This I don't understand. Sheffield was in the 2019 signing class. He was on the team in 2019. How can a 2020 recruiting slot be vacated by a guy who was signed and was on the team in 2019? How could this work?

According to NCAA Rules if a player does not finish their freshman year due to school rules violations then their spot on the 25 counter list can be replaced. I'm not sure if Loy is the replacement or an EE from the 2020 class gets it & allow Loy to count in 2020 but a spot did open up allowing us to put Loy on scholly. Otherwise Loy wouldn't have gotten a scholly offer.

It likely just opened up FWIW.

Ah, that's right, you mentioned that. Thanks for keeping me between the ditches!

Yes but....Sheffield's already completed his freshman year. That would have ended on May 1st, the last day of Spring semester finals. In any case, his slot would come off the 2019 counter list, not 2020. I'm really not trying to argue for the sake of it. Using Sheffield's 2019 slot to fill a 2020 vacancy doesn't conform to previous rulings.

If that could be done, then everybody's freshman year would simply be a tryout. Dump the guys that didn't work out and add a bunch more the next year.

Auburn adds Bowling Green grad transfer QB Grant Loy

Auburn has added another veteran presence to its quarterback room for the 2020 season.

Former Bowling Green quarterback Grant Loy, a graduate transfer, announced Wednesday afternoon that he will be finishing his career at Auburn. Loy, a redshirt junior last season, will have one year of eligibility remaining.

Loy appeared in 12 games at Bowling Green last season while making seven starts. The 6-foot-5, 233-pounder completed 56.4 percent (115-of-204) of his passes for 1,137 yards, six touchdowns and 11 interceptions but was also effective with his legs, rushing for 427 yards and four touchdowns on 100 carries. He finished the year as BGSU’s third-leading rusher and tied for the team lead in rushing scores.

Last season represented Loy’s most significant action at Bowling Green after starting his career as a walk-on. He redshirted in 2016, appeared in six games as a backup in 2017 and then played in 11 games with one start in 2018.

He brings added depth to the position for Auburn, where sophomore Bo Nix is the Tigers’ entrenched starter. Auburn also has redshirt sophomore Cord Sandberg and true freshman Chayil Garnett on scholarship, while the team also added preferred walk-on graduate transfer Caylin Newton -- the younger brother of Heisman and national champion-winning quarterback Cam Newton -- from Howard this offseason; Newton will likely spend time at both quarterback and receiver at Auburn.

i do not understand this since his numbers are kinda hanky but maybe they are just trying to help the kid with some kind of classes or something we do not know about. regardless of doubt i will pull for him while he wears the orange and blue.

He’s huge. We’ll probably use him like we were supposed to use Gatewood

More like clipboards or playcards.

We needed a backup QB. Currently we have Sandberg who must not be playing material based on this addition. And then a TF signee and a TF walk on.

Sandberg has 18 total college snaps. Add in Garnett and you still have 18 total college snaps.

This guy has almost 400 spread out over the last 3 years. He's big, athletic and experienced, even if mostly in a lower level of competition. (He's been to Oregon, Ga Tech, K State and Notre Dame. Started against 2 of them and played against all of them.) Classic insurance policy when there's so little experience behind QB1. Very unlikely that Garnett is a viable option in 2020 so I'm glad we're not rolling with just 2 guys.

Haha, sorry about that. What I really meant to say was that even if Sandberg is 1B to Bo's 1A, I like the idea of getting another backup.

Great pickup. Of Bo goes down, we have a big, athletic kid with experience. We were screwed if Bo got hurt after JG left last season, and would've been screwed this season if he went down. This signee adds a nice level of insurance.

Looks like an insurance policy in case Bo gets hurt.  I could also see him taking on the Gatewood spot as a short yardage specialist.
