fans leaving the game early

The offensive performance (scheme, play calls, player evaluation, substitution patterns, player development, etc.) against Ole Miss is the kind of thing that will crush recruiting.

They will take conversations from the living room and translate it to what they watch others as well as themselves experience on the field. Owen Pappoe gave a fantastic pregame interview yesterday, and his main point, repeated, was how much having playing time consistently has helped his confidence and skill.  I now understand that their minds naturally work so differently than my own. They want to play, not just earn a degree. WE know the benefit, long-range, of the latter, we're past 18-23. They want what they have every right to believe a scholarship will offer them.

Weather forecasts are available 10 days I'm advance.  Plan accordingly.

The kids are trying their hardest.  They dont call the plays.

That's fine.  Doesn't mean fans are obligated to sit around and watch the bad play calling.

As fans, you have two options to voice displeasure at what you're seeing: boo or empty seats.  Don't get mad at people for not liking the product they are paying for and choosing to do something else with their time.

As for the weather, I realize forecasts are available.  Doesn't change the fact that the fan base is full of Southerners who don't do cold well.  I fully remember the 2000 Iron Bowl where people were literally giving away tickets because of the weather being cold/sleet.

Yeah people started leaving when they thought we were about to run away with it.  I've never left a game early because every minute in that stadium watching my Tigers is my happy place.

This was what I was about to say.  Leaving a home game early is not a new phenomenon that just happened because of Gus.  It appeared that Auburn was about to put that game away in the middle of the 3rd quarter when it was 20-7.  I imagine most people decided that was good enough and headed for the exits.  I know so was pretty confident it was on its way to being a blowout.  I don’t know how anyone can complain about the offensive calls last night.  Normally when Auburn out gains their opponents like that it’s a 30 point win.  Missed FGs and ill timed fumbles kept 20 points off the board.

I agree with that.......I sat the entire game during a few Bowden/Brother Oliver embarassments.....also the 93 blow out of New Mexico State game, that I believe was actually colder with more wind than the 93 Iron Bowl........with that said thats me, the ticket holder has the right to leave at their choosing.

There are several reasons to leave a night game besides not liking what you see in the field. Some of the reasons have been posted in this or the post game thread. Students are local of course but when you buy tickets ahead of time you don't have a clue when the kickoff will be. Some could have a long drive and pardon me for saying this but a 6 point win over this Ole Miss team is disappointing no matter how you look at it. People have church, jobs or babysitters to get home to and many of them may have left early no matter what was going on on the field.

Then sell your tickets to someone who can stay. Excuses are like buttholes...

I dont know what the issue could have been other than  a lack of support. We have some fair weather fans layely and it's getting to be nauseating. I bet that really impressed the recruits/commits who were there for visit. Good job!

I wish I could take my family to Auburn for a home game and enjoy the atmosphere and the history. To me it doesn't matter how much you disagree with the coach, our kids put it all on the line every game, we could at least support them.

I stayed until the very end, with my 83 year old Dad. First let me say that fan apathy was thick in the air even before kickoff. The stadium was oddly quiet, and not enthusiastic. As for the booing before half, it was not a majority of fans, but seemed just a few. Fans do it much more in other stadiums. I've heard GA fans boo their team relentlessly, but has never seemed to hurt their recruiting. Personally I wasn't displeased with the running out of the clock, but was flabbergasted by the fact that Gus throws a swing pass on first down, and then decides to run out the clock. If you're going to run out the clock just down the dadgum football. I once saw Alabama lose a game to us that they had no business losing by throwing a swing pass that resulted in a fumble allowing us to kick a last second field goal to win. I didn't boo however, because I personally just don't do that sort of thing.

As for leaving early, it wasn't just students. I sit in the upper deck, and it was clearing out fairly rapidly  in the early fourth quarter for whatever reason. I think much of it had to do with the wind, accompanied by what I perceive as disdain for the results we have witnessed from the offense. As I stated my Dad, and I stayed until the end, but believe me if he had said at any time he was cold, and wanted to leave we would have done so. I couldn't care less what anyone thinks about it either.

Out of reactions; love your post.  I would think, before I weighed in on this subject, that first-hand accounts of the what and the why be given special consideration.  Like EagleEye67, you have painted a picture from which people can draw the conclusions they will. It's hard to imagine when you aren't there.  I am sorry for the effect on the players, and I doubt I would have booed, but it is asking a lot to make generalized requirements when everyone's situation is different.

