toddc 13,194
Quote Recruiting Insider: Notes and visitor intel By Keith Niebuhr 101 minutes ago As we enter a busy recruiting weekend for the Tigers, here is the latest football-related intel ... and yes, we have much to cover. There are no official visitors this weekend for football. *** We wanted to give you a full visitors list Friday, but 1. New names still are coming in; 2. One source has asked we hold off on posting a few names until Saturday (probably so other schools can't poach them). So here's what we have for now -- and be on the lookout Saturday morning for more. And, yes, we expect to list new big names at that time. 5-star (247Sports Composite) 2021 defensive end Dylan Brooks, Roanoke (Ala.) Handley 5-star 2021 safety James Williams, Davie (Fla.) Western 5-star 2022 cornerback Khamauri Rogers, Lexington (Miss.) Holmes County 5-star 2022 defensive end Khurtiss Perry, Montgomery (Ala.) Park Crossing 4-star running back Tank Bigsby, Callaway (Ga.) -- AU COMMIT 4-star receiver Kobe Hudson, LaGrange (Ga.) Troup -- AU COMMIT 4-star linebacker Wesley Steiner, Warner Robins (Ga.) Houston County -- -- AU COMMIT 4-star safety Chris Thompson Jr., Duncanville (Texas) — AU COMMIT 4-star receiver Ze’Vian Capers, Alpharetta (GA.) Denmark — AU COMMIT 4-star receiver J.J. Evans, Montevallo (Ala.) -- AU COMMIT 4-star offensive tackle Javion Cohen, Phenix City (Ala.) Central -- AU COMMIT 4-star linebacker Cameron Riley, Evergreen (Ala.) Hillcrest -- AU COMMIT 4-star linebacker Desmond Tisdol, Wilcox County (Ga.) 4-star 2021 quarterback Aaron McLaughlin, Alpharetta (GA.) Denmark — AU COMMIT 4-star 2021 receiver Julian Nixon, Roswell (Ga.) Centennial 4-star 2021 safety Ahmari Harvey, Tallahassee (Fla.) Florida State Univ. School 4-star 2021 defensive tackle Tim Keenan, Birmingham (Ala.) Ramsay 3-star center Avery Jernigan, Blackshear (Ga.) Pierce County -- Callaway (Ga.) -- AU COMMIT 3-star offensive guard Tate Johnson, Callaway (Ga.) -- AU COMMIT 3-star offensive tackle/guard Jeremiah Wright, Selma (Ala.) -- -- AU COMMIT -3-star defensive tackle Damarjhe Lewis, Griffin (Ga.). 4-star 2022 offensive tackle Fisher Anderson, Franklin (Tenn.) 3-star safety Sidney Williams, Mobile (Ala.) Vigor (Ala.) 3-star 2021 offensive tackle Jason Amsler, Franklin (Tenn.) UR 2021 receiver Semaj James, Tallahassee (Fla.) Leon. UR 2022 linebacker Brandon Franklin, Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson UR 2022 corner Andre Stewart, Milton (Ga.) -- AU COMMIT UR kicker/punter Evan McGuire, Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson *** Four-star cornerback target Kendall Dennis of Lakeland (Fla.) initially planned to take his official visit to Auburn this weekend. That has been changed at the Tigers' request. This cycle, Auburn is focusing more on getting as many targets as possible to official after the season, not during it. The biggest reason for that is the Tigers want to be able to actually spend quality time with a prospect. It's hard to do that on a game weekend. Plus, most targets will want to attend the home games against Georgia and Alabama on their own dime. By getting them to official later on, it's a two-for-one type of deal for Auburn -- or even a three-for-one. First, they come for a big unofficial. Then, they return for their official while Auburn still is fresh on their minds. As for Dennis ... we continue to hear Auburn leads and by a good margin. But ... *** It wasn't that long ago when we said Auburn may take four defensive backs -- not five -- in the class. Then, it changed back to five defensive backs. Now? Thursday, we were told it's four again. So with three defensive backs on the commit list, Auburn has room for only one more. It most likely will be a corner. Who is on top of the board? We don't have the answer to that question, but Dennis, Brian George of Highland Community College (Kan.) and 4-star Ole Miss commit Eric Reed probably are the main guys. Auburn seems to be recruiting all three pretty hard so perhaps it could be a first-in-the-boat situation. George's recruitment has been all over the map. Reed visited Georgia last weekend and told me this week he hasn't yet finalized his visit to Auburn, but he does plan to get there this fall. *** On the subject of numbers, with six spots left to fill for 2020, here's the new breakdown of where those spots could go ... DEFENSIVE LINE: 3-4 more. DEFENSIVE BACK: 1 more. TIGHT END: 1 more. QUARTERBACK: 0-1 more. KICKER: 0-1 more. Surprised to see quarterback listed? Well, it seems the Tigers potentially -- POTENTIALLY -- could try to add a second signal caller to the class should it look as if they'll lose someone on the current roster after this season. I think most everyone knows which one the Tigers are monitoring. It sounds like the staff will know whether anyone plans to depart while there still would be time to grab a second quarterback for 2020. Who are some possible targets? We continue to hear North Carolina commit Jacolby Criswell of Arkansas could be someone to watch. He always has liked the Tigers. *** There is no doubt that defensive line recruiting is Auburn's priority No. 1 right now. With only Daniel Foster-Allen of Mobile (Ala.) St. Paul's Episcopal committed, the Tigers aren't exactly in an ideal spot. Earlier this week, they offered 4-star Texas defensive end commit Princely Umanmielen of Manor (Texas). Seemingly, that