Still learning over here. Mind elaborating? Is this Maverick telling Goose I told you so?

But hey follow @JwgreDeux, that's what I do especially when I'm curious about who 's playing. And if you ever want to talk about more technical stuff you know I'll offer my opinion so we can always talk.

As i have mentioned, i am a baseball player--so my observations are made as an observer who played intramural.

1.  Defense is our strength and will carry us as far as we can go.

2. Free throw shooting is our weakness and unless improved will  cost us more than one or two games.

3. Wiley never needs to put the ball on the floor.  His hands are getting better but he is still losing the battle underneath power wise going up with the ball.  It seems He has problems finishing at the Rim and seldom gets the basket if impeded.

4. Doughty is attitude ! But he might get us a technical before the year is over.  He also needs to quit celebrating his accomplishments at the goal and get back on defense.

5. Bruce mentioned the bench and it's improvement.  The quicker the better and the stronger this team will be.

6. 3 point shooting is somewhere between last night and previous games, but we do not need to heave up as many.  If we find favorable matchups drive that ball!!  We have the men to do it.

Furman may not be a tournament team, but they are a solid team.  Good excellent defense with some pure shooters and good coach.

Made free throws don't win every game, only the close ones....need to improve; but Bruce and the player know that too...right now have more confidence with Austin at the line then Samir....WDE!!!

I think the returning core still has lapses where they play like they would last year, and I feel like that has become infectious for some of the youngins. We have some specialists but those guys havent showed up yet for us to just try to shoot out of a cold spell

There are only 10 undefeated teams left in all of D1 and SMU is down 49-26 at half. Will probably wake up to single-digit undefeated teams with Auburn being one of them. Absolutely insane!

I wasn't online during the Furman game Cole but I actually thought of you as I was yelling for our guards to throw Austin the damn ball...

He had a good game despite the awful passes.

The problem with getting the ball to Wiley is on everybody but Wiley.  He works hard gets good position and seals his man. The problem is basketball is very fluid you can only seal a guy for a very short period of time as the sealed player moved or another players drops down to help out. When the big man gets the initial seal the ball has to come then, If it does Wiley gets an easy score or he can pass to a wide open man when the crash down on him.

The two best on time passes I have seen to Wiley this year have come from Mac and not one of our guards that is a problem. Wiley gets tired as he has to constantly seal his man not get the ball and reseal him. That is physically demanding down low and wears a player out. If he gets the ball early he only has to seal once on that possession extending the amount of time he will be able to play.

He's a part of the issue. Like a wide receiver qb connection, bigs have to time their post ups, with when the entry pass can come. He had a good game and is coming on, but I would point out that his production is not coming on iso post ups. I have been calling for less of those and more getting him in pick and rolls and offensive flow, and we introduced some new actions in the Furman game that helped Wiley and our entry passers out.

One of the reasons I think we struggled in this game was trying to implement some new offensive sets. We had two new actions I don't recall seeing. One was a guard dribble handoff-weave on the wing and one was a high pick and roll with Wiley not rolling to the rim, but rather rolling to a post up spot. We struggled to pull them off smoothly, but I like the looks.

I want to clear the air on a couple things. First, I have never been down on Wiley, I just don't think we are a iso post up team. That includes Wiley's skill set (that he has shown to this point) and the guards ability to get him the ball consistently, and I still have not seen a game where we have more than two successful such iso post ups by Wiley or anyone else. Second, I suggested Wiley could be better utilized and much more productive if we found ways to get him in the offensive flow and for him to focus on diving to the goal and rebounding. I think we have done that as he has posted better numbers, so....

I hope everyone's post Turkey nap was as full of sweet basketball dreams as mine was. I was having visions of break away dunks and double digit victories and it's tempting to allow that to become the new expectation, but the Furman team coming to town is not one to take lightly. Furman returns most of their starters and production from an NIT team a season ago. They are balanced scoring team with 5 guys averaging 9+ points per game and get a lot of production from deep. They shoot almost 30 3s per game (8th in the country) and make 10 (21st in the country). Mounce (6'7" wing) is their best shooter at nearly 45% from 3, we should really focus in on him defensively. The other guys that makes them go are Gurley (6'8" Post) and Lyons (5'11" guard). When these three all score 10+ points they don't lose. They are a high percentage shooting team from 2, shooting at 56% (top 25 in country) and get up an above average number of attempts, playing at a slightly above average pace. They don't attack the basket, and I don't expect them to challenge our bigs at the rim, they will likely settle for jump shots, hopefully our defense makes them contested ones.

Where they struggle most as a team is rebounding the ball. They are outside the top 200 in offensive and defensive rebounding, as well as outside the top 200 in offensive rebounding % and outside the top 100 in defensive rebounding %. To date we have done a good job rebounding, and have been very good on the offensive glass. I would look for us to attack the basket and challenge their rim protectors (only averaging 2 blocks per game) and crash the glass. Once we do this I think we will be able to move the ball pretty well and get most of the shots we want. On offense limiting our turnovers will be key, as Furman has been generating 18+ per game. We need to be around the 12-13 mark in this game, fewer would obviously be even better.   They are small as a team with only 7 guys getting double digit minutes. 3 guys are all 6'7''-ish, a couple of 6'4'' - ish guys, and a pair of guards who are 5'11,'' their defensive effort is dependent on getting steals and creating turnovers.

Keys to the game:

  • Defend the 3pt shot, especially Mounce
  • Limit our turnovers, they are small and will likely double the post on entry passes, so our bigs need to limit TOs as well as our guards.
  • Rebound the ball, especially on the offensive end.
  • Weather a run. With a team like Furman who jacks up 30 3s, at some point they are likely to string a couple together, we need to be mentally ready to weather that and not get tempted to just jack up 3s of our own (unless they are good open looks).
  • Take advantage of our depth. I'd like to see us push the pace and really take advantage of our athleticism and depth.

