Joey Gatewood usage

Yeah, I guess I'd know better.  LOL.

Every report I heard from fall camp said Nix clearly outplayed Gatewood.

Nix has been groomed to play QB at AU since he was in the 8the grade, by a former great AU QB.  Gatewood has been a QB since the last couple years?  Come on.

Look, I love Gatewood.  But get used to waving goodbye to him, because we'll all be doing that after this season, or next.  Then he can become a running specialist for Arkansas State.  Which is where he belongs, in the grand scheme of things.

This is hilarious but it's honest

Joey Gatewood is not the second coming of Cam Newton. We will win a bunch of games and probably championships with Nix. Some have it. Some don’t.  Nix has it. He is a freshman and played like it today

Very excited about next week.  Gus is undefeated against Bye.  The O-line should look fantastic playing Madden, eating steaks and watching real O-lines playing on TV.

It's because they're so caught up in the "feel good Bo Nix grew up an AU fan and his daddy played for AU" story. Someone on here legit said weeks ago that it means so much to the AU family that Bo Nix

Im not sure what you gained from the last two stanzas there. You implied/stated that this guy, that has been groomed for this offense for over half a decade, is supposed to be this talent thats head and shoulders better right? How long is it going to take before we see that on the field? If theres some way these wet dreams of yours could transfer to the games, we'd all be better off, but I dont think thats happening any time soon

Yes. The Juniors and Seniors on this team want to win now. They don’t want to groom a QB for 2021.

And we don’t need Tom Brady to run a Gus Malzahn offense. Gus makes all the audibles from sideline no matter who is in the game. So we don’t need a savant who’s been groomed since birth to run our simple offense. We just need a dude who can hit open passes, protect the ball, and not take 22 yard sacks on third down when we’re in FG range.

I think Gus truly believes that Bo Nix is the future of Auburn football, and Gus is going to give Nix every opportunity to prove that.  And I think Gus is right to do so, given the fragility of freshmen egos.

Man...to hell with an ego in a game like that. One guy wasn't getting it done and was actually doing more damage. Put the other one in. It couldn't have gotten any worse. You speak of QB controversy lol. How you think JG feels now watching your teammate basically drowning out there on the field and your HC doesn't call upon you to try and help the team. What kind of confidence you think Gus portrayed to Joey in that situation? There's your QB controversy. I just hope it doesn't carry over to the team, because they all saw the same thing. Bo had a bad day...horrible day actually and nobody did a damn thing to help that kid. Not a thing. And I'm not talking about players. The coaches left that kid on the field to burn.

Yes, Dan.  No one won with how that unfolded.  My heart hurt for them all for different reasons.

There is no "I" in TEAM.  Coaching is teaching.  I coach daily.  When a struggling student cannot answer a question, I call for backup. As the "coach", I assume responsibility for putting him or her in the position to be accountable.  It may be, "Let me give you more time to think about it, and we'll come back."  It may be, "_____can you help him out this time?"  And I ALWAYS return to the child with a different question down the road, because that may be the one he knows.  It's all about putting the individual in the place to be successful, but here is the thing...

1.  There are countless others waiting for a turn.  And they deserve one.  And the waiting game the rest have to play while giving that ONE individual ample attention and opportunity can be excruciating.

2.  If a child is not ready, due to his own issues or mine (if I think he is but isn't), he needs time to regroup.

The look of relief on a struggler's face when back-up assistance IS called, and the chance to redeem himself in a future opportunity are gifts that quality teachers make use of.

That is not what happened yesterday.

There is plenty of blame and there are plenty of reasons/excuses/take your pick to go around.

But there is not, nor has there ever been an I in TEAM.

I just hated to see the kid out there rattled and confused without a lifeline. Gus put too much on his shoulders yesterday. It reminded me how bad I felt for JJ in a similar situation years ago. Bo just couldn't get right yesterday and the coaches failed to utilize what we all considered a strength in having a capable QB2.

So much debate in the threads about the message it sends to the struggler to take a breather. The issue is not permanent replacement.  It's temporary BACK-UP when the front line is drowning!  It's personnel over plan, especially when the plan does not seem to be effective.

It sends a message to the TEAM that everyone is valuable if everyone who is capable gets a turn.  It sends a message to the STRUGGLER that others have his back for a moment when he doesn't, for a variety of very understandable reasons.  I wasn't there, but I could nearly feel the vibe through the radio enroute from Pensacola, oddly.  It would rattle anyone, and he deserved better.

