AUBURN, Alabama — Gus Malzahn's future does not appear to be in danger at Auburn.

The athletics administration has had zero discussions about Malzahn's future, sources tell Auburn Undercover.

On Friday, athletics director Allen Greene voiced support for Malzahn, adding that he loves the Tigers' coaching staff.

"We've had one of the toughest schedules in the country," Greene said Friday outside an Auburn University Board of Trustees meeting. "We've been competitive in every one of those games. Our focus right now is on Samford, on Alabama in the Iron Bowl and recruiting. Our whole focus right now is finishing out the season on a strong and high note, and then focusing on reloading for next year."

Malzahn's future has been at the center of discussions amongst boosters in each of the last two seasons. Some have discussed avenues to lead to Malzahn's ouster as Auburn's coach, which failed in 2018, only one year into the coach's new $49 million deal. Murmurs surfaced again following a loss to rival Georgia last week.

"I love our coaching staff, I love our players," Greene said. "The more chance I get to spend with them, you start to realize what great Auburn men they are and they represent the university in a first-class manner. They compete no matter what the scoreboard says."

Malzahn has faced arguably the toughest schedule in the country during his seventh season leading the program. The Tigers have faced five ranked opponents, including four currently ranked in the top 11 of the College Football Playoff rankings. Auburn is 1-3 against those teams, with the lone win a 27-21 comeback in the season opener against Oregon, which is ranked No. 6 today.

Auburn is set to face No. 5 Alabama on Nov. 30 at Jordan-Hare Stadium. He is coming off a 21-14 loss to No. 4 Georgia, which led the Tigers 21-0 in the fourth quarter, last week.

Malzahn is 60-30 overall as Auburn’s head coach, including five straight seasons with four losses or more heading into the end of the 2019 season. Auburn is ranked No. 15 in the College Football Playoff rankings and sits out 7-3 overall entering an FCS game against Samford on Saturday. The Tigers host No. 5 Alabama on Nov. 30 at 2:30 p.m. CT on CBS.

A point of contention for some Auburn fans is Malzahn’s record against rivals Alabama, Georgia and LSU. He is a combined 6-14 against the rivals, but is also the only currently sitting coach in the SEC with more than one win against Nick Saban at Alabama.

Malzahn is also 2-4 in bowl games, with wins against Memphis in the 2015 Birmingham Bowl and Purdue in the 2018 Music City Bowl.

Malzahn has won the SEC Western Division twice in his seven seasons, but his best season leading the program is his first as the head coach. He led the best turnaround in college football history by leading the Tigers to a 12-2 record, an SEC title and a runner-up finish in the BCS national championship. The Tigers lost 34-31 to Florida State on a touchdown pass with 13 seconds remaining.

The Tigers reached the SEC Championship in 2017 after upsetting then-No. 1 Georgia and then-No. 1 Alabama in the final month of the season, but injuries, particularly to starting running back Kerryon Johnson, slowed the Tigers in the rematch against Georgia in the SEC Championship and Auburn lost to the Bulldogs. Alabama and Georgia went on to meet in the national championship, with Alabama rallying to win the national title.

Auburn president Steven Leath helped negotiate a new seven-year, $49 million deal for Malzahn following the victories against Georgia and Alabama in 2017. Athletics director Jay Jacobs was on his way out and was not involved in negotiations. Meanwhile, Malzahn used interest from Arkansas as leverage in the contract negotiations, which landed him a deal promising him 75 percent of the deal should he be fired.

Leath was ousted as president in the summer.

Malzahn’s buyout today stands north of $27 million. The coach would owe Auburn $7 million if he choose to leave Auburn for another job in college football.

Auburn and Alabama are the only teams from the SEC West to reach the SEC Championship since 2013.
