Auburn baseball expected to sign another impressive class

AUBURN, Alabama—Coming off the first College Baseball World Series appearance for the program since 1997, Coach Butch Thompson and the Auburn Tigers are expecting to sign another stellar recruiting class for 2020 with more than 10 players expected to ink with the program in the coming days. 

Leading the way is six-foot-three shortstop Werner Blakely from Detroit, Michigan. One of the top prep infielders in the country, the left-handed hitter has tools and as much upside as anyone in the country. That could make him a draft risk when the time comes next summer.

Another talented infielder expected to sign with Auburn is Pearl River (Miss.) Community College freshman Bryson Ware. Originally from Germantown High in Madison, Mississippi, Ware is a 6-2, 190-pounder heading into his first season at PRCC. With power potential and a good glove, Ware has the potential to play very early with the Tigers.

Also signing to play on the infield for the Tigers is John Griffin Bell from Faith Academy in Mobile. A 5-11, 175-pounder, Bell is perhaps the best defender in the class and helped his school win a 5A state title as a junior. He’s also a key part of an undefeated football team heading into the second round of the playoffs.

A pitcher with the ability to play first base, 6-2 left-hander Cam Hill from Bob Jones High is one of the top players in Alabama for the 2020 class and will be signing with the Tigers. As a junior he was 7-3 on the mound with a 1.71 ERA. He added eight home runs at the plate with a .379 average.

Also from Alabama, Chelsea High School big man Carter Frederick is another player who could do multiple things for the Tigers. A corner outfielder, the 6-4, 225 Frederick is also a powerful right-handed pitcher and could get a shot to do both once he gets to Auburn.

Capable of playing a corner infield spot or in the outfield, 6-3 Garrett Martin is the latest McLennan (Texas) Junior College standout to sign with the Tigers. Originally from Denver, Colorado, Martin had a strong freshman season with a .421 average, seven home runs and seven stolen bases.

A true outfielder with the ability to play any of the three spots, 5-11 Bobby Pierce from South Mountain (Arizona) Community College is another player with power potential joining the Auburn program. As a freshman he batted .315 with eight home runs and 44 RBI and also added eight doubles and four triples.

Rounding out the position players is Ben Schorr from Columbus (Georgia) High. A 6-1, 205 catcher, Schorr committed to Auburn during his sophomore season and should add to what is a strong position for the Tigers when he gets on campus. Coming from an athletic family, Schorr’s older brother played golf at Mercer and older sister played soccer at Alabama.

Thompson and his staff also did what looks to be an impressive job of rounding up future talent for the mound with five full-time pitchers joining the 2020 class. From Wicksburg High near Dothan, 6-0, 218 lefty Kade Snell was a first-team all-state performer as a junior. With an improving fastball and a strong breaking ball, Snell chose Auburn over South Alabama.

A strong right-hander from New Albany, Ohio, 6-4, 180 Jack Sokol is expected to sign with Auburn following a dominant junior season. One of the top players in Ohio, Sokol was 8-1 with a 1.04 ERA last year. It was the first loss of his career.

Coming on strong following a big junior season and summer, 6-1, 185 Carson Swilling from Smiths Station High is another potential weekend starter down the road, but has the stuff to come in and potentially be a closer for the Tigers. He also considered Arkansas and Clemson.

Playing mostly infield during his freshman season at San Jacinto (Texas) Junior College, 6-0, 180 Chase Wilkerson is expected to be a pitcher when he get to Auburn in 2020. The Headland, Alabama native threw just seven innings last year, but struck out 13 and went 1-0 while allowing just one hit.

Rounding out the class is 6-0, 180 right-hander John Armstrong from Harrison High in Marietta, Georgia. Dropping down with a lower arm angle, Armstrong could give Thompson another sidearm pitcher to bring out of the bullpen down the road for the Tigers.
