McLoofus 35,182
May cooler heads prevail. Quote "The option to use active-duty forces in a law enforcement role should only be used as a matter of last resort, and only in the most urgent and dire of situations. We are not in one of those situations now," Esper told reporters at a Pentagon briefing. "I do not support invoking the Insurrection Act." "I've always believed and continue to believe," Esper added, "that the National Guard is best suited for performing domestic support to civil authorities in these situations, in support of local law enforcement." https://www.npr.org/2020/06/03/868929288/pentagon-chief-rejects-trumps-threat-to-use-military-to-quell-unrest?utm_campaign=npr&utm_source=facebook.com&utm_term=nprnews&utm_medium=social&fbclid=IwAR1kEmaIwCBboQS30QdJ4ncejAemDEanvlqjip5r_VxVYe9F5Uo3ZJQskm0

I respect Mattis very much and respected his decision to remain silent after he left. But he needs to weigh the country's interest against those of the person who holds the office. In this case, there is a vast difference between the two. Obviously he has come to that conclusion.
IronMan70 3,277
It's not Sec. Esper's call to make. The Insurrection Act of 1807 has been activated 20 times from 1808-1992, most recently by JFK x 3, LBJ x 4 and GHWB x 2. This is nothing new and Esper knows that as does Mattis. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insurrection_Act_of_1807 April 19, 1808 Thomas Jefferson Lake Champlain Embargo Act violations[6] August 23, 1831 Andrew Jackson Yes Norfolk, Virginia Nat Turner's slave rebellion[11] January 28, 1834 Andrew Jackson Yes Williamsport, Maryland Labor dispute by workers on Chesapeake and Ohio Canal[12] October 17, 1871 Ulysses S. aujhw 8
You would hope some of these people start standing up to this president. People have to stand up for institutions and frankly just sanity. This president doesn’t have a clue and his instincts on this stuff could take us down a terrible road.
toddc 13,194
Y’all act like he actually sent the marines or paratroopers into a city. All he did was say if the mayors can’t stop the violence he would have that tool to use and everyone gets triggered.
homersapien 11,362
Trump backs off a lot of his threats - maybe even most of them. But that hardly means push back before the threat is executed is not important.
