It's extremely annoying Allen Greene supports Gus Malzahn: 'I love our coaching staff' AUBURN, Alabama — Gus Malzahn's future does not appear to be in danger at Auburn. The athletics administration has had zero discussions about Malzahn's future, sources tell Auburn Undercover. On Friday, athletics director Allen Greene voiced support for Malzahn, adding that he loves the Tigers' coaching staff. "We've had one of the toughest schedules in the country," Greene said Friday outside an Auburn University Board of Trustees meeting. "We've been competitive in every one of those games. Our focus right now is on Samford, on Alabama in the Iron Bowl and recruiting. Our whole focus right now is finishing out the season on a strong and high note, and then focusing on reloading for next year." Malzahn's future has been at the center of discussions amongst boosters in each of the last two seasons. Some have discussed avenues to lead to Malzahn's ouster as Auburn's coach, which failed in 2018, only one year into the coach's new $49 million deal. Murmurs surfaced again following a loss to rival Georgia last week. "I love our coaching staff, I love our players," Greene said. "The more chance I get to spend with them, you start to realize what great Auburn men they are and they represent the university in a first-class manner. They compete no matter what the scoreboard says." Malzahn has faced arguably the toughest schedule in the country during his seventh season leading the program. The Tigers have faced five ranked opponents, including four currently ranked in the top 11 of the College Football Playoff rankings. Auburn is 1-3 against those teams, with the lone win a 27-21 comeback in the season opener against Oregon, which is ranked No. 6 today. Auburn is set to face No. 5 Alabama on Nov. 30 at Jordan-Hare Stadium. He is coming off a 21-14 loss to No. 4 Georgia, which led the Tigers 21-0 in the fourth quarter, last week. Malzahn is 60-30 overall as Auburn’s head coach, including five straight seasons with four losses or more heading into the end of the 2019 season. Auburn is ranked No. 15 in the College Football Playoff rankings and sits out 7-3 overall entering an FCS game against Samford on Saturday. The Tigers host No. 5 Alabama on Nov. 30 at 2:30 p.m. CT on CBS. A point of contention for some Auburn fans is Malzahn’s record against rivals Alabama, Georgia and LSU. He is a combined 6-14 against the rivals, but is also the only currently sitting coach in the SEC with more than one win against Nick Saban at Alabama. Malzahn is also 2-4 in bowl games, with wins against Memphis in the 2015 Birmingham Bowl and Purdue in the 2018 Music City Bowl. Malzahn has won the SEC Western Division twice in his seven seasons, but his best season leading the program is his first as the head coach. He led the best turnaround in college football history by leading the Tigers to a 12-2 record, an SEC title and a runner-up finish in the BCS national championship. The Tigers lost 34-31 to Florida State on a touchdown pass with 13 seconds remaining. The Tigers reached the SEC Championship in 2017 after upsetting then-No. 1 Georgia and then-No. 1 Alabama in the final month of the season, but injuries, particularly to starting running back Kerryon Johnson, slowed the Tigers in the rematch against Georgia in the SEC Championship and Auburn lost to the Bulldogs. Alabama and Georgia went on to meet in the national championship, with Alabama rallying to win the national title. Auburn president Steven Leath helped negotiate a new seven-year, $49 million deal for Malzahn following the victories against Georgia and Alabama in 2017. Athletics director Jay Jacobs was on his way out and was not involved in negotiations. Meanwhile, Malzahn used interest from Arkansas as leverage in the contract negotiations, which landed him a deal promising him 75 percent of the deal should he be fired. Leath was ousted as president in the summer. Malzahn’s buyout today stands north of $27 million. The coach would owe Auburn $7 million if he choose to leave Auburn for another job in college football. Auburn and Alabama are the only teams from the SEC West to reach the SEC Championship since 2013. What do you guys think? Genuine support or master line-walker? I am sure he loves the coaching staff and the players.. he mentioned our schedule and how tough it was.. maybe that will be an excuse for 1 more year. On the other hand, maybe he is waiting until the season is over to evaluate everything.
WalkingCarpet 1,379
You can't dump on a guy while the season is ongoing and the biggest game is looming. That said, I think we'll have Gus next year because nobody wants to stick their neck out there and pay $26 million to get rid of a guy that half the fanbase can still tolerate. And also because I'm used to being disappointed.
oracle79 3,569
Greene hasn't been here for the last 7 years, so I'll give him a slight pass on this.
aubietiger14 147
He said he loves the coaching staff but didn't mention anyone on that staff specifically. The article didn't read as Greene was committed to anyone on the staff.

