Projected 2019 Auburn depth chart at end of fall camp

By Tom Green | tgreen@al.com

Auburn wrapped up the camp portion of preseason practices on Sunday, with the start of the fall semester underway on Monday. The Tigers will now turn their attention toward preparation for their season opener against Oregon on Aug. 31, using this week to get into the routine of game weeks and sorting out some position battles in anticipation of the start of the season.

Auburn exited fall camp with a lot of information at every position, as did AL.com through practice observations and interviews with players and coaches over the last two-plus weeks. We take a crack at Auburn’s projected depth chart with 12 days remaining until that Week 1 matchup in Arlington, Texas -- and yes, that includes a projected starter at quarterback despite Gus Malzahn having yet named a QB1, though a decision and subsequent announcement seems imminent.

Projected Auburn depth chart:

OFFENSE

Quarterback

Bo Nix, freshman

Joey Gatewood, redshirt freshman

Cord Sandberg, redshirt freshman

Running back:

Boobee Whitlow, redshirt sophomore

Kam Martin, senior

Shaun Shivers, sophomore

Harold Joiner, redshirt freshman

Malik Miller, redshirt junior

D.J. Williams, freshman (was limited early due to offseason shoulder procedure)

Mark-Antony Richards, freshman (underwent surgery on right leg)

H-back/tight end

Jay Jay Wilson, senior

John Samuel Shenker, redshirt sophomore

Spencer Nigh, senior

Tyler Fromm, freshman

Luke Deal, freshman (recovering from December ACL surgery)

Can Jay Jay Wilson give Auburn the versatility it has lacked at H-back?

The Arizona State grad transfer didn't drop a pass in fall camp until Auburn's second scrimmage -- and even that was due to a pass breakup by a defender.

Split end receiver

Anthony Schwartz, sophomore (underwent surgery on left hand; questionable for Week 1)

Marquis McClain, redshirt junior

Zach Farrar, junior

Shedrick Jackson, sophomore

Flanker receiver

Eli Stove, redshirt junior (limited due to minor knee injury) OR

Anthony Schwartz, sophomore (broken hand)

Matthew Hill, redshirt freshman

Jashawn Sheffield, freshman (limited toward end of camp with undisclosed injury)

Slot receiver

Will Hastings, redshirt senior (limited while returning from ACL surgery)

Matthew Hill, redshirt freshman

Ja’Varrius Johnson, freshman

Big slot receiver

Seth Williams, sophomore

Sal Cannella, senior

Marquis McClain, redshirt junior

Left tackle

Prince Tega Wanogho, redshirt senior

Bailey Sharp, redshirt senior

Alec Jackson, redshirt sophomore

Left guard

Marquel Harrell, redshirt senior

Tashawn Manning, redshirt sophomore

Kameron Stutts, redshirt freshman

Center

Kaleb Kim, redshirt senior

Nick Brahms, redshirt sophomore

Right guard

Mike Horton, redshirt senior

Jalil Irvin, redshirt freshman OR

Keiondre Jones, freshman (limited toward end of camp with undisclosed injury)

Right tackle

Jack Driscoll, redshirt senior

Brodarious Hamm, redshirt sophomore

Austin Troxell (out for year with torn ACL)

Prince Michael Sammons (out with undisclosed injury)

Could Brodarious Hamm be next in line as Auburn's 6th offensive lineman?

The sixth offensive lineman has been a lucrative role at Auburn in recent years, and redshirt sophomore Brodarious Hamm appears set to take over now that Austin Troxell is out for the year.

DEFENSE

Buck

Nick Coe, redshirt junior OR

T.D. Moultry, junior

Big Kat Bryant, junior

Derick Hall, freshman

Defensive tackle

Derrick Brown, senior

Gary Walker, senior

Daquan Newkirk, redshirt junior (out with Achilles injury)

With injuries to 2 key pieces, Auburn plans to be "creative" in replacing Dontavius Russell at defensive tackle

Auburn is looking for a solution at its second defensive tackle spot, where the Tigers must replace four-year starter Dontavius Russell while coping with injuries to Daquan Newkirk and Coynis Miller.

Defensive tackle

Tyrone Truesdell, junior OR

Nick Coe, redshirt junior

Coynis Miller (limited due to shoulder injury)

Daquan Newkirk, redshirt junior (out with Achilles injury)

Defensive end

Marlon Davidson, senior

Big Kat Bryant, junior

Colby Wooden, freshman

Jaren Handy, freshman

Charles Moore, freshman

Caleb Johnson, redshirt freshman

Weakside linebacker

Owen Pappoe, freshman OR

Zakoby McClain, sophomore

Josh Marsh, redshirt freshman

Middle linebacker

K.J. Britt, junior OR

Chandler Wooten, junior

Michael Harris

Kameron Brown, freshman (limited toward end of camp with undisclosed injury)

Strongside linebacker

Chandler Wooten, junior

Zakoby McClain, sophomore

O.C. Brothers, freshman

Owen Pappoe is "born different," but that's nothing new for the 5-star freshman linebacker

The No. 1 outside linebacker in the 2019 class will see the field immediately for Auburn, and this fall he has received reps with the Tigers' first-team defense.