The rarity of such an occurrence at Auburn points to a problem.  Blame it on the weather, the performance, the "fans' bad attitudes"...it points to a problem, a widespread one.  Like our present situation, it's a mix of it all.

"Should have planned for the cold" in other posts... That is so easy to say from a living room couch, finger pointed at myself, too.  I like to have frozen at an AU/OleMiss game a few years back, Military Appreciation Night that night, too.  You can't prepare for the direction of the wind, nor can you say what another person has the freedom of choice to do, based upon their situation.

Well since I'm in the same boat as you I don't have tickets to sell. I didn't say anything about excuses since they are not always justifiable. I said reasons which are justifiable. For the record I haven't left an Auburn game at Jordan Hate early when I gave gone. I just don't put everyone who might leave under the "bad fan" umbrella.

It was a sloppy, boring game.

We are much better than Ole Miss, but didn’t show it.

Ole Miss is not a big draw.

It was cold.

It was windy.

It’s easier to watch at home.

Students sometimes leave early, particularly frat boys. I hate it but...

There is general apathy around the program. Say it with me: Gus Malzahn.

my opinion, tho a bad look, it’s your money. Leave when you want. It certainly shows the PTBs (pass the biscuits, btw!) that we want more than 8-4.

The world would be a much better place if people learned to mind their own business. Personally, I've only ever left one game in my life early. 1983 Texas. We were playing like crap, and it was 800 degrees. Couple that with the fact I had an incredible hangover, and we left at halftime.

Almost a carbon copy account of our situation in the upper deck.  The row in front of us cleared out after halftime.  Steady stream of people leaving continued throughout the third quarter.  We all noticed it.

The student section of course was the most noticeable.  As a recent graduate of the student section lol, I can assure you we are aware ten-day forecasts exists.  We also do not check them 99% of the time because...who does that at 18-22 years old?  And most likely, this is how most of the student evacuation happened:

Date who thinks an orange skirt with boots will keep her warm in 40 degree weather: I'm coooollllddd.

Repeat this scenario for a good quarter and a half...

Someone in the group finally leaves.  Guys don't want to be dateless for the rest of the night/don't want to be a d-bag and let their dates leave alone.

Mass exodus.  It's not that complicated and not necessarily a sign of interior turmoil. 🤣  Although, yes, that was a manure show out there and I envy those who did decide to go get warm early.

Before anyone who might be unaware fusses---PTB is one you want to listen to, not run off.  That is all.  :jossun: :zapbama:

If I had learned to then, I might now, several decades removed. Always under or overdressed. Never check.  Shame on me, but true.   EXCELLENT point...and great post.

I get most are mad at CGM and want to vent or show their displeasure but it is totally unacceptable to boo at any home game. I dont give 2 rats behind the excuses or trying to rationalize the reasons. These young men deserve the best we have to offer them. The rhetoric has now gone way too far on these boards, twitter or where ever its is being posted. Those of you who take part in it, shame on you! And I really dont give a damn who disagrees

Who in the blue hell are you to tell someone what they can do with their tickets?  Please tell me. I pay for them with the money I work for. So again please tell me who you are to be able to tell another person that they should sell tickets that they paid for? I can burn my tickets if i want. Their mine.

I was at the game and was shocked at how many people left at/ near halftime. The booing I think was more at GM then the players. Maybe fans did not dress appropriately for the game as it was cold. The 4 young kids in front of me all 12 under only had t-shirts and shorts on. Did not see them after halftime.

I'm just reading all these accounts of the weather with envy.  It's actually FALL up there! ....so jealous.  Guess Auburn can move it's home games to Tampa, I suppose.  It's still 85° w/ 90% humidity down here.

As for tickets and such?  I can't believe people are actually telling other people how to spend their own money.  So football fans are pushing for socialism now too?  Jeez.

Proof that the (offensive) football stinks is that nobody's even talking football.   Much like the last 2 or 3 actually fun threads Tora's created, 90% of this forum should be moved to All Things Considered or Politics.

Y'all have fun.  Wake me when the actual coaching search begins.

War Eagle....I guess.

Fella, it's about supporting the team. Clearly you are over reacting. Calm down before you have a stroke. You are a prime example of knee jerk reactors