I’m sorry you had to go through that with you ex. I think the issue with Auburn and Malzhan is similar to a divorce in that, economically, it would not make sense to divorce Malzhan at this time. The BOT, even though *the money is there* is willing to support our coaching staff and see if things can be worked out. There doesn’t seem to be a marriage counselor that is non-bias enough for Gus to go see, sooooo we appear to be headed into 2020 with Gus as the head coach (sigh). The sentence about recruiting is telling. Maybe we are just going through the 7 year itch. If we get rid of him in 2021, is that what would be known as *2020 hindsight*? fredst 9,064
This all boilerplate talk. Gus may not get fired but nothing in those quotes from Greene comes across as unequivocal support for Malzahn.
SuperAUsome09 727
I think he's playing caution. Greene is tight spot being a relatively "new" AD at Auburn. Potentially his first major decision is to replace a coach with a huge buyout and decide the best course of action next. Yeah, I'm glad that's not my decision with everyone's eyes on me. Thanks..."you know who ex-prez".... On the flip side, too much caution is to the detriment of a leader. Hesitate too much and you find yourself with irreparable damage. I have my opinions of course, but my salary doesn't equate to those making these decisions 😂
DAG 33,852
I have a feeling the tough schedule everyone is referencing will save him.
Tiger 8,801
Greene saw how a hasty move fast tracked Leath's demise with the $49M contract and how another hasty move almost was his undoing with how Leath wanted to get rid of Bruce Pearl. It's better that he gave a vague comment of support for Gus (and staff) while the season still has a few weeks left IMO rather than being hyper emotional about it. TigerTale 357
There's still 2 games left in the season and Gus has a 7-3 record. One is a sure win and the other a huge rivalry game. No need to rock the boat now when the regular season ends in 8 days.

Auctoritas 2,826
I have a feeling a lot of people are going to be extremely disappointed and angry. It ain't happening this year. If he wins 9 or 10, no chance he's fired. If he wins 9 or 10 next year, no chance he's fired. I saw in another thread someone hoping that Greene was doing his job and not letting the BOT/PTB meddle. I wonder if that sentiment continues if the AD makes a cool-headed decision to stay the course. I personally want the AD to love Auburn, but I don't want him to be an Auburn fan. Whatever decision is made. (Meaning, as @Tiger said, not making decisions in a hyper emotional state)

Yup, Greene's smart enough to know that he can't say something damaging in case we win out and get to 9-3.

eaglenest 330
from what I took from this was that he never mention the man in charge [coaching staff] sharp, but, it comes a time where the use of the student athlete excuse is not going to cut it, I need true business decision answers. I do understand the optics at play here, but it will come a time one way or the other that a decision will have to be made, I just hope the hole is not any deeper then it already is. far_away_fan 101
I'm not seeing anything that says support or seems like support CGM. I have said numerous times in the Army that I loved my unit, but had a piss poor first sergeant or company commander.
steeleagle 2,945
I read it, and I don't think it's telling in either direction, which tells me his comments are NOT a 'Gus will be our coach next year'. I think Greene gave a 'overall' view of the program without having to show his cards on Gus. Saying that...I do agree that Gus will be here JUST bc of the buyout. 27 mill and on a contract that is only it its second year is not a recipe to fire the coach right now. If we lose to Alabama, then I believe the hourglass will be turned over as Greene gets set to evaluate his progress and his team in 2020.
