Police in Minneapolis shot and killed a man during a traffic stop on the city's south side Wednesday night, stirring anxiety about renewed protests following the first police-involved death in the city since George Floyd's death while being arrested in May. CBS Minnesota reportsthe shooting scene is less than a mile from where Floyd died.

Police said the man died in an exchange of gunfire, and Chief Medaria Arradondo said witnesses said the man fired first. He said the officers' body cameras were turned on and promised to release the video on Thursday.

"I want our communities to see that so they can see for themselves," he said. Until then, Arradondo said, "Please allow me, the (state) investigators, allow us the time, let us get the evidence, get the facts, so we can process this."

Protesters demand answers in Minneapolis shooting, dozens arrested

Dozens of protesters were arrested overnight in Minneapolis as they demanded more answers into Wednesday night's fatal police shooting of 23-year-old Dolal Bayle Idd.

The protests and arrests, which were seen by a 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS crew, came after the body camera footage of the deadly traffic stop was released.

The arrests happened in downtown Minneapolis.

In south Minneapolis, about 100 people gathered at the gas station where Idd was killed to honor his life.

Some community member said the body camera video of the shooting raises more questions than answers.

Protesters also say that police should have deescalated the situation. However, Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo says his officers were reacting to a deadly threat.

The shooting happened at about 6:15 p.m. Wednesday at a Holiday gas station near East 36th Street and Cedar Avenue. Police said officers were engaged in a traffic stop when gunfire was exchanged and the suspect was struck. While police have not yet identified the man, who died at the scene, a person who said he's the victim's father identified the man as Idd.
