ellitor 33,039
Quote Georgia OL commits to Auburn By Keith Niebuhr 36 minutes ago (Photo: 247Sports) Auburn's recruiting hot streak continued Monday morning when offensive lineman Tate Johnson of Hogansville (Ga.) Callaway publicly committed to Gus Malzahn's Tigers. Johnson, a 3-star guard, is commitment No. 9 overall for Auburn but the third already in June. Offensive tackle Javion Cohen committed June 1. Last Friday, receiver Elijah Canion gave the Tigers his verbal. Johnson, who is 6-feet-4, 310 pounds, is the No. 23 guard nationally in the industry generated 247Sports Composite. With Johnson on board, Auburn now has the No. 21 class in the country. The Tigers sat at No. 29 when the month began. Johnson chose Auburn over Florida State and Georgia Tech. "Auburn is just different, man," Johnson told Auburn Undercover when we shot his commitment video last week. "You go there and you just feel the family atmosphere. The biggest thing for me is the relationships. I’m a relationship guy. I feel like if I can bond with you I can run through a brick wall for you. Coach (J.B.) Grimes, Coach (Gus) Malzahn and all the coaching staff, they just really let you know they care about you and that’s someone I want to play for." Defensive line coach Rodney Garner, Johnson's area recruiter, and Grimes, were Johnson's recruiters of record. Johnson actually gave the Tigers a silent commitment on June 1 during Big Cat Weekend. When Auburn Undercover caught up with Johnson, here's what he told us about his recruitment ... AUBURN UNDERCOVER: How hard did the Auburn commits recruit you during Big Cat Weekend, the Tigers' big recruiting bash on June 1? JOHNSON: “Hard man. Javion (Cohen) and I are good buddies. Avery (Jernigan) and I are good buddies. I’ve gotten to be good buddies with Chayil Garnett. They were all recruiting me hard. They just want me on their squad. They know we can build a good class and that we can get some other recruits in here and do something special for Auburn University.” *** AUBURN UNDERCOVER: What do you do well right now on the field — and what do you need to work on moving forward to be a success in college? JOHNSON:: “I feel like I’m a big athletic guy. I can move well in space but I’m also really powerful in a phone booth. One thing that I want to work on during my senior season is really using my hands — my hands in the run game. to really be a force, other than just my lower body. When an offensive lineman can combine his lower body with his hands in the run game, he can really be a problem.” *** AUBURN UNDERCOVER: The recruiting process can really start to wear prospects out the longer things drag on. How glad are you to have this over and done with now, when you have several months until you sign in December? (NOTE: Johnson told us he plans to graduate in December and enroll at Auburn next January? JOHNSON: “Honestly, it's a big relief. It’s a weight off my shoulders. Going into my senior season, I feel like we can do some special things at my high school. I just really want to be dedicated to my team and bring a championship to Callaway High School.” *** AUBURN UNDERCOVER: When might you make your official visit with the Tigers? JOHNSON: “I was planning on taking it this week — the week of the 15th (of June), but since I’m a commit now I think I might take it in December to recruit some big-name guys, help out some." AUBURN UNDERCOVER: Do you think you might still take official visits to other schools, or will Auburn be the only school that will get one of those from here on out since you're on the board as a commit? JOHNSON: “I think Auburn is the place for me. It just feels right” *** Below, you will find Johnson's highlights from the 2018 season. Worth noting, he had a particularly strong camp season this spring. That seems to be when his stock rose and he started to get more attention from college staffs. Auburn, in fact, offered him March 30. 1

One would think a guy that coaches kids for a living might have a leg up on your run of the mill poster like myself. I played tackle and guard in high school and I was slow....kinda like what I see with this guy.
