Auburn last in punt coverage

Amazing isn't it? Reasons and solutions in article. Makes you wonder what or why even practice in August. Just wing it until the middle of September and hope it works out.

"The Tigers are giving up 35.8 yards per return on punt coverage so far this season, giving up 179 yards there on five returns over two games.

Auburn’s adjusting with head coach Gus Malzahn calling for punter Arryn Siposs to kick his punts higher and to give the Auburn coverage team more time to get to the opposing return man."

With our defense, if we could just get the special teams to step up we can win a few games that people are predicting we will lose. If our ST continues to stink, well that may cost us a game or 2. This needs to be corrected asap.

The coverage isn't his fault but Siposs hasn't really been booming many kicks either... might know he can't out punt his coverage with how bad it has been

Calling it now. Our special teams will ultimately be the reason the bottom falls out for Gus. We will have one of those games that we have to win to keep hot seat talk at bay and a major return will be the difference in the game. It just seems like it would be a fittingly tragic and poetic end to the Gus era. Used up all his juice to fix up the defense and in turned ruined the offense and ignored special teams to the point where it marks the end of him.

Not rooting for this to happen, mind you but I can honestly see this playing out. With such slim margin for error due to our offense and such an apparent weakness on special teams it can most certainly burn us.

There was pre-season chatter on this board that made him seem like a legitiimate Heisman candidate. Gus never told him we're not playing with Australian rules?

It'll be one of the reasons but the main reason will be his inability to evaluate, recruit, and develop offensive players.  We don't have a single position group on offense that is championship caliber.

Recruiting maestro and TE/H back coach Larry Porter is listed as our guy in charge of special teams. Not his first ST stint, he was UNCs ST coach before coming to Auburn.

Last season we gave up a total of 37 yards in punt returns. The WHOLE season, 37 yards. This year 131 yards in just two games. This isn't the punter's fault, he's doing fine. Who or what ever changed needs to go back to last year's system. Kick coverage this year is the worst I've ever seen at AU and that covers a bunch of years.

Kick coverage is all about heart and effort. It's a Jimmy/Joe thing, IMO.

Well that explains it because ours looks to be a Larry/Moe thing.

I hope we don't get flagged again after scoring the go ahead touchdown. Remember? we had to kickoff from our 25. That could have cost us big time against Oregon.

siposs is not kicking 60 yarders, but his punts have NOT been low line drives either.  the other 10 have to get down there in spots and make a tackle.

Here here...a voice of reason!