Here we go. A game I definitely expect to win, and should win comfortably unless we hurt ourselves. Capable team in Furman, but nothing we shouldn't be able to handle. War Eagle!

Say what you want about Bama, but they have talent, and Furman didn't play well in the game, only shooting 30% from the floor and 26% from three. Despite that the led in the second half and were only down 5 with under a minute to play. They would have won that game if they hit another shot or two before they had to start fouling. Don't sleep on this team. We are better for sure, but they are capable of pushing us and beating us if we sleep walk.

One reason I don't think that will happen, is the amount of time we have before and after this game. I think it allows us to do a lot of game specific work just for this game to avoid any let down.

Well, I tried to warn about this Furman team, and possible hangover. I was optimistic we would avoid it, and we were fortunate to get the W. A couple of observations:

  • We did not defend the 3 well (they shot 41% and many were open shots)
  • We did not limit our turnover (19)
  • We did crash the glass and that pretty much won us the ball game +20!!! on the boards
  • We did weather the run. I expected them to go on a run or two, not to the extent they did, but we kept calm and responded to get the win from down 14.
  • There were a few new sets we experimented with that I don't remember seeing before. There were two variations of a guard hand-off/weave we used early to drive the ball, and there was a pick n post set that we used to try and get Wiley in a good post position off of a pick and roll. I liked the designs but we did not run them flawlessly early.
  • We allowed their big three to all score double digits and somehow got the win. I think this is the first time Furman lost when that happened.
  • Wiley played his best game, posting season bests in turnovers 0, Minutes 29, assists 2, blocks 2, steals 2, and also scored 13 with 12 rebs. He now has double digit scoring in his last 5 games and has 3 double doubles in that stretch. (Before this stretch he had 3 double doubles in his AU career).  His best play has come in these games, and it seems CBP is finding ways to start maximizing his fit with this team.

There is a lot to criticize about that game, the shooting, the turnovers, the haze we played with for a while, but teams have bad games. A long layoff, finals, turkey hangover, who knows but as long as it doesn't become a trend I'm not going to get too concerned about it (I'd feel the same way even if we lost this game). A concern I took from this game is the lack of a steadying presence on the court. We don't have a guy/leader yet that the rest look at to steady the group. Wiley and Okoro's production seemed to provide a collective calm as the game went on, but we are still watching a team with new roles figure it out. We will need someone to take that role if we want another deep post season run. You can beat these schools by out-tallenting them, something AU programs of the past couldn't, but we won't do that in conference or post season.

War Eagle!

So I wanted to take a real close look at how Austin scored against Furman, and not just go off memory so I took a second look :

First half scoring:

8:53 - made free throw after a high pick and roll with Samir, Wiley rolled caught a nice pass and a defender tried to take a charge in the restricted area and got a block call. (1)

3:58 mark - basket off offensive rebound (26-30) (3)

end of half, AU trailing (31-39)

Second half scoring:

19:00 mark second half - Makes a free throw after being fouled. He got good post up position on the middle/left side of the paint and Purifoy made a good entry pass, Furman doubled from the corn wing opposite the ball and almost got the steal, instead got a foul call and two free throws. (32-42) (4)

3:23 - Wiley scores on a layup. He caught the ball at the free throw line after Purifoy got a catch on the block. Wiley caught the ball facing the hoop took one power dribble absorbed contact and got the bucket. No foul call as a defender attempted to flop on a charge. (60-63) (6)

2:55 - Wiley gets post position immediately as we dribble down the court off a made free throw. Purifoy and J'von have a screen and flare with J'von passing to Purifoy at the high wing, who makes a long post entry pass to Wiley, who sealed his man catches and dunks. (62-64) (8)

OT

3:14 - Wiley and J'von run a pick and roll/post at the top of the key, Wiley rolls to post up and gets good position and J'von gets the the ball. Wiley takes a short jump hook and misses but gets his own board and scores it and gets fouled and makes the free throw. (11)

0:57 Wiley gets fouled going for an offensive rebound and knocks down both free throws. (13)

So he generated his offense (either made buckets or free throws) from 2 pick and rolls, 2 offensive rebounds (not counting the 3:14 mark as it was generated off a pick and roll), 2 post up isos, 1 high post catch. On all shots he was in good close proximity to the hoop, not one was he moving away from the basket. The majority of his contributions came in the flow of the offense and rebounding (5 such touches), only 2 iso post ups resulted in points. Wiley has done a good job of getting better position and staying closer to the hoop. He also has done a better job with ball security and turnovers, which was one area I have been critical of him. It is important to note 9 of his points came after McLemore fouled out down the stretch and in OT.

Honestly think the team can win out the non conference schedule but Jamal Johnson needs too have a bigger role in the offense in order to win the bigger Sec games.

I agree to the extent we need more shooting, but where do you play him and who sits more? J'von is top 20 in the nation in assists per game, Doughty is our leading scorer, and Okoro and Cambridge are both playing well at the 3. There just arent enough minutes to go around.

I agree. Jvon has to get alot better though, and Cambridge should be much better at defense than he is. He has all the tools that he can be the best defender in the conference

Cambridge still seems like he needs to calm down, channel his energy.  When he comes in off the bench he is a spark plug but just a tad out of control.  After more game minutes he’ll start to be more effective than just some of the flash plays.

im excited about his future.  Instant energy.

Better than Okoro? I love Devan's size/wingspan/how much ground he can cover
