that as early as this spring or summer. Auburn is very much in this recruitment.

5* Myles Murphy, DE, Powder Springs (Ga.) Hillgrove: Clemson is the overwhelming choice in the 247Sports Crystal Ball. The 5-star recruit has a final two of Clemson and Auburn and he will announce his college choice Friday. Our pick is on Clemson and our confidence level is fairly high at the moment. In fact, our intel suggests Murphy already has told Clemson he is coming. Auburn battled hard and finished ahead of several top-tier programs but Clemson is a real force right now on the trail and that couldn't be overcome we believe.

3* Desmond Tisdol, LB, Rochelle (Ga.) Wilcox County: This one has gone back and forth a lot. Auburn has led. South Carolina has led. Now, others are trying to get into the mix (see FSU, Kentucky and Nebraska among others). The Gamecocks lead in the Crystal Ball, but the Tigers certainly have a real shot here and Tisdol plans to attend Big Cat Weekend on June 1. Also, the Tigers will get an official visit. If the Auburn staff (namely linebackers coach Travis Williams) continues to push, Auburn could be tough to beat here. With Auburn needing four linebackers in the class, Tisdol is a big target.

4* Ethan Pouncey, CB, Winter Park (Fla.): Auburn is trending up for this talented 4-star cornerback, with schools such as Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Texas also in the mix. A favorable depth chart seems to be working in the Tigers' favor -- along with the fact he is very close to the Auburn staff (Kodi Burns is his area recruiter). Pouncey hopes to return to Auburn on June 1 for Big Cat. There only is one Crystal Ball pick in (it's ours) and it is for the Tigers. This would be a huge get if Auburn can pull it off.

4* Cameron Riley, LB, Evergreen (Ala.) Hillcrest: The 4-star backer has Auburn in front and the Crystal Ball reflects that. The Tigers have all three Crystal Ball predictions. That said, he wants to also take official visits to Oklahoma, Texas A&M and possibly others. Look for him to attend Big Cat on June 1. It wouldn't be a shock if Auburn got Riley on board this summer if the Tigers put their foot on the gas.

3* Javion Cohen, OT, Phenix City (Ala.) Central: The former South Carolina commit still is considering the Gamecocks, but it feels like Auburn has moved into a good spot. The Tigers offered in April and proximity to home could help. Oklahoma certainly is another team to watch but the Sooners already have two tackles committed and may lead for at least one other. South Carolina still leads in the Crystal Ball, but Auburn absolutely is a team to watch.

3* Tate Johnson, OG, Hogansville (Ga.) Callaway: FSU has a 2:1 Crystal Ball edge over Auburn, but our intel continues to suggest the Tigers might be in the best position to land the 3-star guard who saw his stock rise a significant amount this spring. Look for him to attend Big Cat at Auburn on June 1. A summer decision seems likely.

My thinking is that there are a lot of recruits that are coming our way starting in June with the Big Cat event.  It does seem that we are rapidly going in the wrong direction with our recruiting thinking.

Wonder why we can't get a 5* OT/OG interested in entertaining the idea of coming to AU

You're one of the most head in the clouds always positive posters on here and even you can't make this make any sense....that's how crazy this is....recruits very rarely think about recruiting the way people on a forum do, it's really similar to how there are just a few people who understand what scouts really look at in basketball as far as going pro. Most think you have to average some crazy numbers and lead a team to a championship when it's not even close....recruits in football basically want 2 things. Know theircoach knows how to coach their position and playing time. That's it. And right now hardly anybody can offer as much playing time as us.....and we are still fighting to have decent prospects interested? Doesn't make any sense at all
