Scare beat-writers and Reporters?

I am curious as to why the guys in the press conferences do not ask Gus more difficult questions. They never press for answers and they let him get by with the same crap coach speak every week. "Good week of practice" .."We are going to improve" ..."Give them credit"...."better team in our league"...."when you play in our league"  and so on. I could go all day.

I would like to hear one reporter just ask something that requires Gus to go a little deeper into the accountability.

"Gus, why has our offense struggled for literally 6 years now and you are supposed to be an Offensive guru?"

"Gus, would you say the biggest problem has been your staff's failure to recruit OL for 7 years?"

Again..so on and so on. I hear that other school in AL ask lil Nicky harder questions and they are scared to death of him.

I think they know Gus doesn't answer any questions honestly. I don't mean that Gus is a liar, I just mean that he plays everything extremely close to his vest. They know they aren't going to get anywhere with tough questions, because he won't answer the easy ones. That's just my .02.

They know Gus doesn't divulge anything even when pressed. Didn't we have one specifically ask him about dumb play calls and came with stats to back his question up a few years ago? Was it Crepea or Marcello?

They need to keep their media access so instead of asking hard or pointed questions to him they just try their best to make chicken salad articles out of chicken **** replies in pressers.

But let me tell you this, I can't wait for stories to come out when we hire a new coach "This is a change because we never even did                      under the old regime".  Or comments from the new staff being shocked at XYZ that was going on under the previous staff etc. You can tell the former players on twitter want to shed light on the struggles in the program as it is right now. But I'm very much looking forward to hearing what kind of amateur hour BS we've been subjected to for the better part of a decade. I mean apparently when Muschamp came in he was shocked at how our recruiting board was managed and made a bunch of changes. You know it all couldn't have been fixed/handled over his short stay at AU so I want to see what other stuff we hear about. The Gus era is OVER as far as I'm concerned. AU doesn't have a choice anymore. It costs more to keep him than to fire him at this point.

there was one guy that trolled gus about qb musical chair play calling during the post game interview from the clemson game in 2016 im guessing that gentleman has no longer been allowed into interviews but boy i sure would like to buy him all you can eat buffet for a whole year the way he trolled gus and called him  out on his playcalling

They don't want to lose access if they grill a coach who isn't in danger of being immediately fired. If we get flattened by the Lane Train on Saturday you might see the gloves come off a bit.

One thing Gus knows is that beat writers are loser hacks and a detriment to the team. They will write whatever they want no matter what he says or who the coach is. They are mostly bammer rejects anyway.

he barely gives them the time of day which all they should get

I would like to hear him say” we are not pleased with our qb play and we are challenging him to improve in a couple of areas. Without swift improvement we cannot win. “. The good news is that LSU sucks and we can still beat everyone except the turds.

Your OL question is a non question, like how long have you been kicking your dog? It's the sort of garbage you see "asked" on social media all the time. Dont let your frustration get in the way of common sense, "tough" questions are usually rhetorical and/or stupid.

This is exactly what I am waiting for . When the new regiment comes in then all the dirt will come out.

No...it's a legit question. Maybe it could be worded differently, but I don't care about semantics. The fact is Gus has failed miserably at OL recruiting. That is just an example of things I would like to hear his response to. My frustration has jack to do it. It's a question that should have been asked for years now.

The point of the post was to gain insight as to why reporters do not ask the tough questions that I have seen other coaches at other programs get asked. I got several answers that were helpful for me, although this was not one of them. Thanks for your response though.

Thank you. I feel like the reporter beat around the bush as much as Gus does. Maybe it isn't on them and like many have said..they just want to keep their access. I guess I am just more bothered by the fact that Gus never seems to tell it like it is and take ownership. I am glad he is a coach that sticks up for his players, but I would like to see him actually address the problems.

Access. There's a thin line they can walk without losing access to players and different information. Depends on the coach too and how they treat reporters that ask such questions.

Plus, unfortunately, a large portion of the Auburn community is still okay with this trash. They would view the harsher questions as being too mean.

Question though- and this is because I never watch pressers except the occasional Braves postgame or maybe snippets from Belicheck over the years because he's famously obtuse-

Do other press circles tree the coach more directly than Auburn's?

I’m not sure anyone who isn’t ‘controlled’ is allowed in.  It’s just like the replay and Tiger Talk; Gus is immensely shielded from negativity and scrutiny.

Why put forth the effort and risk the consequences when nobody cares? Seriously. Nobody gives a damn about Auburn football beyond broadcasters having to prop us up to sell their programming. We're probably the least interesting team in the SEC West and definitely in the bottom half of the league in that regard. Even if we were to beat bama again (we won't), it would be a "what's wrong with bama" story.

Thank you for this post.  I listen to his press conferences and he rarely answers a question directly.  His answers are always like well yea!.  He does not have answers.  I have a few questions.  Gus you said your kicking to many field goals why do not consider going for it on fourth down?

Gus you blamed the slow start on the offense to the absence of spring practice that hasn't seem to effect LSU or Alabama or Georgia. Why is Auburn different?

Gus, was the Georgia game a reflection of a failure in recruiting and what processes do you plan on implementing to ensure that does not happen again?

I have plenty more.  One reporter asked if a specific player played in the South Carolina game Gus didnt know.  Could you imagine Nick Saban not have any idea if a specific player saw playing time or not.

The truth is to answer the original post Kirk Sampson would probably remove credentials.  That said It frustrates me the media does not challenge this guys bs.

Its the same bullcrap every year.  We gotta get better, we are young, we  will improve..blah blah blah blah.  For 49 million jerk we don't want excuses we want wins.

Our own fans feel that way.  Four loss seasons, no improvements, the same excuses.  My apathy level is in the 90's 36 days till basketball tips off.

Well said. I saw a twitter post yesterday that had taken screenshots of tweets from Gus' pressers and in 6 out of the last 8 years he has said midseason "The offense is still a work in progress". It was the the summary of the Gus Era.

Add to that his comments after this game that he thought they did a good job of balancing the offense until right at the end. Huh?

27 passes in the first half and still passing with a decent lead. 47 passes and 15 runs from the QB which many of those were called pass plays too.

What he says doesn't equate on the field.

In his controlled press environments, you might get finished with your first question before being blackballed and escorted out.  Look, we're talking about a media-shielding program that doesn't even show opponents scores on the replay show.  The same program that no longer has an open line to Tiger Talk that isn't meticulously screened and rehearsed.  Everything is so generic and packaged so no negativity falls on Gus.  And most other teams programs are like that, also.

No more Shug or Bear criticizing his own shortfalls in front of tv viewers.  The review show going from an hour to 30 minutes was the worst thing that ever happened to those types of shows. Dayum I used to love watching them, for the review and the entertainment value!

So true.  What review show? Its the game highlights with the Auburn network audio and a short interview segment with Gus.  I remember when Pat Dye was in studio for 30 minutes, dittos Bowden.  Also read where Dye would visit 50 alumni clubs in his book.  Malzahn wants to do none of that.   Gus has insulated himself from the alumni and fan base so there is no connection or loyalty among Auburn people.  This is what kept Tubs employed during Jetgate.  Nobody cares about Gus.  He appears selfish, and aloof.