It may sound simplistic, but not getting a turn in the face of another's obvious struggle is a slap in the face to the waiting. What good is a depth chart when it's physically or mentally needed if it's not utilized?  I believe the criticisms being made about the limited amount of personnel utilized yesterday are extremely well-founded.  It's the unpredictable that seems to be missing in Auburn--and it could just be the spark that's needed to throw the opponent off its gameplan, too.

Lots of folks worried about QB controversy lol. Everyone else worried about the score. Here's your qb controversy:

It's Gatewood's final season at Auburn.

I hope not. If he is on schedule to graduate in 3 years, he might stay next year , graduate and have 2 more years to play at another school.

However, with him not seeing the field at all yesterday against his home state team has to be a major disappointment. Can’t understand why Gus didn’t use him at least on a few of the 3rd and short plays to get the 1st downs AU desperately needed.

He'd look great in the UF offense with Mullen's ability to develop and utilize QBs.  I'm pulling for JG to find somewhere that can develop him.

Respectfully,

Gatewood is riding pine all game (or most of it) because Gus does not want a QB controversy.  Gatewood will be a nice complimentary piece to our offense, but will NEVER be put in a position to appear to be a viable alternative to Nix.  That's the last thing we want -  to shake the confidence of Nix to his core.

And Gus is right for playing it out like this.

Gatewood, while effective within his limited QB skill set, is never going to be the offensive leader that Nix is.  And Gus knows it, so he guards against any hint of a QB controversy.

Look, I understand you Gatewood lovers.  He's a good player, within certain boundaries.  But Nix clearly outplayed him in fall camp.  Nix is, and deserves to be, the unquestioned starter.  But he's a freshman, bound to make some freshman mistakes, and deserves to make them without having to look over his shoulder all the time at an oncoming Gatewood.

Gus has (rightly) put all AU eggs into the Nix basket.  Accept it and move on.

No bo don’t deserve play while struggling aka “sucking” Marlon Davidson&Derrick Brown deserve for the head coach to do everything he can to do to win every drive every situation KJ Britt could’ve got paralyzed on the the helmet to helmet Gus can’t look that man in the eye and say he tried everything losing is losing weather bo or jg

I am too, after the 2020 season! If he did  leave and AU doesn’t sign any additional QBs for 2020, it would be a disaster if Bo was hurt.

I think you quoted the wrong post, this is like an entirely different argument you’re making

but I do agree with what you’re saying, even if Bo had some latent talent that was waiting to explode, we (the recruiting class, Gus, the experience laden defense, the OL) needs a title contending season ASAP. And Gus should’ve been worrying about THAT...not if Bo can pull off something he wasn’t showing you the entire first half. A middling QB performance, the worst healthy Sean White performance, wins you that game. Joey could’ve threw 4 times that second half and won us that game. Win the damn game and figure out Bo’s fragility over the fall break

A loss to LSU would be 5 out of 7 years lost, with all but this year them being essentially down. Not sure he survives that unless he runs the table on the rest of the schedule.

A lot of people are suggesting how that Florida team would look with Joey. I think we’ll have a parallel world of Cam’s career if that were to occur. Mullen made Feliepe look like a SEC QB. Trask looked like 2019 Burrow and ripped our secondary with one leg. Emory even did well coming in cold

I don’t think he can afford to lose to anyone truthfully, I think its 10 wins or you’re gone and this program just isn’t getting up to play 4 quarters unless a title is on the line. We’ve seen it every time they lose early in November. We haven’t split Amens corner since most of these guys were in elementary so that’s all or nothing too

True, but he hasn't been groomed to play QB in Gus' offense.

Or Nick Marshal with Robinson and Prosch blocking and Mason at RB and Coates taking the top off defenses and...well you get the picture.

I guess you missed this report but I'm sure you know more than his own teammates anyway so no worries.

for those asking should bo be benched during a game like this imo no he shouldn't , talk about confidence "shot" you pull a QB during a bad game then what happens the next game when hes playing somewhat better and throws an int, fumbles, takes a sack, etc you can bet hes saying "I wonder if hes going to bench me again"

Link to post

I don't think anyone is saying he should for sure be benched. I think most are saying Joey deserves at least a chance so see what he can do while at the very least give Nix a breather and let him clear his head for a minute. Some people act like they would rather see Auburn lose than see Gatewood get a shot to see if he can help and I don't understand that logic.

People on here saying they know the limitations on a QB they've never even seen cut loose is laughable. Especially when the very small sample size we have seen he's look great. Truth is no one knows what's going to happen when JG is cut loose under the lights in front of a live crowd. Not you, not me, not Gus not even Joey himself.
