Auburn 2020 Soccer Schedule

It’s cleared and that will do it. A stellar effort by UK to draw this one down a man for 110 minutes of the game. To add injury to insult, Gadson goes down with :05 to go and hobbles off. Doesn’t seem to be too bad.

In all though, a very disappointing result for Auburn who should have won this one going away. Hopefully a lesson for these young Tigers and not something they carry forward.

Thanks for the updates.  We seem a bit tougher this year than last.  Just need to score more.

Exactly. Defense is stout, but they lack a finisher or creator in the midfield. Hoping one of the young ones develop into that.

After going on the road to high-ranked Arky and losing 2-1, the Tigers decided to pile on the pain for LSU in Baton Rouge today:

AU blanked at home by a mediocre uat 1-0. Hope they can bounce back before the tournament starts. Still really, really struggling to find a consistent goal scorer.

Tough OT win over UGA tonight.

What I wouldn't give for college soccer to go the FIFA route rules wise. Everything about college soccer rules is so janky.

I know this is 2021 season but didn't want to start new thread.  OT winner on the road.

They dominated the tide.  bama scored their goal with 15 seconds left in the game and it was their only shot on goal, whereas AU had 18 shots on goal.

I was mistaken before, this is the final regular season match. Didn't realize how dominant the defense has been.

AUBURN, Ala. – Winners of four straight, Auburn (9-5-3) wraps up the regular season with a neutral-site matchup against Virginia Tech (8-8-0) Saturday in Greenwood, South Carolina.

Kickoff at Van Taylor Stadium on the campus of Lander University is set for 1:30 p.m. CT.

STARTING XI

Auburn is riding a season best four-match winning streak, marking its longest winning streak since starting the 2018 season with nine straight wins.

The Tigers have outscored opponents 12-2 this spring, having allowed just one goal in the last 383 minutes of action.

Auburn's most recent shutout came against the national leader in goals, assists and points in South Alabama.

The Tigers eight shutouts are the team's most since 2018. Another shutout would tie for the fourth most in a season in program history.

Hailey Whitaker has scored in back-to-back games and was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week after matching a career high with four points on a goal and two assists vs. South Alabama.

Virginia Tech represents Auburn's third ACC opponent it's played on the road this spring.  The Tigers are 1-1-0 against its previous two opponents in Clemson and Louisville.

Depending on Saturday's outcome, Auburn will anxiously await Monday's NCAA Tournament Selection Show at noon CT on NCAA.com.

After going 4-4-2 in SEC play in the fall, the Tigers are 5-1-1 this spring.

Head coach Karen Hoppa won her 250th game at Auburn vs. Georgia on Mar. 13.

Hoppa is one of 20 active NCAA women's soccer Division I head coaches with 300 or more career wins, including 250 or more wins at the helm of his or her current program.

SCOUTING VIRGINIA TECH

After starting the season 0-5, Virginia Tech has gone 8-3 in its last 11 contests, including 3-0 this spring.

Mooney’s second half hat trick leads Auburn past Virginia Tech

GREENWOOD, S.C. – Freshman Mallory Mooney recorded the hat trick as Auburn defeated Virginia Tech, 4-1, Saturday afternoon at Lander University's Van Taylor Stadium.

"I don't think we could've made a better statement win in our last game," head coach Karen Hoppa said. "Our team has gotten better all throughout the year and we certainly played our best soccer here against a really quality ACC team in Virginia Tech. They're an excellent program and an excellent team. To beat them 4-1 is just a huge statement about this team from Auburn deserves to be in the NCAA Tournament."

All three of Mooney's goals came in a span of 12 minutes in the second half. The freshman midfielder became the first Auburn player to record a hat trick since Casie Ramsier did so at the 2016 SEC Tournament. She matched a program record by recording the hat trick in one half.

"At halftime, we really brought the energy back," Mooney said. "I think they key was just playing more together as a team in the second half than in the second half."

"The second half, Mallory Mooney took over," Hoppa added. "What a great performance by her. Certainly her best soccer so far."

The victory marks another 10 win season for Hoppa, her 18th in 22 seasons with Auburn. It also marked the Tigers' fifth straight win to cap off the spring season 6-1-1 and was the first loss for Virginia Tech this spring.

"I appreciate the opportunity to play a really quality team in Virginia Tech at a neutral site like this," Hoppa said.

Auburn (10-5-3) surrendered its first goal in a span of more than 400 minutes as Virginia Tech (8-9-0) found the back of the net by way of the crossbar in the 28th minute.

The Tigers responded with the equalizer less than 10 minutes later. Anna Haddock served up the corner kick, and Maddie Simpson rose above the defense to head it into the back of the net. The goal was Simpson's second of the season, and the assist was Haddock's SEC leading 10th.

Goalkeeper Maddie Prohaska had another great game with seven saves, the most notable of which came from a Virginia Tech free kick in the 65th minute while the game was still tied, 1-1. This save stopped the Virginia Tech attack for the moment, and only six minutes later Auburn took the lead and never to look back.

The pace picked up in the final 25 minutes of the contest as the two teams battled to break the tie. Moments after Virginia Tech saved a pair of shots in a two-minute span, the Tigers took the lead on Mallory Mooney's goal in the 71st minute. Sydney Richards beat a pair of defenders and played it back to Mooney, who made a great run and put the one-timer into the back of the net. The goal was Mooney's third of the season.

Mooney scored two more goals in a span of minutes to put the game out of reach in the final 10 minutes of action. Olivia Candelino beat her defender and made the pass the Mooney, who beat her defender and finished. Two minutes later, Jolie Baltzegar was able to find Mooney again to record the second-half hat trick. The assist was the first of the career for Baltzegar.

Auburn's four goals were the second most in a game this season and the most against a Power 5 opponent since defeating Maryland 4-0 at the start of last season.

Auburn will await its NCAA Tournament fate as the NCAA Women's Soccer Selection Show is set for Monday at noon CT on NCAA.com.

So it looks like we missed the tournament, likely due to shortening the field to 48 this year, leaving only 19 at large spots.  Such a bummer.  This team was playing fantastic. 10 wins,  0.78 Goals allowed avg. We had a better record than several.  RPI was 40s. I think this team would have surprised.  Great thing is our leading scorers were freshmen. Bright future ahead.  Can't wait for them to make noise next year.
