Saban has all those 5 stars running around, but when he gets out-witted on something he whines like a baby till he gets it changed.  This coming from a guy who worked under the master of situational football (Belichik).  SMH.

This doesn't make any sense. If there's ANY time left, then there's time left. I hope this change bites $aban in the butt next season. He's just as likely to have two seconds left as anybody, then watch him whine.

So guess punters and QB's on the field at the same time is gonna be a no no soon huh.

No doubt!

He is the biggest crybaby! Guess he couldn’t get the rule changed that he could play with 12 players if the punter lined up at X! War Eagle- makes the victory that much sweeter! And I love that Gus tweeted about it- really got the bammers up in arms!

It figures. Saban, being the wee munchkin that he is, has had to cry and whine that things were unfair since his elementary school playground days. Nothing has changed for him. Big ego + short stature = Napoleon and Jordan Hare and Gus continues to be his Waterloo.

I’m probably in disagreement with a lot of folks on here. I think this rule change makes sense. Official review shouldn’t give you an advantage. It should just correct a mistake.

That said, in the specific circumstance of the iron bowl, Saban’s crying was stupid. Several times on that final drive of the half, they let time come off after the clock should have stopped, including the final play where Whitlow’s progress stopped 3.5 seconds before the half ended. Even with this new rule, we would have had a chance to kick if the refs had done their jobs correctly.

I would say we all agree with that. I also think we all know that the biggest reason this was looked at and changed was because that particular review didn't give Saban the advantage so he cried about it.

Also proposed but voted down was a measure to make the goal posts more “springy”.

Post of the Week !!!!!!!

So in a perfect world, next year Alabama will have a shot at a field goal to end the first half of the Iron Bowl, only to have it denied because there's only 2 seconds left on the clock after the review,  ultimately losing the game by 2.😁

Iron Bowl play leads to NCAA rule change

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved six football rules changes on Tuesday, and one of them was most likely inspired by the 2019 Iron Bowl, specifically the final play of the first half.

Starting with the next college football season, when a play that ends the half gets reviewed and the review determines that time should be restored to the clock, there must be at least three seconds remaining to restore the time. Otherwise, the half will end, even if review determines there should be one or two seconds remaining.

This rule would have changed the course of the Iron Bowl. A 17-yard reception by JaTarvious Whitlow, which moved Auburn to the 34-yard line, would have ended the half, but a review determined Whitlow was downed with one second remaining. In the time the officiating crew reestablished the line of scrimmage, Auburn had time to assemble its field-goal unit and attempt a 52-yard field goal, which Anders Carlson made.

With this rule, the officials could not have put the additional second on the clock that Auburn used to kick the field goal.

The other action related to instant replay is a guideline as opposed to a rule change, giving replay officials the expectation to complete reviews in two minutes or fewer.

One rule change allows players ejected for targeting to stay on their sidelines, as opposed to spending the rest of the game in the locker room. In the short history of the targeting rule, players have generally been escorted to the locker room by a staff member after being ejected.

The Playing Rules Oversight Panel also limited players with duplicate numbers to two. Now only two players can wear the same number, and they must play different positions and not be on the field at the same time. To give teams more flexibility with roster numbers, and as the NCAA release put it, “to respond to the popularity of single-digit numbers,” the number 0 is now permissible as a jersey number.

Finally, game officials’ jurisdiction of games now begins 90 minutes before games, an increase from the previous 60. The proposal that led to the rule also called for a coach to be on the field during pregame warmups with all players being identified by number, in hopes of limiting pregame scuffles.

This is a stupid ass rule change. What if the team that could “benefit” has a time out remaining? After review, if there is 1 second left they could call a timeout and the clock wouldn’t start until the ball is snapped, correct?

No.

e. Starts on the Referee’s Signal. For each of the following reasons, the game
clock is stopped on an official’s signal. If the next play begins with a
snap, the game clock will start on the referee’s signal:

1. Team A is awarded a first down, either through play or by penalty.
2. A Team A forward fumble goes out of bounds.
3. Other than with fewer than two minutes remaining in a half, a Team A
ball carrier, fumble or backward pass is ruled out of bounds.
4. To complete a penalty (Exception: Rule 3-4-4-c).
5. An injury timeout is allowed for one or more players or an official (A.R.
3-3-5-I-V).
6. An inadvertent whistle is sounded.
7. A possible first-down measurement.
8. Both teams cause a delay in making the ball ready for play (A.R. 3-3-1-
III).
9. A live ball comes into possession of an official.
10. A head coach requests a conference or challenges an instant-replay
decision.
11. The referee grants a media timeout.
12. The referee declares a discretionary timeout.
13. The referee declares a timeout for unfair noise (Rule 9-2-1-b-5 ).
RULE 3 / PERIODS, TIME FACTO RS AND SUBSTITUTIONS FR-51
14. An illegal pass is thrown to conserve time (A.R. 7-3-2-II-VII)
(Exception: Rule 3-4-4-c).
15. The referee interrupts the 40/25-second count.
16. A player’s helmet comes completely off through play.
17. When either team commits a dead-ball foul.
18. Violation of a rule for mandatory equipment (Rule 1-4-4) or illegal
equipment. (Rule 1-4-7)
f. Snap Supersedes Referee’s Signal. Whenever one or more incidents that cause
the game clock to be started on the referee’s signal (Rule 3-3-2-e) occur in
conjunction with any that cause it to be started on the snap (Rules 3-3-
2-c and 3-3-2-d), it shall be started on the snap. [Exception: Rule 3-4-4
(10-second runoff) supersedes this rule. (A.R. 3-3-2-VIII and -IX)]