Boundary corner

Noah Igbinoghene, junior

Devan Barrett, junior

Nehemiah Pritchett, freshman

Traivon Leonard, junior

Field corner

Javaris Davis, redshirt senior

Roger McCreary, sophomore

Christian Tutt, sophomore

Nickelback

Christian Tutt, sophomore

Jordyn Peters, junior (limited while returning from Achilles injury)

Zion Puckett, freshman

Field safety

Jeremiah Dinson, redshirt senior

Smoke Monday, sophomore

Malcolm Askew, redshirt sophomore

Boundary safety

Daniel Thomas, senior

Jamien Sherwood, sophomore

Jaylin Simpson, freshman

SPECIAL TEAMS

Kicker

Anders Carlson, redshirt sophomore

Sage Ledbetter, senior

Punter

Arryn Siposs, junior

Patrick Markwalter, freshman walk-on

Australian punter Arryn Siposs dishes on Outback Steakhouse, the Bloomin' Onion

Auburn's Australian-born punter shares his thoughts on America's Australian-themed chain restaurant.

Long snapper

Boobee Whitlow, redshirt sophomore

Anthony Schwartz, sophomore (out with broken hand) AND

Shaun Shivers, sophomore

Punt returners

Christian Tutt, sophomore OR

Matthew Hill, redshirt freshman OR

Javaris Davis, redshirt senior

I wonder if you’ll see Alec Jackson move back to DT next season with the influx of Oline recruits and the lack of DL depth.

Purely based on returning DT players compared to the number Oline recruits coming in.  Auburn will lose 4 possibly 5 defensive line guys this season.

Nope. No point in doing that. He’ll just compete for the starting job next year

I think the Will & Sam LB positions are labeled incorrectly in the article. From Coach Steele's & T-Will's interviews the other day I take it the Mike & Will are the primary playing LB positions with KJ & CW being interchangable there while Zacoby & Pappoe battling at the Sam LB. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Barring serious injuries or attrition there is DL depth. Remember at least 1 if not both Charles Moore & Handy are expected by the staff to bulk up & be at DT next season.

Brown, Coe, & MD. Where are you getting 4 to 5?

Gary Walker is listed as a Senior and if Big Kat/TD has a coming out party and gets some NFL love who knows?

He's a walk on that was given a scholly last year. He may or may not remain on scholly this year & liely won't play much barring a rash of injuries.

Highly unlikely.

Unfortunate about DJ and MAR. Honestly think they're our 2-A and 2-B if healthy. Truly phenomenal backs and my man crush MAR is gonna be back before you know it! Boy how I'd love for KMart to just explode this year for like 1,200+.

I think Fromm and Deal are legit once acclimated. It is nice to have that veteran presence with JJ.

Not a fan of our interior play last year but all accounts sound like things have improved... here's hoping.

We sound injury heavy right now but we still look solid. KKim gotta show out this year and I think Horton/Harrell will look better with more consistent C play.

Troxell has had an incredibly difficult time here at Auburn. Hate to hear this for him but hopefully someone steps up in his place as the 6th man.

I think my other man crush Hall will do well in limited playing time. Kat, Moultry, and Coe are all names that I feel like I've been waiting to see a Lemonier/Lawson type year from.

Surprising we don't have a little more depth at DT so that this isn't as much of a struggle. Hopefully guys heal quick and we don't have a "tweener" struggling on the inside.

Handy and Moore are no joke for freshmen. Marlon should be a monster this year.

What have you seen from Farrar to make you think he is better than Eli Stove? Will Hastings? I would say our best 4 would be , S Williams, hands down best all around, Eli Stove- Veteran presence with electric ability, Schwartz- Speed alone is a game changer, then 4th would be Hill.

2 out of 4 ain't bad. It's Flash, Seth, Wee Willie, & Stove when healthy. Hill has a change to crack the top 4 if he can start being consistent.

Not sure how much he will play this season. The staff wants him to bulk up.

Pappoe apparently is a force, but I'm sure McClain is too.....need to see them together. I bet that would be one of the more athletic sets of linebackers you can find....

Smoke is going to have to play, I appreciate the work everybody put in but just because you're older doesn't mean anything.....he should start somewhere....same go for the wr.... Can't cry about wr production if you're not playing the most talented guys

Been a lot of talk about them being the most athletic tandem LBs at AU since the early 2000s when it's their turn to be the primary LBs in our D.

So I did some digging into Steele's nomenclature and can't find a good distinction between the Money, Mack, and Sam backer positions. (Like you, the Will, Mike, and Sam is what I'm accustomed to.)

I need to backtrack, looks like Mack is the mlb and Money is the outside backer in the nickle. Sam only being seen in the base 4-3. That sound right @bigbird?

Ran across articles detailing how Darrell Williams played all 3 backer positions in games.

Since we stay in the nickel so much nowadays, KJ and Chandler will see the field together a good bit, but I wouldn't be surprised to see KJ and Pappoe to be your actual starters for the 1st play. I'm sure the depth chart will list 3 starters which will be KJ, Chandler, and OP.
