Walker Jr. to join Auburn staff as a grad assistant

by Jason Caldwell

AUBURN, Alabama—On Friday defensive lineman Gary Walker Jr. worked out for scouts at Auburn’s Pro Day. While he’s not expected to be playing football on Sundays in the future, his football career is far from over because he’ll be joining Coach Gus Malzahn’s staff as a defensive graduate assistant, Auburn247 has learned.

A former walk-on that earned a scholarship with the Tigers, Walker played in 23 games during his career and finished with five tackles and one fumble recovery.

On Auburn’s depth chart to open last season, Walker Jr. played both tackle and end during his career with the Tigers and has a strong legacy in the sport. The son of former Auburn All-SEC defensive tackle and longtime NFL player Gary Walker, he had something about him said Malzahn.

"Yeah, Gary Walker gives us -- first of all, he's such an Auburn man,” Malzahn said of Walker last preseason. “That's probably the best way to put it. He's tough. He's sacrificed a lot to get to this point. He's on there for a reason. He's earned that."

Walker Jr. becomes the third former Auburn player to join the off-the-field staff this offseason along with Josh Holsey (GA) and Andrew Williams (assistant strength coach).

His dad was a freaking beast. Destroyed UF's tackles in '93 and '94. Broke a QB's femur his senior yr of HS. Sounded like a gun shot throughout the stadium. Thank goodness CPD took him hunting on his official.
