Good luck to him. Hope he thrives at his new school. 3-4 defense not a great fit for him in my opinion.

I'm guessing that's why he's transferring.  He doesn't want to play in a 3-4.  Will he follow DJ to FSU?

Auburn DL Big Kat Bryant, Daquan Newkirk enter transfer portal

Big Kat Bryant and Daquan Newkirk will take advantage of an extra year of eligibility, but they won't be doing so at Auburn.

An All-SEC defensive end and a starting defensive tackle at Auburn in 2020, respectively, Bryant and Newkirk announced Sunday evening they will be utilizing the NCAA's free year of eligibility and will play another season, but will be entering the transfer portal. Bryant and Newkirk shared their respective announcements within minutes of each other on social media Sunday.

"I have decided it is in my best interest to enter the transfer portal in order to weigh my options for this upcoming season," Bryant said. "I am ready to dominate. Let's go!"

A second team All-SEC pick, Bryant had three sacks and an interception this past season. He finishes his career on the Plains with 10 sacks, two forced fumbles and three picks.

Newkirk, meanwhile, started all 10 regular-season games for Auburn at defensive tackle after overcoming injury troubles earlier in his career. He did not play in Auburn's bowl game against Northwestern. Newkirk logged 28 total tackles in 2020, plus 1.5 sacks.

Both players will be graduate transfers.

"To my teammates, I will miss every one of you," Newkirk wrote. "The last three years we have created great memories. I will cherish those for the rest of my life. To Auburn, I love you guys and you'll always have a special place in my heart."

New Auburn head coach Bryan Harsin has officially hired seven of Auburn's 10 assistant coaches but has yet to name a defensive line coach. Rodney Garner has held the position since 2013 and coached both Bryant and Newkirk during their Auburn careers.

"I like him, and I really think he has the right coaching philosophy to lead this team to one day be able to win championships," Bryant said of Harsin after the Citrus Bowl. "I really do believe that."

Defensive tackle Tyrone Truesdell, who started alongside Newkirk this past season, was also a senior in 2020 and has yet to announce whether he'll be using his free year of eligibility next year.

Not in means of production. I just liked him as a player. Also these transfers would be easier to swallow if we had a better class coming in. Hoping for Harsin to start hitting the portal.

All these transfers, IMO, is evidence "exhibit A" that Gus ran a soft program.

Harsin comes in, pulls a Pat Dye, and already the chaff is being separated from the wheat.

Never heard of such a thing in my football life with all these defections before even giving Spring Ball a try.

I'll refrain from saying anything about the transfers but I hope the fans & PTB are understanding of this for the next couple years, at least, and fully support CBH & the young men who have the guts to tough it out.  Frankly, this is what it means to have a solid foundation for the future.

This team could be reminiscent of Dye's '81 team.

War Eagle!

I mean I know he was a starter but he wasn’t very good. I wish him nothing but the best, But it seems like he would get better coaching now at AU than he did the last three years.

Not going to get too upset with the transfer of most any player off that defensive line. Was watching some old videos of some of Dyes teams in the late eighties, and Ron Stallworth made 14 tackles in a single game. Not sure we had a defensive lineman make that many in an entire season.
