It is time for the NCAA to either say investigation is over and what Auburn did to penalize themselves was enough or to state their case on why more needs to be done and what those penalties would be. Then we can either accept the penalties if there are any or we can protest the penalties if we think they are to severe.

But why?  They can further screw AU by letting it hang out there longer and guys like Sharife Cooper who are still undecided become less comfortable with committing given the cloud of punishment still lingering.  It would be so NCAA-like for them to continue this slow play.  They don’t make decisions in reasonable timeframes. They prefer to let it simmer, and guys like our writer pal,  Pat Forde, lap it up and make suppositions into stories with his “it looks like AU might have just made things worse for itself” routine.

The list of NCAA penalties Auburn basketball has incurred since 2017

Auburn University complied with an open records request on Friday, sending AL.com a list of all the NCAA infractions from 2017 to the present day.

There were only three violations listed — all of them minor and none impacting the eligibility of any athletes. All names of staff members and athletes were omitted by the school.

AL.com had requested knowledge of “any NCAA penalties that Auburn men’s basketball has faced since Sept. 2017 until present.” However, two penalties the university provided actually occurred in January 2017. Only one occurred since Chuck Person was arrested, which was the purpose of AL.com’s inquiry.

It is important to note that the suspensions of Danjel Purifoy and Austin Wiley were not NCAA-imposed. Those were self-imposed suspensions. In addition, Auburn’s recruiting limitations from Sept. 2017-April 2018 were also self-imposed. So neither of those penalties would be subject to this open records inquiry.

In addition, a source told AL.com that the school had yet to receive a Notice of Allegations from the NCAA as of Aug. 7 — though the school is expecting to receive an NOA from the NCAA at a later date.

The document below gives a full accounting of the NCAA’s official penalties over the last two-plus years.

AL.com decided to publish for the purpose of full disclosure of what Auburn has reported to the NCAA since person’s arrest.

The three sanctions included an unidentified staff member paying to retrieve a athlete’s car after it was illegally parked. The athlete’s aid was reduced by $85 and the staffer was suspended for three days without pay. This occurred in January 2017.

The second penalty occurred in Sept. 2018, when Auburn paid for a meal to an individual accompanying a prospect. The violation wasn’t reported until the prospect committed to Auburn. The conference said the unnamed assistant coach couldn’t recruit for a 15-day period, which started last month.

The third penalty occurred in April 2017, and involved an assistant coach having knowledge of a basketball game with prospects that included a student manager. Auburn suspended the assistant coach’s recruiting privileges for a two-week period in July 2017.