offer came out of the blue. But in reality, the Tigers have tracked him for awhile. It was made clear to Umanmielen an offer only would come if he had genuine interest in Auburn. When he called the staff Wednesday evening, the Tigers thought that was a good sign. There is some chatter he may want to leave the area -- he lives fairly close to the Texas campus. But Auburn has no illusions here. The Tigers know Umanmielen will be difficult to flip. But they feel like he's worth the effort. Umanmielen told Auburn Undercover this week if Auburn wants him to officially visit, he probably will. Apparently, he is friends with Auburn safety commit Chris Thompson. *** Even though Georgia seems to have lots of momentum with 4-star defensive end target Zykeivous Walker of Ellaville (Ga.) Schley County, there are some at Auburn who remain optimistic the Tigers can be a factor up to the end. Walker plans to officially visit Auburn the weekend of Nov. 2. As we mentioned earlier, the Tiger prefer officials to come after the season. But Walker is trying to take his during the season. Also on the defensive line ... -It has been hard to read 4-star defensive tackle McKinnley Jackson of Lucedale (Miss.) George County and at least one of our sources isn't crazy about the Tigers' chances. Jackson will official to Alabama this weekend. His official to Auburn is set for Dec. 14-16. He doesn't plan to announce his decision until National Signing Day in February. Secondary coach Marcus Woodson, a Mississippi native, is leading up this recruitment. -Auburn would love to flip 4-star end B.J. Ojulari of Marietta (Ga.) from Tennessee, but since committing to the Vols in August, Ojulari's communication with the Tigers has dramatically dropped. -Auburn continues to work extremely hard on 4-star end Jay Hardy of Chattanooga (Tenn.) McCallie School and thinks it has a shot, we're told. Right now, there is no doubt Tennessee is the favorite. Hardy likes that program an awful lot -- so much so we'd absolutely put our Crystal Ball pick on the Vols if he was announcing today. But apparently there are some in his camp that may prefer Auburn. The country's No. 5 strong-side end, Hardy told us earlier this week he plans to be in Auburn on Saturday. Let's see if he makes it. Auburn is talking -- and he is listening. But there is much work to do. -Auburn's evaluation of junior college defensive linemen continues. It seems possible, perhaps even likely, at least one signee in this class on the line will come from the junior colleges. With an open week coming after the Florida game next week, you could see Garner scouting some of these potential targets in person. *** Here's a little more on 5-star 2021 defensive tackle target Lee Hunter of Eight Mile (Ala.) Blount, who told us Thursday the Tigers have a "big" lead over his No. 2 team, Georgia: Hunter said he doesn't talk much to the Auburn staff via telephone. The communication mostly is via text. That's the same with the other programs recruiting him. The reason: He's just not a big phone talker. "The only time I communicate with them is when I go up there (to Auburn)," Hunter said. "(Defensive line coach Rodney) Garner and (defensive coordinator Kevin) Steele. I like them -- I love ‘em.” Here is Hunter's upcoming visit schedule: Sept. 28: Alabama (vs. Ole Miss) Oct. 5: Florida (vs. Auburn) Oct. 12: LSU (vs. Florida) Nov. 9: Alabama (vs. LSU) Nov. 16: Auburn (vs. Georgia) Nov. 30: Auburn (vs. Alabama) *** Four-star running back commit Tank Bigsby of Callaway (Ga.), one of Auburn's most touted 2020 recruits, visited Georgia last weekend, which given the Bulldogs' recruiting track record is somewhat of a concern. But at Auburn, the Tigers continue to feel good about things. Bigsby already has attended two Auburn home games this season and plans to return Saturday for a third. *** Four-star linebacker Desmond Tisdol of Wilcox County (Ga.) says he will attend Saturday's game. He loves Auburn and was close to comming to the Tigers this summer before another 4-star, Wesley Steiner, beat him to the punch. With three linebackers committed, Auburn seems fairly set there. But the Tigers will continue to recruit Tisdol and keep him "warm" as we like to say just in case a spot should open up. We've been told by multiple people Tisdol is having a heck of a season. *** Speaking of linebackers playing well, the word is the Tigers are thrilled with the on-field performances of the three commits -- Steiner, 5-star Trenton Simpson of Charlotte (N.C.) Mallard Creek and 4-star Cameron Riley of Evergreen (Ala.) Hillcrest. One source told us that Riley, the lowest-rated of the three, might actually be having the best season of the group. *** Here's an interesting tidbit ... All along we've been hearing the Tigers were in a good spot with 4-star tight end Jeremiah Pegues of Oxford (Miss.). Also, he did tell us in August that Auburn had a big lead. But one source said this week the threat from the hometown Ole Miss Rebels is very real. In any event, to be fully prepared the Tigers continue to evaluate other prospects, including a few at the junior college level that have caught Auburn's eye. In no way are we suggesting Auburn has fallen with Pegues, only that Auburn plans to be prepared for whatever might come and isn't treating him like a slam dunk. As for Pegues, it sounds like he will return to Auburn in the very near future.
